Abstract

This Illustrated Book as a Means of Preserving Balinese Culture was designed after seeing traditions and culture that are slowly being abandoned by the Balinese Hindu community, especially teenagers who are outside the island of Bali. Data collection through observation and interviews with sources from Hindu religious leaders in Bekasi who know about Banten Prayascita. The visual design process for illustration books using the Design Thinking and Style methods in flat design illustrations is taken for its modern, minimalist nature. The illustrations in the book refer to the original form of Banten, Serati Banten as a reference for supporting illustrations, and the color palette is taken from one of the components in Banten such as flowers, leaves, incense and coconut leaves, supergraphics designed from Banten components such as shrimp paste, thread, and so on. The design of promotional media using the work method uses the AISAS method. By designing this Illustrated Book, it is hoped that the Banten Prayascita tradition will be reintroduced to the young Balinese Hindu community and help preserve and inherit the Banten Prayascita tradition.

Abstract

Abstract

The presence of electricity has become a primary necessity in modern life; however, increasing electricity consumption poses a major challenge for national energy providers such as PT PLN (Persero). The Listrik Pintar (Smart Electricity) program, a prepaid service by PLN, is designed to help customers manage their electricity usage more efficiently. This study aims to design a social media-based educational campaign via Instagram to raise awareness among Generation Z regarding electricity efficiency through the Listrik Pintar program in Medan, one of Indonesia's major cities. Using the ADDIE method (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, Evaluation), the study develops systematic and flexible visual educational media. Data was collected through interviews with PLN employees, Generation Z respondents, and social media strategists, as well as questionnaires, observation, and documentation. The WattWise campaign, employing a flat design visual style and an owl mascot, was implemented through the Instagram account @wattwise.id for one month. Evaluation results show a high validity score of 86% based on the Validator Evaluation Design, covering aspects of graphics, presentation, language, and context. The N-Gain effectiveness test yielded a score of 1.5, indicating high effectiveness in material delivery, with respondents’ understanding increasing from an average pre-test score of 60 to a post-test score of 90. In conclusion, this campaign proved to be both valid and effective in enhancing Generation Z's awareness of electricity efficiency and in supporting the Listrik Pintar program. The novelty of this research lies in the use of Instagram as a platform for electricity efficiency education, a field that has not yet been widely explored, with potential for further development in content and integration of Listrik Pintar program information.

Abstract

The study focuses on the representation of women in Indonesian horror movie posters, particularly those depicting women as victims of violence or supernatural beings. It aims to analyze how these posters reinforce gender stereotypes and patriarchal ideologies that shape societal perceptions of women. The research employs Van Dijk's discourse analysis method, encompassing three levels: text structure, social cognition, and social context. Four Indonesian horror movie posters from 2023 were visually and narratively analyzed. The findings reveal that most posters perpetuate gender bias by depicting women as passive or vulnerable figures, thus reinforcing dominant patriarchal narratives. Notably, the poster for Suzzanna: Malam Jumat Kliwon presents a contrast, portraying the female figure as powerful and threatening. Although this depiction still operates within the supernatural framework, it suggests a shift toward a more active and empowered female presence. Overall, the study highlights the complex dynamics of gender representation in horror media and its implications for broader cultural discourses.

Abstract

This study examines the visual transformation of gender representation on the covers of Enid Blyton's "The Famous Five: Five on a Treasure Island," comparing editions from 1942 and 2017. Using Kress and van Leeuwen's Grammar of Visual Design framework, the research analyzes how visual elements construct gender meaning across different historical contexts. The findings reveal a significant shift in the representation of George (Georgina), from a distinctly masculine-coded character in the 1942 edition to a more feminized portrayal in 2017. Despite being produced in an era of greater gender discourse, the contemporary cover paradoxically presents a less subversive visual model of gender nonconformity. The 1942 illustration depicts George in an active, central position with masculine visual coding that aligns with the character's narrative identity. In contrast, the 2017 cover introduces feminine elements through clothing, posture, and composition that create tension with the character's established rejection of femininity. This transformation reflects complex interactions between changing social norms, commercial considerations, and visual conventions in children's media, demonstrating how design decisions actively participate in constructing cultural understandings of gender.

Abstract

Persons with disabilities, especially those with hearing impairments, often face significant challenges in accessing and enjoying traditional wayang kulit performances. This community service program seeks to address this issue by introducing innovations in the form of specially designed wayang puppets and the integration of speech balloons (balon kata) to make performances more accessible and engaging for deaf audiences. The aim of this initiative is to empower individuals with hearing disabilities through puppetry arts by creating visually intuitive puppets and providing visual dialogue aids that support their understanding of the narrative and character interactions. The method employed involves a structured design facilitation process that includes problem identification, idea formulation, experimentation, selection, implementation, and presentation. The involvement of community partners such as Padepokan Seni Sarotama is a key component of the program's success. The results show that the use of speech balloons in conjunction with puppet design has significantly improved the level of appreciation, comprehension, and engagement of deaf participants during wayang performances. Participants expressed a stronger emotional connection to the performance and reported increased confidence and self-esteem. This program demonstrates that artistic innovation in traditional puppetry can serve as an effective medium for inclusion and empowerment of individuals with special needs. Additionally, the project contributes to the preservation and revitalization of wayang culture among younger generations, including those with disabilities.

Abstract

This study examines how hybrid visual practices in subcultural contexts challenge the binary between art and design. It addresses the theoretical division proposed by Tsion Avital, who posits a strict dichotomy between symbolic art and functional design. Using this framework, the visual discourse of the Indonesian collective Penahitam is critically analyzed. The 9th edition of Penahitam's artzine, Madness, is selected as a case study due to its thematic depth and ideological complexity. The research applies Norman Fairclough’s Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) to integrate textual, visual, and contextual elements, exploring how meaning is constructed through the interplay of image, text, layout, and cultural production. Avital’s symbolic-functional theory serves as a lens to assess how Penahitam negotiates between expressive freedom and visual functionality. Findings indicate that Madness reconfigures the relationship between artistic and design elements into a hybrid visual discourse. The artzine's layout, poetic writing, dark-art illustrations, and socio-political content work cohesively to communicate ideological resistance while remaining accessible. This integration disrupts Avital’s dichotomy, showing how hybridity becomes a strategic tool for expression and subcultural authorship. Furthermore, the production and dissemination of the artzine across 29 Indonesian cities underscore Penahitam’s commitment to collective authorship, independence, and decentralized cultural activism. This study contributes to the discourse on art-design hybridity by offering a concrete analytical model for understanding how independent collectives use visual media to challenge dominant narratives and assert creative autonomy.
