Abstract

Fulfilling the need for agricultural information was the main focus of information and communication technology applications in agriculture. Smartphones were not only used to find agricultural information but also served as an extension media. This study aimed to identify the level of smartphone utilization as a media of agricultural information by rice farmers in Margomulyo Village and to formulate strategies for extension methods and media based on their perceptions. The research was conducted from January to February 2025 in Margomulyo Village using a survey method. Sampling was done purposively with 73 respondents for objective 1, including 8 farmer group leaders and 1 extension worker as key informants for objective 2. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The analytical methods used were descriptive analysis and swot analysis. The results showed that smartphone utilization as a media of agricultural information was high, based on perceived usefulness (technological effectiveness, technological advantages, and the relevance of technology to achieve goals) and perceived ease of use (ease of learning, ease of use, and infrastructure availability). The extension methods and media for Margomulyo Village rice farmers were in quadrant I, suggesting an aggressive (S-O) strategy. S-O strategies that could be used included strengthening digital extension based on farmer groups, optimizing smartphones as extension media and information access, collaborating with extension workers and online farmer communities, and integrating technology in face-to-face extension.

Abstract

In general, the characteristics of tofu produced in Sumedang come from two types of soybeans, imported soybeans and local soybeans. This study attempts to examine the characteristics of tofu including texture, color, taste, aroma, water content, and durability. This study is descriptive quantitative, where data collection is carried out through cross-tabulation to see the relationship between soybean types and tofu product characteristics. Through direct observation in the field and conducting interviews with a number of Sumedang tofu producers. The results of the study found that the composition of local soybeans and imported soybeans in producing Sumedang tofu has quite significant differences in forming the characteristics of the tofu produced. Tofu using local soybeans has a soybean flavor and aroma, while tofu processed from imported soybeans has a smoother color and texture. These results can of course provide a real picture for Sumedang tofu producers about choosing the type of soybean according to consumer desires and preferences. Local soybeans can be recommended and educated to tofu producers so that local soybeans are maintained and sustainable.

Abstract

Human resources in the agricultural sector are faced with the problem of an aging workforce not accompanied by workforce regeneration. This problem is caused by the low interest of the younger generation to participate in the agricultural sector where various factors influence this interest. This study aims to provide an overview of the factors that influence the interest of the younger generation in the agricultural sector. This study was conducted using a descriptive approach with secondary data obtained from research articles related to the interest of the younger generation in the agricultural sector, as well as other supporting data. The data analysis used in this study is interactive analysis and bibliometric analysis. The results of the study show that the interest of the younger generation (<25 years) in the agricultural sector has been very low for the past few years (<10%), with the largest level of education of the workforce in the agricultural sector dominated by low education (>60%). The results of the bibliometric analysis of 34 articles related to the interest of the younger generation in the agricultural sector showed 11 influencing factors. The eleven factors are grouped into 2 clusters, namely cluster A consisting of 7 factors (age, education, experience, gender, income, land area, and parents), while cluster B consists of 4 factors (external factors, motivation, perception, and technology). There are three very dominant factors that influence the interest of the younger generation in the agricultural sector, namely income, education, and age.

Abstract

Land use change in tea plantation areas in West Java is a complex phenomenon influenced by the interaction of various social, economic, and environmental factors. This study aims to identify the driving factors behind tea land conversion through a systematic literature review of reputable scientific publications from 2020 to 2024. Thematic analysis shows that generational shifts among farmers, weak local institutions, short-term economic incentives, market price pressures, ecological degradation due to monoculture practices, and climate change are the dominant drivers of land conversion. The interaction of social, economic, and environmental factors creates reinforcing feedback loops that accelerate land use change. This phenomenon results in trade-offs between short-term income gains and the loss of strategic ecosystem services. The findings highlight the importance of evidence-based spatial planning policies, land conservation incentives, local community empowerment, and the integration of spatial mapping and ecosystem valuation. This study recommends future research to develop predictive models of land conversion using spatial technology and quantitative ecosystem valuation methods to support sustainable tea plantation land protection policies in West Java.

Abstract

Cinnamon is one of Indonesia's leading spice commodities with great international trade potential. Indonesia is known as one of the world's major producers and exporters of cinnamon, with export destination countries such as the United States, France, the Netherlands, Thailand and Malaysia. However, the competitiveness of Indonesian cinnamon exports experiences different dynamics in each destination country. This study aims to analyze the competitiveness of Indonesian cinnamon exports to the five destination countries using two approaches, namely the Index of Trade Specialization (ISP) and Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA). The data used is secondary data taken from TradeMap and UN Comtraded in the form of export and import values of Indonesian and world cinnamon from 2015-2024 and analyzed quantitatively. The results showed that Indonesia's ISP value was consistently in the positive range (0-1), which indicated that Indonesia was an exporter of cinnamon even though it had the lowest index in 2021. Meanwhile, the RCA value against five export destination countries shows that Indonesian cinnamon has a comparative advantage, with the highest RCA value in France at an average of 233,73 and the lowest in Malaysia at an average of 11,62. These findings indicate that Indonesia's cinnamon competitiveness position is still strong but requires a market differentiation and diversification strategy to reduce dependence on specific countries and be able to face increasingly complex global competition.
