Abstract

Indonesia is one of the best quality cashew nut producers and exporters with a 1.2% share in the global market. This is very far from being compared to Vietnam as the world's main exporter of cashew nut controlling 34.07% of the global export market. This study aims to determine the competitive and comparative advantages of cashew nuts from Indonesia and Vietnam in the international market at 2009-2018. The various differences between the two countries make the products produced and distributed vary in quality and quantity. Competitive advantage is analyzed using Porter's diamond theory which consists of four factors to see the competitive advantage of an industry/country. Meanwhile, to determine the comparative advantage of cashew nut trading activities, the Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) and Trade Specialization Index (ISP) were calculated. Based on the results of the analysis, it can be seen that Indonesia has an advantage in producing cashew nuts, but has not been able to process it optimally, such as Vietnam which applies special technology and standards in producing cashew nuts. The RCA calculation shows that Vietnam's cashew nut exports have much greater competitiveness than Indonesia, and the ISP calculation results show that both exporters are still importing to maintain the economy and ensure the availability of industrial raw materials in the global market. Trade-related policies need to be considered in order to increase export profits and benefit domestic business actors

Abstract

Management of national borders has become one of the main agenda of the government. The government has the priority to develop Indonesia from the periphery by strengthening regions and villages within the framework of a unitary state. The threat of national sovereignty and security disturbances at the border becomes a crucial national issue. The purpose of this study is to design the development of potential areas owned by Natuna Regency. Based on the results of the location quotient analysis, the base sectors in Natuna Regency are the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries sectors. The results of the Shift-Share analysis, there are five leading sectors, namely 1) Mining and Quarrying; 2) Processing Industry; 3) Construction; 4) Wholesale and Retail Trade, and Repair of Cars and Motorcycles; and 5) Government Administration, Defense and Mandatory Social Security. Based on the results of the Inverse Distance Weighted analysis, the pattern of regional development focuses on four growth poles locations, namely Ranai, Kelarik, Strait, Midai, and Serasan. As a district with a special military zone, the development of the Natuna Regency requires synchronization between the potential of the region's natural resources, the regional government, the national army, the private sector and the community.

Cocoa has huge potential in the downstream sector, reflected by the many variations of cocoa-based products with high economic value. Government of Indonesia declared cocoa powder and cocoa butter as the main product of downstream cocoa industry. Development of the cocoa industry downstream sector is indicated in the shift of cocoa based-products exported to various countries around the world, from raw cocoa seeds to cocoa powder and cocoa butter. Increase in Indonesian import of cocoa beans shows that there is an increase in the industry’s consumption of raw cocoa beans. The purpose of this research is to analyze the trend and dynamics of Indonesia’s cocoa bean production, cocoa bean export, downstream sector’s production, and downstream sector’s cocoa bean consumption, and to identify factors that affect downstream cocoa industry’s demand of cocoa beans using Ordinary Least Squares regression analysis. The result of this research shows that Indonesia’s cocoa bean export and production is trending downward, while downstream production and consumption shows a positive developing trend. Factors that affect the cocoa downstream industry’s demand are prices of cocoa bean, cocoa butter, cocoa powder, and the amount of cocoa powder produced by the industry. Keywords: Cocoa Powder, Cocoa Butter, Trend, Dowsntream Industry’s Demand, Ordinary Least Square

Abstract

This research is motivated by the inequality of availability with the needs of Cipangarangan irrigation water. Farmers using water are proposing to revitalize the irrigation. Based on this background, the objectives of this study are a) to estimate the value of economic benefits from irrigation revitalization; b) analysis of ability (ATP) and willingness to pay WTP) of farmers for irrigation services, and c) knowing ATP and WTP of irrigation services with farmer characteristics. The method used is a mixed method research with primary and secondary data. Respondents were determined using proportional random sampling. The conclusions of the research results: a) Cipangarangan irrigation revitalization is predicted to increase the economic benefit value of Rp. 10,934,091,000 / year, originating from an increase in the net value of rice farming income of Rp. 7,707,231,000 and labor absorption equivalent to Rp. 3,226,860,000 / year. b) The average ATP for irrigation services is relatively smaller (Rp. 38,749) when compared to the average WTP (Rp. 71,195). This condition shows that the range of farmers' ability to pay for irrigation services is smaller than their willingness to pay (ATP <WTP). Conditions like this illustrate the courage of farmers to pay for irrigation services beyond their reach, the utility of irrigation services is relatively higher than the income of service users. This condition is called Captive riders.
