Abstract

Occupational safety and health play a crucial role in controlling industrial operational risks, particularly in sugar mill evaporation stations. The high-temperature and high-pressure evaporation process of sugarcane juice has the potential to cause various hazards, including leaking pipes, high temperatures around the evaporation station, noise, and steam emissions. Identification of potential hazards and analysis of occupational accident risks are required using the Hazard and Operability Study (Hazop) method. This study uses a quantitative descriptive approach, including field observations, in-depth interviews, and supporting documentation. Likelihood and severity matrices are used in the risk assessment to determine the risk level of various hazards. The results of the study indicate nine potential hazards, with an extreme risk of 11%, a high risk of 50%, and a moderate risk of 22%. This extreme risk potential hazard occurs due to leaks in high-pressure pipes during the steam flow to the evaporator. Risk management can be implemented through risk mitigation, including the installation of safety valves, routine inspections, ventilation and drainage systems, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and SMK3 training. An effective hazard control strategy can be achieved by systematically implementing Hazop analysis to create a safe and accident-free work environment.

Abstract

PT XYZ, located in Central Lampung Regency, is a company engaged in tapioca production. However, there are still instances of nonconforming products, particularly in RF (Reject Retained Mesh). The causes of RF include the decrease in starch content in raw materials, human error due to less careful workers, and environmental factors. This study aims to analyze the quality control of tapioca products at PT XYZ using the Statistical Quality Control (SQC) method. This method is applied to determine the extent to which product quality is controlled and to identify the factors causing product nonconformities. The analytical tools used include check sheets, histograms, control charts, Pareto diagrams, and fishbone diagrams. The data analyzed were obtained from observations, interviews, as well as production and defect data during February 2024. The results showed that the production process has not yet been fully within control limits, and the highest number of nonconformities occurred in the RF category. The main factors contributing to nonconformities include human, machine, method, raw materials, and environment. This study suggests that the company should improve operator training, machine maintenance, SOP supervision, raw material selection, and proper production scheduling. The implementation of effective quality control is expected to reduce the number of nonconforming products and improve overall product quality.

Abstract

Banyumas Regency is the largest producer of cardamom in Central Java. One of the production centres is in Cilongok District, but in 2024 there was a decline due to drought and low selling prices, which reduced farmers' motivation to cultivate cardamom. This condition necessitates the adaptation of agricultural practices to manage the risks arising from climate change and other challenges, ensuring the sustainability of farming activities amid environmental and economic pressures. This study aimed to analyze the resilience level of cardamom farmers in response to climate change and declining market prices. A cross-sectional survey design was employed, and the sampling technique used was cluster sampling, involving 50 cardamom farmers in Cilongok District. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Livelihood Vulnerability Index (LVI) approach. Based on the analysis, the LVI score was (0.55), which indicates a moderate to high level of vulnerability. The exposure index was (0.51), reflecting considerable exposure to climatic variability. The sensitivity index was (0.44), indicating moderate impacts on health, food security, and water availability, with fluctuating cardamom prices worsening the condition. The adaptive capacity index scored the highest at (0.68), suggesting a low adaptive capacity among farmers, mainly due to advanced age, low education levels, and limited institutional support. These findings underscore the urgency of implementing adaptation strategies such as technical training, strengthening of farmer organizations, expanding market access, and policy interventions to reduce vulnerability and enhance the resilience of cardamom farmers to climate variability and price instability.

Abstract

Business performance reflects the extent to which a company achieves its objectives. However, in practice, many business actors face various challenges that hinder performance achievement, including Bara Hidroponik. The purpose of this study is to analyze the role of financial, social, and human capital in supporting the performance of hydroponic businesses both in financial and non-financial aspects. This study employs a qualitative approach using a case study design at Bara Hidroponik, with data collected through in depth interviews involving the business owner, operational staff, partners, and consumers, as well as direct observation of operational activities. The findings show that financial capital plays a greater role in financial performance due to the capital structure being dominated by personal funds, which limits expansion. Social capital contributes more to non-financial performance as a wide business network provides access to information and collaboration opportunities. Human capital also plays a more significant role in financial and non-financial performance due to high employee competence, which drives responsive service. Future research is recommended to use a quantitative approach in order to gain a more thorough and comprehensive understanding.

Abstract

Apples are a well known and growing horticultural commodity in Batu City, but in recent years many apple farmers have converted their agricultural land into orange plantations. This change occurred due to several factors such as unstable apple price fluctuations, high production costs, and increasing outbreaks of apple pests and diseases which are challenges for farmers to overcome due to climate change. But on the contrary, orange plants are considered more adaptive to environmental conditions and have promosing market opportunities, making them a more rational choice for farmers. Most people in Punten Village use their agricultural land to farm oranges with various varieties. However, even though the production is quite high, optimizing farmers income still faces challenges. Therefore, farmers must study in depth the aspects that affect income in order to maximize their income. The purpose of this study was to identify factors that affect the income of citrus farming in Punten Village, Bumiaji District, Batu City. The population selection was taken by purposive sampling, namely apple farmers who switched to citrus farmers. The population obtained was 240 farmers and 36 farmers were selected randomly (random sampling). Multiple linear regression analysis was used in this study. Land area (X1), labor costs (X2), seed costs (X3), fertilizer costs (X4), pesticide cost (X5) became independent variables, and income (Y) as the dependent variable. The results showed that the variables of land area and seed costs had a significant and unidirectional influence on income. The variable of fertilizer costs had a significant but not unidirectional influence. Meanwhile, farmer income was not affected by the variables of labor costs and pesticide costs.

Abstract

This study analyzes the technical, allocative, and cost efficiency of Eucheuma cottonii seaweed production in Situbondo Regency, East Java, a major Indonesian producer. A census was conducted on 60 farmers in Agel Village and Pathek Beach. Primary data included inputs (seeds, plot area, labor, fuel) and output (dried seaweed production), analyzed using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) with DEAP 2.1, applying Constant Return to Scale (CRS) and Variable Return to Scale (VRS) approaches. The production process involves site preparation to harvesting (40-45 days), yielding 800-1,500 kg of dried seaweed per cycle. Average technical efficiency was 0.713 (CRS) and 0.873 (VRS), indicating that most inefficiencies arise from sub-optimal operational scale. Average allocative efficiency of 0.835 suggests farmers haven't fully optimized input combinations based on market prices. Average cost efficiency was only 0.799, with only 11.67% of farmers being cost-efficient, highlighting significant opportunities for improving operational cost management.Recommendations include enhancing farmers' managerial and technical capacity through training on efficient input use and business scale adjustment. Local government is encouraged to provide intensive assistance for optimizing input allocation and production cost management. Future research should consider a metafrontier DEA approach for cross-group or regional efficiency comparisons, and include variables like education level and experience for a more comprehensive analysis.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the changes in income experienced by farmers in Parindu District due to their oil palm plantations entering the replanting phase. During this phase, oil palm production ceases for approximately 3 to 4 years, resulting in a temporary interruption in income from the commodity. This study used a descriptive method with quantitative and qualitative approaches to answer the predetermined research questions. Data were collected from primary and secondary sources, with a sample size of 68 oil palm farmers. The research findings indicate that before replanting, farmers relied heavily on oil palm plantations as their primary source of income. However, when replanting begins, income from this sector is no longer available, forcing farmers to seek alternative sources of income through non-oil palm on-farm, off-farm, and non-farm activities. Furthermore, farmers need to design appropriate financial strategies to meet their needs and cover household expenses during the replanting period.
