Abstract

This study investigates research trends in Qur’anic memorization within the ‘Ajamic community (non-Arabic speaking Muslims), a practice often criticized as “parrot learning” and therefore marginalized in academic discourse. This research is urgent because it addresses limited scholarly attention given to non-Arabic contexts, despite the persistence of memorization traditions that shape religious identity and communal life. Using a systematic literature review guided by the PRISMA protocol, the search was conducted in the Scopus database and restricted to journal articles published between 2013 and 2023. From 1,830 initial records, successive filtering and eligibility criteria yielded nine relevant studies, which were analyzed qualitatively to answer five research questions concerning memorization methods, inhibiting and supporting factors, impact and role, and motivational aspects. The findings reveal that memorization in ‘Ajamic communities is predominantly performed through oral repetition without immediate comprehension of meaning, yet remains resilient despite structural challenges such as limited facilities, time constraints, and secular critiques. Positive impacts include enhanced learning abilities and significant social roles for memorizers, particularly as imams and proofreaders in communal worship, while motivations are sustained by religious devotion and communal identity. The novelty of this study lies in its systematic mapping of Qur’anic memorization research in non-Arabic contexts, which has not been comprehensively reviewed before. It contributes to the development of tafsir studies by shifting scholarly attention from exegetical and literary receptions toward oral and functional dimensions, thereby challenging reductive assumptions about rote learning and identifying gaps for future inquiry.

Abstract

The 2025 Sumatra floods exposed acute structural vulnerabilities among women, exacerbated by the internalization of medieval patriarchal theological constructs. This study aims to deconstruct the traditional gender hierarchy in Islamic exegesis using Karen Bauer's historical-contextual approach to assess its functional validity during modern disaster crises. Employing Qualitative Content Analysis (QCA) and a critical hermeneutical framework, this research analyzes classical texts regarding qawwamah (QS. An-Nisa: 34) and female testimony (QS. Al-Baqarah: 282) alongside empirical field reports from the PERMAMPU Consortium. The findings reveal the phenomenon of "Structural Qawwamah Dysfunction" in disaster zones; because male authority is legally conditioned upon physical protection (faddala) and economic provision (infaq), this authority becomes functionally void during force majeure scenarios where such capacities collapse. Furthermore, the study debunks the theological stigma of women's intellectual deficiency (nuqsan al-aql) as a contextual-sociological limitation rather than a biological absolute. While these findings are methodologically bound to extreme crises, the study concludes that maintaining rigid gender hierarchies during emergencies contradicts the maqasid principle of hifz al-nafs (preservation of life). It urgently calls for a "Gender-Responsive Disaster Theology" that shifts the paradigm from female subordination to strategic partnership, acknowledging women as autonomous subjects with full religious legitimacy to lead self-rescue initiatives.

Abstract

The masuk bagas tradition, a housewarming ritual practiced by the Mandailing community, has received limited scholarly attention from the perspective of Living Hadith, leaving the relationship between local cultural practices and Prophetic traditions insufficiently explored. This study aims to examine the implementation of the masuk bagas tradition, identify its normative foundation in Hadith, and explain how Prophetic values are internalized within the community’s socio-religious life. Employing a qualitative field research approach, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation in Panyabungan Kota, Mandailing Natal Regency, Indonesia. The novelty of this study lies in integrating the Living Hadith approach with sanad and matn analysis alongside the interpretation of Mandailing cultural symbols within a unified analytical framework. The findings reveal that the masuk bagas tradition is religiously legitimized by an authentic Prophetic tradition concerning prayers for blessings, manifested through collective supplication, congregational prayer, charitable giving, and the strengthening of social bonds. Cultural symbols, including salt, eggs and chicken, white rice, and drinking water, embody philosophical and spiritual values associated with blessings, family harmony, health, and resilience. This study contributes to Hadith scholarship by demonstrating that the harmonious interaction between Mandailing customs and Islamic teachings represents a contextualized form of Living Hadith, serving as a medium of cultural da'wah while reinforcing religious identity, social solidarity, and the continuity of local Islamic traditions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the accuracy of the meaning of words in the Qur'an Translation of Dayak Kanayatn (QT BDK) using interlingual semantic analysis. The main problem focuses on how the lexical equivalents in QT BDK accurately represent the meaning of the Qur'an, both grammatically and contextually. This research is a qualitative study with a literature study that uses QT BDK and native Dayak Kanayatn speakers as primary data sources, especially converts in West Kalimantan. Secondary data includes official translations of the Qur'an, Arabic dictionaries, mu'jam, and books of tafsir. Data analysis was carried out by descriptive-analytical techniques through four stages: object determination, data limitation and selection, lexical decomposition, and comparative analysis with primary and secondary sources. This study examined 37 words in Juz 30 and found three main categories: (1) redaction of words that differ but have the same meaning (musytarak), (2) words that are the same but have different meanings contextually, and (3) grammatical words. The results of the study show that QT BDK is able to apply lexical-contextual semantic principles consistently and contains interlingual principles while maintaining the fidelity of the meaning of the verse and adjusting to the nuances of the Dayak Kanayatn speakers' culture. These findings suggest that BDK QT translations have a strong tendency for accuracy and indicate linguistic-cultural relevance, although some aspects still require further verification to ensure consistency of meaning in various verse contexts

Abstract

Muhammadiyah, a modernist Islamic movement in Indonesia, is often narrowly understood in both academic and public discourse as rejecting art. However, its official decisions actually build a positive theological foundation for art. This study examines how the 27th National Tarjih Congress Decision on Guidance for Islamic Art and Culture employs the Qur'an and ḥadīth to construct a constructive theology of art. Using a library-based qualitative approach with content analysis of the Tarjih document and al-Fārūqī's tawḥīdic aesthetics as a framework, this research finds that the decision constructs such a theology through five pillars: fiṭrah; reinterpretation of ḥadīths via 'illat al-ḥukm; Sufi values through iḥsān; a cultural strategy balancing purification and accommodation; and Al-Mā'ūn's social concern—challenging the narrow view of Muhammadiyah as anti-art. The decision thus formulates a theology of art that not only permits art legally but also positions it as part of Muslims' spiritual and social mission. This research offers a new reading of an official Muhammadiyah document and a theoretical framework for analyzing theology of art in contemporary Islam.

Abstract

Parents play a major role in shaping their children's personalities to be pious. Therefore, parents must also be pious as role models in shaping their children's piety. Through QS. Maryam, the researcher aims to 1) examine the forms of piety exhibited by the parents of Prophet Zakaria, Sayyidah Maryam, and Prophet Ibrahim. 2) examine the relationship between the piety of parents and their children through evidence of piety exhibited by the parents of Prophet Yahya, Isa, and Ishaq. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature study type of research with analysis techniques through the contents of the tafsir books Asy-Sya'rawi, Al-Azhar, and Al-Misbah as the main sources, and books, scientific journals, websites, and other literature as secondary sources. Results: 1) There are forms of piety possessed by the Prophet Zakaria, Sayyidah Maryam, and the Prophet Ibrahim, including: patience in facing trials, obedience to Allah's commands, and honesty in facing every problem. 2) The piety of the parents of Prophet Zakaria, Sayyidah Maryam, and Prophet Ibrahim has a close relationship with the formation of their children's piety, as evidenced by the appointment of Yahya, Isa, and Ishaq as prophets who possessed piety like their parents. QS. Maryam provides clear evidence that the piety of parents has a relationship with the piety of their children.

Abstract

Floods in Aceh Tamiang are understood not only as an ecological phenomenon but also through a religious perspective, which affects the community's social response. This study aims to analyze the construction of the meaning of the Qur'an-based disaster in the social practices of people affected by multiethnic floods. Using a descriptive-analytical qualitative approach with a Living Qur'an perspective, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation of 15 informants of different levels of religiosity and two comparative villages. Data analysis uses a hybrid thematic analysis approach with codebooks, as well as triangulation of sources and methods. The results of the study show three patterns of theological interpretation of floods as tests, reprimands, and fates that are present simultaneously, as well as three inductive categories: non-theological factors, socio-religious resilience, and social-spiritual dysfunction. The theory of speech (Austin/Searle) shows religious speech as a performative act that shapes social reality. This research contributes to the development of the study of the Living Qur'an by expanding the context to ecological-disaster crises based on the Dimensions search protocol (2005-2025), as well as recommending strengthening the capacity of religious leaders in psychosocial assistance based on contextual theology and the integration of religious-ecological approaches in disaster mitigation policies

Abstract

This study examines Ali Mustafa Yaqub’s interpretation of hadith concerning the Prophet’s long hair in response to the phenomenon among certain Muslim communities in Indonesia who grow their hair long on the grounds of claiming the Prophet’s sunnah. This practice is largely rooted in a textual-literal approach to hadith interpretation. The central problem addressed in this study is how Ali Mustafa Yaqub rationalizes these hadith in order to respond critically to such socio-religious practices. Methodologically, this research employs a qualitative approach based on library research, utilizing both historical and sociological perspectives. The primary source analyzed is Ali Mustafa Yaqub’s work, Cara Benar Memahami Hadis (The Proper Method of Understanding Hadith). To analyze the data, this study employs Fazlur Rahman’s Double Movement theory, which emphasizes a twofold interpretive process: returning to the historical context in which a text emerged and subsequently reformulating its meaning within contemporary social realities.  The findings reveal that Ali Mustafa Yaqub selectively engages with hadith that classical compilers classify as descriptions of the Prophet’s physical characteristics rather than as sources of legal injunctions or religious obligations. He further draws upon scholarly opinions asserting that growing long hair does not constitute part of the Prophet’s normative sunnah, while giving less attention to alternative perspectives that regard it as recommended. By applying a contextual method informed by historical and sociological analysis, Ali Mustafa situates these hadith within the cultural milieu of Arab society during the Prophet’s time. Consequently, he argues that the Prophet’s long hair should be understood as a cultural expression and an adaptive personal practice, rather than as a universally binding element of Islamic teaching.

Abstract

An important issue in the study of hermeneutics is the dialectical relationship between the life experiences of figures and the interpretation of religious texts. This research aims to analyze life experiences (autobiography) as an instrument to explore divine messages. Methodologically, this study uses Paul Ricoeur's Triple Mimesis theory, which includes three stages of hermeneutical construction: Mimesis I (prefiguration), which refers to the experience that precedes the narrative. Mimesis II (configuration) is the process of structuring experiences into meaningful stories, and Mimesis III (refiguration) is the process when the narrative interacts with the reader and generates new understandings. The results of the textual analysis show that the hermeneutical construction is clearly confirmed through five forms of Hamka's autobiographical narrative, which include: (1) performative function through the Denver Narrative (QS. al-'Ankabut [29]:45); (2) social criticism through the Narrative of Minangkabau Women (QS. al-Baqarah [2]:228); (3) therapeutic function through Prison Narrative (QS. Hud [11]:11); (4) contextual interpretation through the Ann Arbor Slaughterhouse Narrative (QS. al-Maidah [5]:4); and (5) methodological elaboration through the Narrative of Public Lectures at Andalas University (QS. Ali 'Imran [3]:104). From the narrative conveyed by Hamka, he wants to show that the Qur'an is not just a divine kalam that is only understood explicitly but can be explored more widely through certain experiences and contexts. These findings show a new trend that in contemporary Islamic studies, the subjectivity and living space of an interpreter are recognized as methodological instruments that enrich the depth of meaning of sacred texts.

Abstract

This study offers an analysis of the Divine Name al-Ghafur through its recurrent pairing with other Divine Names in the Qur'anic corpus, examining what theological theme each pairing conveys in its specific verse context and how these themes collectively shape the Qur'anic representation of divine forgiveness. The study is motivated by al-Ghafur's recurrent co-occurrence with other divine names, a pattern previously classified by Norasid and Jais (2022) according to the linguistic relation between paired terms (mutual meaning, similarity, opposition, and word order). This study offers a complementary reading of the same phenomenon, organizing the same collocational data by theological theme rather than by linguistic relation. Employing a qualitative corpus-assisted approach, data were drawn from all 91 occurrences of al-Ghafur identified through a lemma-based search of the Qur'anic Arabic Corpus, of which 89 co-occur with another Divine Name within the same verse. The analysis is conceptually grounded in the collocation principles of Firth and interpreted through Qur'anic exegesis (al-Tabari, al-Razi, Ibn 'Ashur, among others). The results show that al-Ghafur predominantly collocates with al-Rahim, al-Halim, al-Shakur, al-Wadud, al-'Aziz, al-'Afuw, and Dhu al-Rahmah, each pairing corresponding to a distinct contextual theme, among them compassion, postponed punishment, divine appreciation, intimacy, the tension between majesty and clemency, complete effacement of sin, and deferred judgment. Rather than constituting an independent theological concept, the meaning of al-Ghafur is contextually enriched through these recurring lexical associations. The findings demonstrate that collocational analysis provides a productive linguistic framework for understanding how the semantic interpretation of Divine Names is shaped by their immediate textual environment in the Qur'an.
