Abstract

This research investigates the influence of social media on public opinion in Indonesia, with a focus on the 2024 general election. As of January 2023, Indonesia has 167 million active social media users or 60.4% of the total population. This study highlights how platforms such as Twitter can spread hate speech, causing social tension, psychological distress, and even physical violence, especially against minority groups. This rapid spread of misinformation and hate speech threatens the democratic process, impacting voter behaviour and trust in institutions. Using a qualitative case study approach, this research explores user experiences, identifying forms of hate speech such as defamation and incitement. The findings emphasise the need for stricter law enforcement, public education on tolerance, and ethical political campaigns. While social media enhances political engagement, it requires robust measures to prevent abuse and ensure election integrity and social cohesion.

Abstract

HIV/AIDS cases among women make up more than 30 percent of national incidence every year in Indonesia. Women are disproportionately susceptible due to gender inequality. Access to online information can improve awareness and equip women to identify their risks as a basis to seek medical testing or for those living with the virus to access support and treatment. This study aims to understand the online information landscape about HIV/AIDS in relation to women in Indonesia. Using thematic analysis across 149 online articles, we found the following themes: prevalence (39), symptoms (37), vulnerability (31), awareness programs (20), information about antiretroviral drugs (12) and HIV testing (10), which illustrates a comprehensive coverage of key aspects related to HIV/AIDS among women in Indonesia within online discourse. They highlight a significant focus on epidemiological data, symptomatology, and the specific vulnerabilities women face in contracting and managing HIV/AIDS and efforts to educate the public and promote prevention strategies. Future research should explore how these themes interact with each other and how they influence public perception and healthcare-seeking behaviour among women affected by HIV/AIDS in Indonesia.

Abstract

The increasing number of hoaxes circulating on digital platforms in Indonesia is concerning. Following the 2024 Indonesian presidential election, the spread of disinformation, specifically on YouTube, has intensified, posing significant risks to public trust and the electoral process. These hoaxes have the potential to destabilise societal harmony and influence voter perceptions. In response, fact-checker institutions have played a critical role in exposing disinformation. This article explores the mechanisms of assessing accuracy on YouTube during the 2024 election, focusing on how Indonesian fact-checking institutions operate. The research used a qualitative approach, with two data collection techniques– interviews with key stakeholders and field observations of fact-checking processes. This research revealed that fact-checking in Indonesia is falling behind the rapid disinformation production. Combating disinformation requires more than current efforts—it demands a coordinated, resource-intensive approach involving the executive, legislative, judiciary, and civil society's active engagement. Innovative policies, technological advancements, and well-trained human resources are imperative to ensure its effectiveness.

Abstract

Twitter is the main platform for digital campaigns that influence public opinion. Through Twitter, political parties reach a wider audience to disseminate messages effectively. This research analyses narrative content on social media as a medium for political party campaigns delivered via social media. This research examines the campaign content strategy of nationalist party Twitter accounts in Indonesia. The method used is a qualitative method utilising Quality Data Analysis (QDA) with the help of Nvivo 12 Plus software. Three nationalist party Twitter accounts were taken based on their popularity, particularly @Gerindra, @Nasdem, and @PDI_Perjuangan. The @Gerindra account with 68.1 thousand followers highlights aspects of the party's identity and the figure of Prabowo Subianto. In contrast, the @NasDem account focuses more on party identity, national issues, and active participation in political society. The @PDI_Perjuangan account focuses on the spirit of struggle, the candidacy of Ganjar Pranowo, and the construction of the party's identity and history, with high activity, namely 1219 tweets in three months. The results of the analysis of the content of nationalist party Twitter accounts can provide insight into political party communication strategies in digital campaigns in Indonesia.

Abstract

The online news coverage regarding the ongoing Gaza conflict published by Ynetnews extends beyond information dissemination but also includes information frames that align with Israel's noopolitik interests. However, this theme remains under academic research as literature regarding this study remains scarce. This study is also based on the question: how Ynetnews use media framing as an Israeli noopolitik tool to create a negative image of Hamas in the ongoing hostilities between Hamas and Israel. The data in this study was collected by analysing twenty-seven (27) news articles published on Ynetnews website using the keyword ‘Israel-Palestine Conflict’ from 10 December 2023 to 14 January 2024. This study employed the framing analysis method of Zhongdang Pan and Gerald M. Kosicky to uncover and answer the research questions. The study highlights two important findings on Israel’s noopolitik strategy: The first strategy is made through the consistent portrayal of Hamas as a terrorist group as being published by Ynetnews in its online content. Second strategy is by accusing Hamas of playing the victim, which is paradoxically a strategy being projected by Israel.

Abstract

The development of communication technology also refers to the evolution of social media, which provides numerous benefits for its users. Journalists, in carrying out their work, have also undergone a transformation by optimising social media as an initial source of news. This research discusses the transformation of journalists in the digital era, focusing on optimising social media in covering news. The aim of this research is to analyse the use of social media by exploring the challenges and opportunities faced by journalists in utilising these platforms to obtain information, interact with audiences, and disseminate news swiftly and widely while adhering to the Journalistic Code of Ethics. This study is qualitative research employing a case study approach, with data collection methods involving in-depth interviews with journalists from various media outlets in Indonesia. The results of this research indicate, first, that the role of social media has evolved into a crucial element in modern journalistic practice. Social media, initially regarded as a social platform, has now become a primary source of information for journalists when commencing news coverage. The rapid dissemination of information via social media facilitates journalists' access to real-time data, the latest news, and public opinion. The Codes of Ethics serve as a guide to ensure that, despite information originating from social media, the verification process, objectivity, and balance of news remain paramount.

Abstract

This article focused on analysing the strategy and impact of the Pandawara Group in encouraging environmental conservation efforts in Indonesia. The study used a qualitative method to analyse and interpret phenomena within this research, incorporating data on engagement metrics such as likes, views, and followers for each organisation's social media accounts, which were collected using SocialBlade. The findings of this study show that Pandawara Group's activities have successfully increased public awareness of environmental issues. This is reflected in the high engagement and positive sentiment revolving around their environmental content on social media. Moreover, their campaigns have inspired collective action, as evidenced by the growing number of communities participating in their clean-up activities. Despite these achievements, several challenges persist. Ensuring the sustainability of community engagement in environmental protection remains a significant hurdle. Additionally, the government's role in addressing environmental pollution requires further attention. This article offers a new approach to the environmental movement in Indonesia, specifically on optimising digital media to build public awareness and encourage collective action for environmental conservation.

Abstract

Dangdut music performances with their dangdut biduan have become an inseparable part of culture and tradition, specifically in Tangerang City, Banten Province, Indonesia. Dangdut music is often present at various events, ranging from celebrations to big events in the city. However, the public's view of this profession still varies; therefore, symbolic interaction is essential in shaping the image of dangdut biduan (singer) so that it can influence public views. The purpose of this study is to understand the role of symbolic interaction in creating the self-image of dangdut both on stage (front stage) and in their roles as housewives (backstage), as well as to determine the response or perception of the community to the formed self-image by dangdut singers from this symbolic interaction by employing a qualitative descriptive research method through a dramaturgy approach. Data collection methods included in-depth interviews, participant observations, and documentation. A triangulation method was used to ensure the validity of the data. Data analysis techniques included data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusions drawn. The results of this study show that symbolic interaction has a central role in forming a positive image for dangdut singers through attractive physical performance, adaptability to the music played, interaction with the audience, and teamwork. The ability to effectively communicate and adapt to others is crucial in providing a special experience on stage. In addition to being a housewife, symbolic interactions also combine commitment, balance, communication, and family support to create a positive and motivating image. The positive response from colleagues, the social environment, and the audience reflects humility and an attitude that is in harmony with the culture of dangdut biduan, so that it is in harmony with the wider community.

Abstract

Video-on-demand (VOD) services have transformed media consumption globally, with platforms such as Netflix and local providers like Vidio gaining popularity in Indonesia. This study explores the impact of VOD on user behaviours, demographic influences, and health implications in Indonesia, whereby rapid internet expansion drives its adoption. This study aimed to explore how VOD consumption affects daily habits as well as how binge-watching affects health. This research focuses on Indonesia’s unique context with a survey of 422 respondents to analyse VOD habits, and quantitative statistical methods were applied to assess behavioural patterns based on demographic variables. Findings reveal that younger users are the primary consumers of VOD, often engaging with media during work or study hours, resulting in sleep disruption and mental health concerns such as anxiety. Gender differences were notable, with female respondents reporting higher sleep disturbances. Binge-watching behaviour was strongly correlated with health impacts, emphasising the need for better viewing habits. The study concludes that while VOD has enhanced media access and diversity, it has also introduced health risks, particularly for younger audiences. These findings provide valuable insights for VOD platforms and policymakers aiming to promote balanced media consumption. Future research should examine broader demographic trends and long-term effects.

Abstract

The Cembengan ceremony is a Slametan tradition commonly practised by sugar factories before the milling season. This ritual is a prayer for high productivity and excellent safety performance in the workplace during the milling process. Wayang is then played as the highlight of the event with Semar Mbangun Kahyangan as one of the usually performed stories. This study seeks to answer this question: What are the traditional safety concepts staged in the Slametan tradition in the workplace? This study used a content analysis approach to identify, analyse, and categorise the recording data of a wayang performance with the story of Semar Mbangun Kahyangan performed by Ki Dalang Hadi Soegito. This study has found that besides human destiny had been written by God, the meaning of Safety can be pursued through a multidimensional harmony, known as manunggaling kawula-Gusti (vertical harmony), silaturahmi (horisontal harmony), the harmony among five knights of Pandawa as a symbol of the physical harmony of five senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch) and psychological-spiritual harmony. The second finding is that a safety attitude is fostered in line with human development, which is symbolised in Wayang's storyline, first, on the Pathet Enem (infancy to adolescent) safety attitude generated by right-wrong consideration. Second, a safety attitude is an ethical decision within Pathet Sanga (early to middle adulthood). Last, at Pathet Mayura (late adulthood), a safety attitude is a spiritual achievement.
