Abstract

Coral reef ecosystems are vulnerable to damage. This ecosystem is found in tropical and subtropical seas and consists of reefs (calcareous structures) derived from coral animals and other biota. Considering these issues, efforts are needed to find other ways to enhance the exploration of marine resources without causing damage or increasing environmental productivity. This research employs the process of literature review. The results of article searches in the identified databases show that there are various factors that cause damage to the coastal coral reef ecosystem. There are two human (anthropogenic) factors, including the dumping of garbage into the sea, the use of destructive fishing tools, the mining of corals for consumption, and the temperature, brightness, and predators of coral. The damage to the coral reef ecosystem is caused by the human factor (80.98%) compared to the natural factor (58.09%). Addressing this problem, coral reefs in Indonesia have been saved through rehabilitation and conservation using techniques such as spider web transplantation and hybrid shelves and cor, as well as developing CMRIS (Coral Reef Management Information System) and COREMAP (Coral Reef Rehabilitation and Management Programme) as technology systems.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the utilization of Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) in the mangrove ecosystem and analyze their impact on the livelihoods of coastal communities in Teminabuan District, South Sorong Regency. The research was conducted from July to September 2024 using direct interviews with 50 respondents selected through purposive sampling, specifically community members who utilize mangrove resources. Data were collected through inventory to obtain comprehensive information on the types, quantities, and productivity of each NTFP commodity, and then analyzed using qualitative descriptive methods. The results indicate two main categories of NTFP utilization: flora (mangrove leaves, pedada, nipah, coconut, and rattan) and fauna associated with mangroves (honeybees, crabs, clams, ants, catfish, and shrimp). The utilization of NTFPs includes direct consumption, traditional medicine, sales, tourism, and garden creation. Mangroves play an important role as a source of food and livelihood for coastal communities, thus the utilization of NTFPs is carried out sustainably. This study provides baseline data on the potential of mangrove NTFPs in Teminabuan District, supporting sustainable management, community empowerment, forest conservation, and the improvement of coastal community welfare. These findings contribute to local economic development and the conservation of mangrove ecosystems in Southwest Papua.

Abstract

Feed is very important in the development of fish farming because around 70% of fish farming production costs come from providing feed. To support the growth and brightness of the color of koi carp, it is necessary to have nutritional content and β-carotene according to the fish's needs. Feed that meets the nutritional needs of fish can increase the growth and color brightness of koi carp. This research aims to determine the effect of feed doses containing shrimp head meal, carrot flour and red spinach flour on the growth and color brightness of koi carp. This study aims to determine the effect of feed doses containing shrimp head meal, carrot flour and red spinach flour on the growth and brightness level of koi goldfish. This research was carried out from November to December 2022 at the Tatelu Freshwater Aquaculture Fisheries Center (BPBAT). The method used was an experimental method with a completely randomized design (CRD) consisting of 4 treatments and 3 replications. Treatment A = (control giving 5% feed dose without containing shrimp head meal, carrot flour and red spinach flour) treatments B, C, and D (feeding containing shrimp head meal, carrot flour and red spinach flour dose 5%, 10 % and 15%). In order to find out the results of the influence of feeding containing shrimp head waste flour, carrot flour and red spinach flour, the data obtained includes the results of calculating the level of color brightness and growth in koi fish calculated using analysis of variance (ANOVA)Based on the results of the study, absolute length growth in treatment D with a dose of 15% had a very significant effect with a value of 1.56 cm, while for the brightness of the color in treatment C, with a dose of 10%, it had a very significant effect with an average value of 10.69, while the growth weight and survival of koi goldfish were not significantly different.

Abstract

Sandfish (Holothuria scabra) are one of the economically important marine animals found in the coastal of the Kei Islands (Tual City and Southeast Maluku Regency). The large exploitation pressure caused the sandfish population in the Kei Islands to decline drastically. This problem can be overcome by farming activities (greeding, nursery and grow-out). Nursery is an important segment in the farming series because through nursery the seeds are prepared to a size that good for rearing in grow-out containers or restocking into nature. This research aims to see the effect of giving Sargasum sp and Ulva sp extracts on the growth and survival of sandfish juveniles. This research doing from August – September 2022 at the Tual Teripang Center, Ohoitel village, Tual City. Juvenile sandfish used as research objects size 3 – 6 mm and stocking density is 40 individu per container. The feed used as treatment was Ulva sp extract 50 g/container (treatment A) and Sargasum sp extract 50 g/container (treatment B). Feeding is done every day and water changes are 70-100% per day. The calculation of growth and survival rate is the variable that observed in this study. The average absolute growth in body length in treatment A was 0.69 mm and in treatment B was 1.72 mm. Through the T test on growth, it was obtained that Pvalue (0.0006) < α (0.05) which means that the two treatments had different effects on juvenile growth. For survival, the average percentage for Treatment A was 40% and Treatment B was 62.5%. Through the T test on survival, it was obtained that Pvalue (0.0048) < α (0.05) which means that the two treatments had different effects on the survival of juvenile sea cucumbers. It was concluded that treatment B was better for the growth of juvenile sandfish than treatment A.

Abstract

Horseshoe crab is a marine animal that is often found in Madura waters. Horseshoe crab is Indonesia's marine biodiversity that has not been widely exploited. This aquatic animal is also called a living fossil, which means it has been alive since ancient times. Information regarding the genetic and phylogenetic structure of Horseshoe crab in the Madura area is still rarely known. Therefore, it is necessary to study to reveal the type of Horseshoe crab using the DNA barcoding method and molecular phylogeny. This research uses COI as a molecular marker, using the PCR method. With DNA barcoding, it only requires very few/small specimens but is able to document the diversity of taxonomic groups that are not yet known or come from areas that have never been identified, and is able to reveal new variations/new diversity in species that were previously classified as only one species. The results showed that the Tachypleus samples were 100% close to Tachypleus gigas. The phylogenetic results of samples from the island of Madura are in the same group as Tachypleus gigas from other locations.

Abstract

Squid is one of the leading export commodities whose potential availability is monitored by the government. This research aims to evaluate the status of squid utilization as a consideration for the sustainability of squid-based smoke processing businesses in Prigi Regency. The analysis used in this research is Gordon-Scheafer bioeconomics. The fishing gear used to catch squid includes 1-boat ring seine, 2-boat ring seine, gill net, paying, trolling line and hand line. The average production of squid commodities from 2014-2022 is 26,396 kg, with a standard effort of 340 yearly trips. Prigi PPN squid fishing activities are economic and biological overfishing because the real average fishing effort exceeds the sum of MEY and MSY efforts. The level of squid utilization tends to approach over-exploited and exceeds 17.5% of the allowable catch. This condition can affect the fulfilment of production needs for processed squid smoke.

Abstract

Koi fish, a popular freshwater ornamental fish with high economic value, is known for its attractive shape and color. Intensive cultivation of koi (Cyprinus rubrofuscus) using sistems such as Recirculatory Aquaculture Sistem (RAS) and aquaponics presents profitable business opportunities. However, land conversion for development reduces cultivation areas and water quality, necessitating innovations to ensure the sustainability of fish farming. The RAS sistem utilizes filters to recycle water, while aquaponics uses plant media for filtration. Research conducted from February 7 to March 19, 2024, at UD. Pojok Koi Farm, Gresik, East Java, aimed to compare koi growth under these two cultivation sistems. The results indicate that neither the aquaponics sistem nor RAS significantly affected koi length and survival, but both had an impact on weight gain and feed conversion ratio (FCR). Water quality, including pH, temperature, and DO, plays a crucial role in koi growth. pH and temperature remained within suitable ranges, while DO levels met the minimal requirements for koi in both sistems. Good water quality and effective filtration sistems support the growth and health of koi fish.
