Abstract

Understanding the concept is one of the essential needs teachers pursue in improving student competence in the current era of openness. One of the learning models that can sharpen and encourage students' understanding of physics concepts is problem-based learning (PBL). Heretofore, research related to understanding concepts with PBL in understanding the Doppler effect material in depth is still minimal. Therefore, through this research, an exploration was carried out to determine the extent to which students' understanding of the Doppler effect material was carried out. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of PBL on students' conceptual understanding. This type of research is experimental with a total of 58 students. Both the experimental and the control classes were in class 11 of the science major of Christian Senior High School Ambon. The research procedure was a conceptual understanding test, which was carried out during the research process. The data analysis used was an independent sample T-test. The results showed that the average value of PBL class students' learning outcomes related to students' conceptual understanding was higher than conventional classes. It shows that PBL improve students' conceptual understanding of the Doppler effect material.

Abstract

The use of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in Physics Learning has been widely used, but only as a learning model that is used to determine its effects on students. Whereas PjBL can also be used as a model to produce new information and experimental tools with the right method. This research is a laboratory experimental study that aims to produce an experimental device to determine the refractive index of various materials using refractive and perfect reflection methods. To complete this research, the team followed the steps of PjBL which consisted of 7 stages, namely Challenging Problems or Questions, Sustained Inquiry, Authenticity, Student Voice and Choice, Reflection, Critique and Revision, and Public Product. By following the PJBL stages, the team succeeded in producing an experimental device with good results. The results show that the experimental device produced works well and is able to determine the refractive index of the material with a fairly accurate value where the error value is below 1%. From this process also, the team acquired more skills, namely critical thinking, problem-solving, communication and collaboration.

Abstract

Online learning in isolated areas is very difficult to implement, on the other hand direct learning cannot be carried out during this pandemic period. This study aims to see whether video-assisted learning (offline) is effective to be applied as an alternative in online learning. This quantitative study used a post-test only control-group design. The experimental class was treated with video-assisted teaching on the temperature and heat material. The control class was given learning treatment using the online learning method by giving assignments and online learning assisted by the whatsapp application. The population of this research is the seventh grade students of SMP Negeri 03 Entikong. The research sample amounted to 78 people were selected using a systematic sampling technique. The instrument in this study consisted of written test and video teaching on temperature and heat material. The written test given to students is in the form of an essay test with 4 questions related to heat material. The written test indicator consists of analyzing the temperature comparison of the thermometer; analyzing the effect of temperature on the long expansion of objects; using the specific heat data of material to determine the amount of heat required to raise the objects’ temperature; calculating the amount of heat to change the state of objects. The results of this study indicate that there is a difference between the average student physics’ learning outcomes in teaching video-assisted learning class and whatsapp-assisted online class.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a Multiple Skills Laboratory Activities Model (MSLAM), which can train and develop students' 4C skills (critical, creative, communication, and collaboration) through laboratory activities. This study used the Research and Development method with the ADDIE (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) model. There are 70 students ─ 18 males and 52 females ─ who participate in this research. The research instrument consisted of expert validation sheets, tests, and performance assessments. The Likert and Guttmann scale analyzed the MSLAM validation sheet. The test results were analyzed using a normalized gain score <g>, and the performance assessment was analyzed using a Likert scale. The results of expert validation show that MSLAM is very feasible to be implemented in laboratory activities. The test results showed an increase in students' critical and creative thinking skills in the MSLAM group were greater than in the Higher Order Thinking Laboratory/HOT Lab group. Students' communication and collaborative skills in the MSLAM group were greater than in the HOT Lab group. These results indicate that the MSLAM model developed can improve students' 4C skills through laboratory activities. Thus, the MSLAM can be applied in physics learning to develop students' various higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

Coal mining will form acid mine drainage in former open pit mines. If acid mine water enters community waters, it will cause disturbance to biota and decrease water quality. Sawahlunto is one of the cities in Indonesia that has a coal mining area located near a settlement. With the acid mine drainage, if it rains, the water will flow into the river where the water is used by the community. Part of the coal is used as fuel for the Sijantang Sawahlunto PLTU. The fuel also produces waste in the form of combustion ash known as fly ash and bottom ash (FABA). This study uses FABA to neutralize acid mine water to meet the community's irrigation water needs. This research will determine the appropriate mass of FABA in neutralizing acid mine drainage. Acid mine water comes from the former mining pit of PT. High Guguak Coal with a pH of 2.88. Then the acid sample is brought to the laboratory to be mixed with FABA and lime. 4.98 grams of FABA with 0.02 lime can neutralize 200 mL of acid mine drainage and change the pH from 2.88 to 7.91. FABA can be included in the settling pond to neutralize acidic water before it is released into community waters.

Abstract

Physics learning is learning that requires students to understand the concepts. In fact, most students still do not understand the concepts they have learned, especially the concepts in Newton's Law so that it can cause misconceptions. Students' misconceptions on Newton's Law can be identified using diagnostic tests. However, this diagnostic test is not yet available in schools. The purpose of this study was to produce a valid and reliable Four-Tier Multiple Choice Test instrument on Newton’s Laws material. The type of research carried out is design research with the Plomp development model. This research is limited to two steps, which are Preliminary Research and Prototype Phase. The data collection instruments in this study were interview guides, student concept tests, self-evaluation sheets and product validation sheets. The data analysis technique used is descriptive analysis for the interview guides, coding techniques for the concept test, Aiken’s formula for validation sheet and for the reliability using KR-20 formula. The results of preliminary research shows that teachers use more conventional learning which has the potential to cause misconceptions. Meanwhile, more than 50% of students experience misconceptions. Furthermore, the results of the instrument validation are: first, the validity aspect of the instrument scores between 0.56 to 0.79 which are in the valid category. Second, the reliability scores of the instrument is 0,90 which is in the very high category. It means Four-Tier Multiple Choice Test instrument on Newton’s Laws material can be used.
