Abstract

The objective of this research is to evaluate whether the activities of two nationally-recognized English textbooks satisfy the GBA (Genre-Based Approach) and the three aspects of national curriculum, involving knowledge, skills, and attitudes. The data of the research rely on the learning-teaching activities in the two English textbooks used in Class VII, VIII, and IX of Junior High Schools in Indonesia. The sources of data are taken purposively to find five different genres involving description, recount, procedure, narrative, and report. The bases of the evaluation of the book activities are derived from GBA teaching and learning processes which include the completeness, appropriate sequence, and the ampleness of the activities in satisfying the integrations of the three aspects of the national curriculum, GBA activities and language levels activities as realized in general activities. The findings indicate that the activities in the two books can be classified into two patterns. Pattern 1, in general, satisfies the completeness of the GBA and three language levels activities. However, they lack of the appropriate sequences and ampleness of the GBA and language levels and therefore, they miss the integration of the three aspects of curriculum. Pattern 2 do not satisfy all of the three bases of evaluation including completeness, appropriate sequence and ampleness of GBA and language levels activities. Therefore, the activities of the two textbooks need to be redesigned according to the integration of the three aspects of the national curriculum and the completeness, appropriate sequence, and ampleness of the GBA and language levels activities.

Abstract

Background: The usage of remote learning system creates challenges in many universities, especially during COVID-19 pandemic. The utilization of remote learning system has supported many lecturers in teaching and learning process. However, making an appropriate learning assessment is still an issue. This study was aimed to investigate the types of assessment techniques, learning platforms utilized by lecturers in assessing the students’ performance, and challenges in assessing students online. Methodology: This is a mixed method study. The participants were 20 lecturers from any disciplines working in one state university in East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The data were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. Findings: It was revealed that six assessment techniques were revealed including video projects, group presentations, essay writing, online tests, summarizing, and giving comments on online discussions. Moreover, seven learning platforms were found to be used by the participants with Zoom as the highest choice with 86.2%. Last, three main challenges of assessing students online were uncovered through interview data which include lack of face-to-face interactions, lack of supporting teaching and learning facilities, and lack of students’ integrity and honesty. Conclusion: Various techniques and platforms for students’ assessments were used by lecturers. However, a number of challenges were also found to show that not only do online assessments provide positive but also negative contribution towards students’ performance in assessments.

Abstract

Background: Children from low socioeconomic backgrounds in Indonesia have been facing challenges in terms of their literacy and language development. One of the possible reasons is that they are not used to receiving meaningful early reading interventions such as shared reading during their pre-school attendance. This phenomenon has brought to light the urgency of having an early intervention, which can accommodate the very diverse linguistic and cultural context of Indonesia- a multilingual and multicultural country. Methodology: This study employed an explanatory sequential mixed-method research design. The first phase was conducted in a quantitative one-group pre-experiment with pre-and post-test design. The second phase of this research was carried out in a qualitative case study through classroom observation and informal interviews with the teacher and the children. Findings: The findings of MLU calculation showed that for the pre-test, the mean score was 2.35, the median was 2.20 and the standard deviation was 0.53. Meanwhile, for the post-test, the mean score was 3.72, the median was 3.18 and the standard deviation was 1.38. The qualitative phase explored two main aspects, namely the implementation of dialogic reading activity by the teacher and the teacher as well as children’s opinions regarding the dialogic reading activity. Conclusion: This current study has offered an insight that dialogic reading activity could be well implemented by the teacher in a typical Indonesian pre-school setting. The dialogic reading activity was also found to contribute significantly to the development of children’s expressive language ability. Originality: The findings of this study have indicated dialogic reading potentials in terms of promoting children’s language development and just as importantly, sparking children’s joy of reading since their early years of formal education. Therefore, it is suggested that early childhood educators and parents work hand in hand to incorporate dialogic reading activity into their daily literacy practices at schools as well as at home.

Abstract

Background: Recent developments in reading theory emphasize the significance of an interactive approach to reading comprehension in EFL contexts. This study investigates the role of teacher questioning strategies in promoting effective reading comprehension in EFL classrooms. Methodology: This qualitative classroom research studied teacher questioning and students' responses in reading comprehension classes using non-participant observation and interviews to assess the effectiveness of EFL teacher questioning. Findings: EFL teachers in reading classes used closed and open forms of display and referential questions. They employed questioning strategies such as translation, repetition, and pausing. Modifications included probing and rephrasing to improve students' engagement and comprehension. Conclusion: In conclusion, the study found that EFL teachers in reading comprehension courses used a range of effective questioning techniques, including translation, repetition, pausing, probing, and rephrasing, to enhance student engagement and comprehension. However, the use of complex or punishing questions can impede effective questioning. Originality: The novelty of this study lies in investigating the types of questions and strategies employed by EFL teachers in reading comprehension courses. Additionally, the study provides insight into the relationships among the different types of questions and strategies, and their effects on student engagement and comprehension.

Abstract

Background: In today's globalized world, neo-colonialism exerts significant influence, particularly in political and economic spheres. This influence extends to English Language Teaching (ELT) in Indonesia, where the hegemony of a specific language test system has resulted in its overuse for multiple purposes. Methodology: This research employs a quantitative approach to design the Test of Academic English Proficiency (TAEP) for Indonesian non-native speakers, focusing on academic, business, and general settings. The four-step process includes participant selection, data collection, expert judgment, and test try-outs. Findings: The study results indicate that TAEP items are acceptable, with a high validity of .98 and reliability of .93. Four poor items require revision, while others effectively distinguish between good and poor test-takers. TAEP's content is balanced and relevant for assessing proficiency in academic, business, and general English. Conclusion: TAEP, meeting language test criteria and legally certified, has been utilized nationally and internationally, including by Bank of Indonesia, the Financial Service Authority of Indonesia (OJK), and Erasmus Mundus. This contributes to Indonesia's pursuit of independence from modern colonization. Originality: This study innovatively explores the underexamined relationship between neo-colonialism and language testing, addressing issues such as overdependence on specific tests, national spending burdens, and neglect of local linguistic and cultural contexts.

Abstract

Background: The current language policy in Indonesia removed English language programs from the elementary school curricula for fear of constraining children’s first language ability. Many are worried about the impact of the policy. Such policy sparks a debate among scholars and educators. The policy results in worry among those who believe in the importance of learning English, such as parents and English teachers. Methodology: The current study aims to investigate the English student teachers’ belief in the notion of Language Imperialism (LI). Using the descriptive qualitative method, the data were taken from six of the student-teachers interview. Findings: The current research shows that English is not part of imperialism, but rather a form of empowerment and that their future job as an English teacher is not to promote the language but as a way to help their future students in facing a more globalized and competitive world. Conclusion: In the context of English language learning student-teachers see their profession as a platform for empowerment for future generations. They believe that teaching English as a way to promote local cultures and languages to the outside world by using local content in the classroom, contrary to the popular belief that English dominates local languages Originality: The concept of language imperialism recognizes as colonialism. Little attention is given to the perception of student-teachers as a future generation in criticizing the government policy for better feedback. The positive views found, hopefully, will give fruitful decision for the government.

Abstract

Background: The increase in Covid-19 patients in Kediri City has had a significant influence on a variety of areas, including health services in the hospitals. This paper explicates an overview of how Covid-19 patients complain about health services in hospitals. Methodology: The present study employed qualitative design using sociopragmatics approach. Data was collected from 31 informants of different genders. The data analysis used Trosborg’s theory. Findings: The results show that in Situation 1 (Medical Ward), both female and male patients have similarities in the use of speech act of complaining using annoyance by 37% of female and 36% of male patients, while in Situation 2 (Healthcare Services), there are differences in the use of the complaining strategy across gender. Women tend to use the ill consequences strategy (29%), while men used the annoyance strategy (34%). While the pattern of similarity in the speech act of complaining used across genders shows that the hint strategy (1%) was used by both genders as seen in Situation 2. Conclusion: To sum up, the difference in gender is not always a determining factor or benchmark in determining something including language use, it all depends on the individual's character in responding to something. Women can no longer be considered "super polite" compared to men, because in certain conditions women can be rougher than men, and vice versa. Originality: If the complaints of Covid-19 survivors about health services in hospitals are not revealed, then the public will never know the real conditions in the field. Without intending to diminish the importance of other determining factors and reduce the performance of healthcare workers as a result of their efforts in service, the less optimal service provided by healthcare workers to patients occurs because there is an imbalance between the needs of the survivors and the capacity of healthcare workers to meet those needs.

Abstract

Background: In the past ten years or so, the publication of research journal articles has been increasing and growing. The development is even more significant when the Higher Education in Circular Letter No.152 / E / T / 2012 requires article writing for students of all levels as one of the graduation requirements. The publication of articles, especially in English-language journals, is a challenge for Indonesian authors to be able to produce scientific papers that not only meet scientific rules but also linguistic rules in English. Methodology: This study aims to see the function of rhetorical moves in English journal articles published in SINTA-accredited journals. The part of the article to be studied is focused on the Introduction which has the main role of providing general information about the research background. The rhetoric function of this article will show a series of texts that have a specific function in the Introduction. The sample of this study was taken from articles in the SINTA-accredited journals level 2 and written in English written by authors of non-English-language disciplines. Two articles were randomly selected from each journal so in total it amounted to 16 articles. Findings: This study looks at what rhetorical functions were used, and the textuality of the rhetorical functions used in the Introduction to articles written and published in SINTA-accredited journals level 2. “Indicating the Structure of the Research Paper” and “Announcing Principal Findings” were the least two rhetorical functions stated by the authors in the Introduction section. Two articles in this study fulfil the textuality components but the rests fail to fulfill the textuality components. Conclusion: Writing journal articles in English is a great challenge for Authors with an English as a foreign language (EFL) background. Language proficiency, academic language mastery, academic writing convention and mechanics awareness which include rhetorical functions and textuality might distract their content writing competence. Originality: Many studies searched the rhetorical functions of postgraduate theses, journal articles, and thesis abstracts in English written by non-native English; however, research on journal articles by Indonesian journal publishers is limited.
