Abstract

Background: Exposure to formaldehyde from a preserved cadaver can cause several health problems in students, lecturers, and laboratory technicians working in medical anatomy laboratories. These conditions include respiratory tract irritation and cancer due to acute and chronic exposure, respectively. Lowering the frequency of contact with formaldehyde from preserved organs helps to ensure the safety of students, lecturers, and laboratory technicians. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effectiveness of low concentration formalin as a preservative solution for goat kidneys. The organ was selected due to its anatomical structure similarity to humans.Method: Goat kidneys with 50-60 ml of volume were collected, washed, immersed in preservative solution, and stored for two months. The samples were then divided into four groups, which were preserved with different formalin concentrations, namely 30%, 20%, 10%, and 5%. The preservation parameters, namely organ structure and integrity, color, springiness, odor, and mold growth were qualitatively described, while the kidney volume was quantitatively measured. Results: After the samples were preserved for two months, they were observed, and all groups showed similar characteristics. The kidneys preserved with 5% or 10% formalin showed equal volume before and after two months of preservation. Conclusion: Low concentration formalin has the same effectiveness in preserving goat kidneys as the high concentration. It also has the potential to be applied in human anatomy learning.

Abstract

The purpose of forensic identification of cadavers is to identify each bone's usefulness in the identification process in addition to establishing the time and cause of death. Identification of skeletonized corpses will be difficult to assess, and pathological conditions such as broken bones and bruising of the bones are also an assessment of signs of violence in the individual. The results of the examination of the human skeleton show that one individual was identified. Meanwhile, bone is a mongoloid male, estimated to be between 20-25 years old with a bone height of 159 - 166 cm, in which bruises were found on top of the head. Post-mortem fractures were found at the tip of the distal femur and proximal tibia, and the estimated time of death is more than three months. The assessment of diatoms in the upper arm bones, which yielded a negative result, was done as a supporting investigation. Further, a sample of DNA was extracted from one of the second right ribs for analysis.

Abstract

Introduction: Triceps skinfold thickness is one of the anthropometric measurements that can indicate the nutritional status of overweight and obesity. Girls with obesity have 2.42 times the possibility of experiencing early menarche than girls with normal nutritional status. So it is estimated that the thicker triceps skinfold thickness, the earlier age at menarche in girls, but this opinion raises pros and cons through several studies, therefore the researcher wants to see the relationship between the two variables. Methods: This research is a cross-sectional observational analytic study with a purposive sampling method. All samples were asked to read the informed consent form and fill out a questionnaire regarding the age at menarche and measurements were made on the triceps skinfold thickness in the upper arm area using a skinfold caliper. Then the variables were analyzed univariate and bivariate using the Spearman test. Results: Based on the results of the Spearman correlation test between triceps skinfold thickness and age at menarche, it can be seen that the age at menarche has a significant relationship with triceps skinfold thickness as seen from p<0.05 (p=0.012). From the correlation test, it was found that there was a negative correlation between the sample's age at menarche and triceps skinfold thickness (r = - 0.188).Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the age at menarche and triceps skinfold thickness in girls (age 11-16).

Abstract

Installation of a DJ Stent is a procedure performed in the field of urology to prevent or relieve ureteral obstruction.Technological developments in the field of medicine have changed the approach to surgical intervention in cases of kidney stones (especially kidney stones with a stone burden > 2 cm), from open surgery to endoscopic surgery, one of them is by percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). We report the case of a man with a right double J (DJ) stent that was placed 5 months previously. The patient underwent anamnesis, physical examination, supporting examinations and was then treated with ureteroscopic lithotripsy and PCNL. Complete clearance of the stone can be performed and the DJ stent can be removed uninterruptedly from the percutaneous access. Encrusted stents are still a challenge in urology where endourology remains the best choice of treatment. The management of DJ stents should also be based on follow-up and prevention by taking into account predisposing factors to encrustation such as urinary tract infections, diabetes mellitus, chronic renal failure, history of urolithiasis, diet and malabsorption.
