Abstract

ABSTRACT This study focused on analyzing  flouting of maxim that was performed by characters and the reasons for characters flouting maxims in The Help movie. This study used a qualitative content analysis. The data source was from The Help movie’s script. The data were in the form of dialogues and utterances among characters that contained of flouting maxims. Through the analysis process, the researcher found 32 data containing of all flouting of maxim types: flouting of maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of quality, flouting of maxim of relevance, and flouting of maxim of manner. In addition, the characters flouted the maxims due to several reasons such as competitive, convivial, collaborative, and conflictive. Maxim of quality became the most frequent flouted type and mostly came together with conflictive through making sarcastic utterances. The characters gave sarcastic utterances because the interlocutors kept talking about the speaker’s dislike topic, such as getting marriage and downgrading the job.Key words: Cooperative Principle, Conversational Maxims, Flouting of Maxims ABSTRAKFokus penelitian ini adalah untuk menganalisa jenis penyimpangan maksim yang dilakukan oleh karatkter dan alasan mengapa mereka menyimpang maksim di film The Help. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian analisis kualitatif pada konten. Sumber data adalah dari naskah film The Help dan data dalam bentuk dialog dan ujaran antara karakter yang berisi penyimpangan terhadap maksim. Setelah menganalisa data, peneliti menemukan 32 data yang menunjukkan semua jenis maksim telah disimpangkan di film The Help, yaitu maksim kuantitas, maksim kualitas, maksim relevansi, dan maksim cara. Selain itu, karakter menyimpang maksim karna beberapa alasan, yaitu kompetitif, konvivial, kolaboratif, dan konfliktif. Maksim kualitas menjadi tipe yang paling sering disimpang dan hampir semua menggunakan konfliktif sebagai alasan dengan membuat ujaran sarkastik. Ujaran sarkastik dibuat untuk menyinggung lawan bicara karena mereka terus membahas topik yang tidak disukai oleh penutur, seperti menyuruh untuk cepat menikah dan merendahkan pekerjaan.Kata kunci: Prinsip kooperatif, maksim konvensional, pinyampangan maksim.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to describe the types of repetitions in Shawn Mendes’ selected song lyrics to find their functions in the selected song lyrics that the researcher chooses for this study. This study employed a qualitative design with a stylistic approach that aims to the types and functions of repetitions in Shawn Mendes’ song lyrics. The result of this study shows that all nine types of repetitions were found in this study. There are forty-six alliterations, twenty-six assonances, twenty-one consonances, five refrains, four feminine rhymes, five masculine rhymes, two internal rhymes, eighteen end rhymes, and five approximate rhymes. And besides that, it is possible to have more than one type of repetitions and functions in one data. The most dominant repetition in this study is alliteration. After categorizing and interpreting the data, the researcher found three out of four functions of repetition found such as; to reinforce meaning, to emphasize certain words, and to link up or contrast words. And also based on the result mention above, the researcher can conclude that Shawn Mendes has a narrative style of writing because of the way he wrote his lyrics that has the repetition of persuasive lines that he often emphasized in his song lyrics.

Abstract

People have different dream in their life. To fulfill the dream, they need motivation because it makes people stronger to achieve their dream. The researcher identified the motivation hierarchy of human needs of the main character in Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter film using Maslow’s theory. Abraham’s character is basically motivated by his revenge to fulfill his human needs. This study discussed about the human needs of Abraham Lincoln as the main character in the film. This study was a descriptive qualitative study. The primary data were presented in the form of dialogues throughout the movie related to human needs of Abraham’s character in Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter film. The secondary data were supported by the previous studies, journals, theories and books. The data source was taken from the script, and dialogue of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter film. The result of this study showed that the researcher finds that Abraham’s character in Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter film fulfilled all of five stages of the hierarchy of human needs by Abraham Maslow such as physiological needs, the belongingness, esteem needs, safety needs. But he struggles to fulfil his self-actualization needs because to achieved his dream, he needs to do some works such as hunting the vampires.

Abstract

In this research, the researcher shows the forms of oppression which occur toward female character named Lakshmi. The five faces of oppression is a theory that is explained by Irish Marion Young. The kinds of oppression toward women can be found in Lakshmi’s character of Sold novel. This form of oppression somehow called as injustice action that adhere toward people or group because of several reasons, such as class, race and gender. The source of data of this study are collected from Patricia McCormick’s Sold novel and the data for this study is the evidence of oppression toward Lakshmi. The oppression is divided into exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism and violence. The results of this study are, Lakshmi got five faces oppression from group or person. Based on that analysis, the researcher concludes that the oppression toward women can be done by men also women. Therefore, the researcher believes that the oppression toward women is not happens because of gender that men is superior rather than women, but oppression can be happened due to power of domination and class.

Abstract

Mekanisme pertahanan diri merupakan proses dorongan yang melindungi individu dari kecemasan dan masalah. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui konflik yang dialami tokoh utama dalam novel Magic Hour karya Tissa TS dan Stanley Meulen dan mekanisme pertahanan diri tokoh dalam novel Magic Hour karya Tissa TS dan Stanley Meulen. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Data dalam penelitian berupa frasa dan kalimat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa; (1)Konflik eksternal yang terjadi pada tokoh Raina, ialah ketika konflik Raina dengan Gwenny, dan Dimas. Konflik internal yang terjadi pada tokoh Raina ialah, ketika Raina mengalami konflik batin setelah mengetahui jika Toby menyukai dirinya, konflik batin Raina ketika Dimas mengatakan perasaanya di depan Gwenny dan orang tuanya, serta konflik batin Raina ketika Gwenny kecewa karena telah mengetahui jika Dimas menyukai dirinya. (2)mekanisme pertahanan diri yaitu represi, sublismasi, proyeksi, pengalihan, regresi, agresi/apatis dan Fantasi. Tindakan represi yang dilakukan oleh tokoh Raina, Gwenny, Dimas, dan Toby ialah tindakan diam , ketakutan dan berbohong, tindakan sublismasi yang dilakukanToby ialah ketika ia tidak bisa menyampaikan perasaanya secara langsung, sehingga ia melakukan pengalihan dengan cara membuat lagu untuk Raina, tindakan proyeksi yang dilakukan Raina dan Gwenny ialah marah dan menggeretak, tindakan pengalihan yang terjadi pada tokoh Gweeny dan Raina ialah mencari sasaran untuk meluapakan amarah, tindakan regresi terjadi pada tokoh Gwenny ialah manja seperti anak kecil, tindakan agresi/apatis yang dilakukan tokoh Gwenny ialah egois dan tidak peduli dengan orang lain. Tindakan yang terakhir ialah fantasi, tindakan yang dilakukan Raina ialah bekhayal.

Abstract

ABSTRAKPenelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan perwatakan dan nilai moral tokoh utama pada novel Laskar Pelangi karya Andrea Hirata dan novel Mimpi Anak Pulau karya Abidah El Khalieqy. Perwatakan dari setiap tokoh utama terdiri atas sifat peduli, baik hati, terampil, pantang menyerah, pintar, temperamen, setia kawan, jujur, pengaggum, penyabar dan percaya diri. Pada nilai moral menurut teori Emile Dhurkem   terbia atas disiplin, kelekatan, dan otonomi. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah metode deskriptif komperatif yakni mendeskripsikan perwatakan dan nilai moral tokoh utama novel Laskar Pelangi karya Andrea Hirata dan novel Mimpi Anak Pulau karya Abidah El Khalieqy, yang dilanjutkan derngan membandingkan perwatakan dan nilai moral dari masing-masing tokoh. Data diperoleh dengan membaca novel Laskar Pelangi dan novel Mimpi Anak Pulau yang berupa kutipan kata-kata yang memiliki kaitan dengan perwatakan dan nilai moral pada tokoh utama. Hasil penelitian ini mendeskripsikan perbandingan perwatakkan dan nilai moral dari kedua tokoh utama dalam ke dua novel, yang terletak pada persamaan dan perbedaan. Persamaan perwatakan dari kedua tokoh terletak pada sifat peduli sesama, baik hati, terampil, pintar, dan pantang menyerah. Sedangkan perbedaan perwatakan dari kedua tokoh utama terletak pada sifat temperamen, pemerhati, setia kawan, jujur, pengaggum, penyabar, dan percaya diri. Sedangkan untuk nilai moral dari kedua  tokoh utama hanya terdapat persamaan sebagai berikut disiplin yaitu dapat membedakan anatar kepentingan untuk dirinya sendiri dengan kepentingan bersama, kelekatan yaitu saling memahami antara sesama dan selalu menyertakan orang lain dalam memutuskan sesuatu, otonom yaitu saling membantu, dapat menahan hawa nafsu dan saling mengingatkan. Perbedaan dari ke tiga aspek nilai moral tersebut di dalam kedua novel pada kedua tokoh utama tidak ditemukanya perbedaan. Kata kunci: nilai moral, novel, perwatakan, tokoh utama ABSTRACTThis research aims to describe the character and moral values of the main characters in the novel Laskar Pelangi by Andrea Hirata and the novel Mimpi Anak Pulau by Abidah El Khalieqy. The character of each main character consists of caring, kind, skilled, unyielding, smart, temperament, loyal friends, honest, admiring, patient and confident. On moral values according to the theory of Emile Dhurkem terbia on discipline, attachment, and autonomy. The method used in this research is a comparative descriptive method that describes the character and moral values of the main characters of the novel Laskar Pelangi by Andrea Hirata and the novel Mimpi Anak Pulau by Abidah El Khalieqy. Which is continued by comparing the character and moral values of each figure. Data were obtained by reading the novel Laskar Pelangi and the novel Mimpi Anak Pulau in the form of quotations of words that have to do with the character and moral values of the main characters. The results of this study describe the comparison of the character and moral values of the two main characters in the two novels, which lie in the similarities and differences. The similarity of the character of the two characters lies in the nature of caring for each other, kind -hearted, skilled, smart, and unyielding. While the difference in character of the two main characters lies in the nature of temperament, observer, loyal friend, honest, admirer, patient, and confident. As for the moral values of the two main characters there are only similarities as follows discipline that can distinguish between interests for themselves with common interests, attachment that is mutual understanding between each other and always include others in deciding something, autonomy that is mutual help, can restrain lust and remind each other. The differences from the three aspects of moral values in the two novels in the two main characters are not found differences.Keyword: moral values, novel, characterization, comparative literature, main characters

Abstract

ABSTRACT Song lyric is a literary work that contains the outpouring of personal feelings, emotions, and expressions of soul-shaped experiences in the form of the composition of words in a song. This finding is qualitative research using stylistic approach, which aims to identify types and functions of semantic deviation found in Maroon 5 song in album V. The utilized theories in this research are semantic deviation by Heinrich F. Plett (2010) and Laurence Perrine (1963). The data were lines which contained semantic deviations in Maroon 5 song in album V. The results of the research are as follows. First, eight out of twelve types of semantic deviation, there are in Maroon 5 song in album V, namely: 1) pleonasm, 2) oxymoron, 3) metaphor, 4) irony, 5) simile, 6) hyperbole, 7) paradox, and 8) litotes. Metaphor is the prominent type used in this work. This finding indicates that the songwriter tends to deliver his ideas through some comparisons. It is because metaphor gives the broadest freedom for creativity, but it also looks interesting. Second, there are four functions found, i.e: 1) to bring additional imaginary, 2) to add emotional intensity, 3) to afford imaginative pleasure, and 4) to say much in brief compass. To bring additional imaginary is the dominant function. This is because Adam Levine has the tendency to make his song lyrics by using interesting expression, and it imagined as if it was real.Keywords: stylistics, semantic deviation, Maroon 5 album V ABSTRAK Lirik lagu merupakan karya sastra yang berisi curahan perasaan pribadi, emosi, dan ekspresi pengalaman berbentuk jiwa berupa susunan kata-kata dalam sebuah lagu. Temuan ini adalah penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan stilistika, yang bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis dan fungsi deviasi semantik yang terdapat pada lagu Maroon 5 di album V. Teori yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah penyimpangan semantik oleh Heinrich F. Plett (2010) dan Laurence Perrine (1963). Data berupa baris-baris yang mengandung penyimpangn semantik pada lagu Maroon 5 album V. Hasil penelitian adalah sebagai berikut. Pertama, delapan dari dua belas jenis penyimpangan semantik terdapat pada lagu Maroon 5 di album V, yaitu: 1) pleonasm, 2) oxymoron, 3) metafora, 4) ironi, 5) simile, 6) hiperbola, 7) paradoks , dan 8) litotes. Metafora adalah tipe utama yang digunakan dalam karya ini. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa penulis lagu cenderung menyampaikan idenya melalui beberapa perbandingan. Karena metafora memberikan kebebasan seluas-luasnya untuk berkreasi, tetapi juga terlihat menarik. Kedua, ada empat fungsi yang ditemukan, yaitu: 1) untuk membawa tambahan imajiner, 2) untuk menambahkan intensitas emosional, 3) untuk membeli kesenangan imajinatif, dan 4) untuk mengatakan banyak di kompas singkat. Untuk membawa imajiner tambahan adalah fungsi yang dominan. Hal ini karena Adam Levine memiliki kecenderungan membuat lirik lagunya dengan ekspresi yang menarik, dan dibayangkan seolah-olah nyata.Kata Kunci: stilistik, penyimpangan semantic, Maroon 5 album V

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aimed at analyzing how the character development of the main character influenced the gothic conventions in Maleficent novel. In order to get more thorough understanding, theories by Hurlock and Snodgrass were employed. For personality development, it is divided into eight determinants, there are physical determinants, intellectual determinants, emotional determinants, social determinants, aspirations and achievements, sex determinants, educational determinants, and family determinants. For gothic conventions, there are atmosphere, setting, revenge, and supernatural. In order to identify the personality development and gothic conventions, qualitative research was employed to explore further. The result showed that Maleficent as the main character experienced personality development, there are physical changes, emotional changes and family who always stand with her. For gothic conventions, Maleficent experienced all of the type there are atmosphere, revenge and supernatural.Keywords: personality develoment, gothic conventions, gothic literature, Maleficent, fairy  ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana perkembangan karakter dari tokoh utama yang mempengaruhi kaidah-kaidah gothic dalam novel Maleficent. Untuk mendapatkan pemahaman yang lebih menyeluruh, penulis menggunakan teori Hurlock dan Snodgrass. Untuk perkembangan karakter dibedakan menjadi delapan faktor yaitu faktor fisik, faktor intelektual, faktor emosional, faktor sosial, aspirasi dan prestasi, faktor jenis kelamin, faktor pendidikan, dan faktor keluarga. Untuk kaidah gothic, diantaranya suasana, balas dendam, dan supernatural. Untuk mengindentifikasi perkembangan kepribadian dan kaidah-kaidah gothic, penelitian kualitatif digunakan untuk mengeksplorasi lebih jauh. Hasil dari penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Malefient sebagai tokoh utama mengalami perkembangan kepribadian, terjadi perubahan fisik, perubahan emosi, dan keluarga yang selalu mendampingi dirinya. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research analyzed translation techniques used in the translation of interrogative utterances by Little Prince’s character in the English novel The Little Prince into Indonesian Pangeran Cilik by Antoine De Saint-Exupery. The researcher used the theory of translation techniques by Molina and Albir (2002). This research was categorized as qualitative research.  The result of the research showed there were 12 techniques used in the data. They were, namely, adaptation, borrowing, compensation, description, discursive creative, established equivalent, linguistic amplification, linguistic compression, modulation, reduction, and transposition. The total data were 97 interrogative utterances by Little Prince’s character.  The total data of each techniques were as follows: (1) adaptation occurred 3 times, (2) amplification occurred 3 times, (3) borrowing occurred 1 time, (4) compensation occurred 3 times, (5) Description occurred 2 times, (6) discursive creation occurred 4 times, (7) established equivalent occurred 6 times, (8) literal translation occurred 38 times, (9) modulation occurred 6 times, (10) reduction occurred 23 times, (11) transposition occurred 8 times. Peneliti menggunakan teori teknik penerjemahan oleh Molina dan Albir (2002). Penelitian ini termasuk penelitian kualitatif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan ada 12 teknik yang digunakan dalam data. yaitu, adaptasi, peminjaman, kompensasi, deskripsi, kreasi diskursif, bentuk padanan, amplifikasi linguistik, kompresi linguistik, modulasi, reduksi, dan transposisi. Total data dari masing-masing teknik adalah sebagai berikut: (1) adaptasi ditemukan 3 kali,(2) amplifikasi (3) peminjaman ditemukan 1 kali, (3) kompensasi ditemukan 3 kali, (4) deskripsi ditemukan 2 kali, (5) kreasi diskursif ditemukan 4 kali , (6) bentuk padanan ditemukan 6 kali, (9) terjemahan literal ditemukan 38 kali, (10) modulasi muncul 6 kali, (11) reduksi muncul 23 kali, (12) transposisi ditemukan 8 kali. Peneliti menemukan teknik yang dominan digunakan oleh penerjemah adalah terjemahan literal dengan total 38 temuan.Kata kunci:  Penerjemahan, Teknik Penerjemahan, Ujaran Interogatif, The Little Prince, Pangeran Cilik

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe purpose of this research is to find out the kinds of gender discrimination toward Josey in North Country film. Further, the other purpose of this research is to identify Josey’s responses against gender discrimination as depicted in the film. In this research, the researcher focuses on examining kinds of gender discrimination by using Sheila McLean’s theory about kinds of gender discrimination and also focuses on what Josey’s responses against gender discrimination that happened to her in North Country film by using Feagin and Sikes’s theory of responses. Furthermore, the researcher uses qualitative-descriptive research and Miles and Huberman’s data analysis. In this film, the researcher finds there are four kinds of gender discrimination that have appeared in the film. The kinds of gender discrimination are subordination, marginalization, stereotype, and violence. In addition, those kinds of gender discrimination that happened toward Josey made Josey act three kinds of responses toward it. The three responses that acted by Josey in the film are withdrawal, resigned acceptance, and verbal confrontation.Keywords: gender discrimination, sheila mclean’s kinds of gender discrimination, feagin and sikes’s kinds of responses, north country.  ABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis diskriminasi gender terhadap Josey dalam film North Country. Selanjutnya, tujuan lain dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengidentifikasi tanggapan Josey terhadap diskriminasi gender seperti yang digambarkan dalam film tersebut. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti berfokus untuk mengkaji jenis-jenis diskriminasi gender dengan menggunakan teori Sheila McLean tentang jenis-jenis diskriminasi gender dan berfokus pada apa tanggapan Josey terhadap diskriminasi gender yang terjadi padanya dalam film North Country dengan menggunakan teori tanggapan Feagin dan Sikes. Selanjutnya, peneliti menggunakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dan analisis data Miles and Huberman. Dalam film ini, peneliti menemukan empat jenis diskriminasi gender yang muncul dalam film tersebut. Jenis-jenis diskriminasi gender adalah subordinasi, marginalisasi, stereotip, dan kekerasan. Selain itu, jenis-jenis diskriminasi gender yang terjadi pada Josey membuat Josey melakukan tiga macam tanggapan terhadapnya. Tiga tanggapan yang ditunjukkan oleh Josey dalam film tersebut adalah penarikan diri, penerimaan pasrah, dan konfrontasi verbal.Kata Kunci: diskriminasi gender, jenis-jenis diskriminasi gender sheila mclean, jenis respon feagin dan sikes, north country
