Abstract

The Cheng Ho Mosque in Surabaya is the study's main point since it is a cultural artifact with a structural layout and social objectives that combine Chinese and Islamic traditions. The Cheng Ho Mosque is a cultural object, as well as a social arena that represents hybrid culture. The cultural artifact serves as essential for understanding how social interaction takes place in an environment with symbols representing cultural hybridity. This study aims to show how Cheng Ho Mosque, as a cultural artifact, develops significance and becomes part of a cultural group's daily existence. The main theoretical framework used in this study is Cultural Identity Theory. Cultural semiotics is the research method that is being used. The study's findings suggest that the cultural semiotic frame analysis of the artifacts indicates three distinct characteristics of Surabaya's Cheng Ho Mosque: a religious place, a commercial space, and a social space. Worship activities including prayer, reading the Holy Qur'an, and recitation are all part of the interactions in the mosque's main function. The architecture of the buildings surrounding the mosque, meanwhile, was designed to reflect the business culture and network of the Chinese community in Surabaya and the area, including the use of corporate sponsors for events that are not just religious but also for general community activities including sports and gatherings of the Surabaya Chinese community. The Cheng Ho Mosque is an artifact that represents the distinctive features of Chinese Muslims as a subculture.

The results of the study found that in these three videos, Padawara Group through these three videos have presented a story with a clear and simple structure so that the plot is easy to follow. The background shown in all three videos shows a stark difference between the very dirty beach conditions in the first video, when it is cleaned in the second video, and after the beach is cleaned in the third video. The message conveyed by the three videos is also very efficient and focused on the main goal. It is necessary to include the stories of the characters involved to find out what their motivation is to participate in this beach clean-up action and the challenges they face in order to increase the emotional closeness of the audience to the story.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly changed the social landscape for younger generations, affecting their communication styles and consequently their mental health. This research investigates the critical role of family resilience in improving family communication and its impact on family functioning, specifically as a strategy to strengthen mental well-being in generation Z. Family resilience is defined as the ability of a family to adapt, recover and thrive amid adversity, which promotes emotional support and shared strength among its members. Family communication includes the exchange of thoughts, feelings and information, which facilitates understanding and connectedness within the family unit. Family functioning refers to how families cope, communicate and interact, involving critical dimensions such as cohesion and flexibility that are important for maintaining healthy relationships. This study used a non-experimental quantitative research design.  Data collection used convenience techniques and obtained 251 participants aged 17 to 24 years. The measurement tools used in this study include: Family Assessment Device (FAD) to evaluate family functioning, Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire (WFRQ) for family resilience, and family communication scale to measure communication dynamics. The results showed a significant positive correlation between family resilience and family functioning (r = 0.90), family resilience and family communication (r = 0.80), and family communication and family functioning (r = 0.83). Family communication was shown to act as a partial mediator in the relationship between family resilience and family functioning. The findings of this study emphasize the importance of building family resilience and family communication to strengthen family functioning, ultimately contributing to improved mental health for generation Z after the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract

In a digital era, full of challenges, the phenomenon of hyperreality was becoming increasingly prominent, narrowing the difference between the real physical world and the world of digital simulations. Thanks to advances in technology, virtual influencers appear on social media as virtual figures who behave like real humans. This research seeks to discuss the impact and potential of virtual strategies in public relations (PR) practice in the digital realm. Integrating the concept of transmedia storytelling, the implication of this approach from a communication science perspective is to create a narrative flow that strengthens communication and messages. Characters and figures are created in such a way that they involve three elements, namely the storyteller, the fairy tale and the interacting listener. The storyteller in this case is the creator of the character, the fairy tale is the scenario in the form of the message to be conveyed, the listener who interacts is the involvement that is created. The aim of this research is to determine Hyperrealism in Transmedia Storytelling in Digital Public Relations Activities. This study uses a case study method with a common case approach, which takes Miquela as a virtual influencer case for further study. The research results highlight changes in communication activities from conventional to modern, especially through the use of technology and social media. Furthermore, this research shows that, in facing the complex digital era, PR needs to build and maintain a reputation that is honest, transparent and balanced between the digital and real worlds. In essence, this research not only provides theoretical input but also provides practical insight for PR professionals to face the dynamics of communication in the ever-growing digital world.

Abstract

Social media X allows its users to use anonymous accounts and hide their identities, leading Kpopers to prefer interacting anonymously. This study aims to describe the phenomenon of deindividuation that occurs among Kpopers using anonymous accounts on social media X. This study uses Social Identity of  Deindividuation Effect (SIDE) theory. Deindividuation refers to a state where the individual acts differently than usual because considers theirself to be part of group. It employs a descriptive qualitative method with a phenomenological approach and data collection techniques through semi-structured interviews with five anonymous Kpopers account users who actively interact on social media X. Observation and documentation of comments and activities of the informants on social media X were also conducted. The research results show that deindividuation can be seen in the anonymous Kpopers accounts on social media X when they use a fan account. The use of anonymous accounts causes user behavior to prioritize their identity as Kpopers and place greater importance on group norms rather than their personal norms. This deindividuation phenomenon occurs due to three factors, including anonymity, group immersion, and reduced identifiability. The anonymity factor occurs because anonymous Kpopers account users feel more comfortable and freer to express their opinions as Kpopers due to negative stigma towards those who idolize Kpop when revealing their real identity. Individuals first became Kpopers and did not experience group immersion, but when they joined social media X using an anonymous account, they began to show symptoms of group immersion. By joining the Kpopers group and using anonymous accounts as their identity, they focus more on their identity as Kpopers rather than as individuals. This causes them to start forgetting their personal identity (reduced identifiability).
