Abstract

This research proposed to find out whether local storytelling through book-creator was effective to enhance students’ reading comprehension. The quasi-experimental design was applied to English department students of STKIP Pamane Talino as the population. Among the population, 60 students were selected as the research sample through purposive sampling that further divided into the experimental group taught using book creator and the control group taught using the drill method. The data were obtained through pre and post-test in the form of 5 essay questions. Between the tests, two treatments were given to the experimental group. After the second treatment, both groups were given a posttest. The data obtained were further analyzed using a t-test through SPSS. The data analysis showed that based on the independent sample test that the significant value was 10,095 which is higher than than the critical score 1.8731 where the gain score of experimental group (0,8) was higher than that of the control group (0.3). Therefore, the conclusion that can be drawn from the research result was that using a book creator in teaching reading is effective. Consequently, teachers are recommended to use book-creator as local storytelling to enhance students' reading comprehension, especially for English department students in STKIP Pamane Talino.

The research was conducted to describe students’ activities in reading comprehension classroom, especially in learning narrative text. A qualitative descriptive approach was used in this research. To collect the data, observation, interview, and test were employed to gather the data of students’ activities in learning narrative text within reading comprehension class. Data from observation and interview were analyzed descriptively, while data from test were first calculated to find the mean of the score, then they were used to analyzed the minimum criteria of achivement (Kriteria Ketuntasan Minimun/ KKM). Based on the observation, it yielded that the student activities in learning narrative text were 1) identifying difficult vocabulary, 2) translating the vocabulary over dictionary, 3) asking teachers or peers to comprehend meaning, 4) writing the correction in the paper, 5) reviewing initial analysis, 6) asking teachers or peers for main ideas and supporting detail, 7) giving overall corrections, and 8) summarizing. Furthermore, the test result showed that the student's scores are different from other students such as five students getting a good score, twelve students getting enough score, and three students getting less score. The students' average score of reading is 73,75 which was above KKM. The interview result discovered that most of them thought that the eight reading activities above gave much influences on students understanding on reading narrative texts and their ability in completing the test. The methodological approach is the qualitative research method. The theoretical framework used as the main theory of this research is Quirk et. al‘s (1992) intensifier theory and Lakoff's (1975) women’s language features. The result found that there are 95 intensifiers. First, emphasizers (58%) with attitudinal and style disjuncts (46%) and 12%. Second, amplifiers (25%) with maximizers (18%) and boosters (7%). Lastly, downtoners (16%) with compromiser (1%), diminisher (1%), minimizer (7%), and approximator (6%). The most prevalent sort of intensifier used by Kamala and Hillary was the emphasizer attitudinal disjunct, e.g. "Clearly, Actually, Of course, Probably, Certainly, Really" The most prevalent convey varying levels of certainty and uncertainty about what is being conveyed. Additionally, it was discovered that the two female politicians were using these words as part of a persuasive strategy to convince the audience.

Abstract

In this digital era, the era of a digital-dependent society, English teachers have to possess digital literacy skills (locating and consuming digital contents, creating digital contents, communicating digital contents) apart of master English language skills and pedagogical skills. The level of English teachers’ digital literacy skills is assumed to correlate to the frequency of digital media they used in ELT classes. Thus, to prove that assumption, the researcher conducted this study using a correlational research design. Self-assessment questionnaires were distributed to 24 English teachers in several regions in East Java. Then, the results showed that there was a significant correlation between the level of digital literacy skills and the frequency of digital media use in ELT classes. It leads to the conclusion that the higher the level of digital literacy, the more frequent digital media use in ELT classrooms. Knowing this, improving English teachers’ level of digital literacy skills matters

Abstract

People cannot attain a communicative goal unless their words address specific cultural or contextual challenges. Thus, language is viewed as a social tool to assist humans in conveying meaning; but, this meaning cannot be obtained if words are conveyed in isolation. As a result, we require contexts or settings in which more phrases and words can be placed in order for listeners or readers to comprehend the meaning behind utterances and words. By applying Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory, this study aims to observe one of three types of meanings, it was ideational meanings. It focuses on language which is used by people in both types of local and regional newspapers to convey information or messages about the experiences of the speakers. Each speaker used different clauses which contained dependent and independent clauses that we call clause complex. To analyze the aspect of projection; Hypotactic Locution, Paratactic Locution, Hypotactic Idea, Paratactic Idea, and Quasi-Projection which were used or appeared in Indonesian newspapers’ story texts. The significance of the study is to improve students’ linguistic knowledge and their writing skill by mastering text structures.
