Abstract

Scientific literacy is an essential competency for prospective elementary school teachers in designing meaningful learning experiences based on scientific reasoning. However, many PGSD students still experience difficulties in explaining scientific phenomena, assessing investigation designs, and interpreting data or evidence, especially on astronomical topics that are abstract and prone to misconceptions. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of using the planetarium software Stellarium in improving students' scientific literacy on the topics of Earth's rotation, revolution, and lunar phases. The method used was a quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design in two whole-class groups, where the experimental group received dynamic visual simulation-based learning using Stellarium, and the control group followed conventional learning. The results showed that the experimental group had significantly higher scientific literacy scores than the control group (mean 74.49 vs. 64.84; p = 0.010; g ≈ 1.23). The strongest effects occurred in the subprocesses of “explaining phenomena” (g ≈ 1.42) and “interpreting data/evidence” (g ≈ 1.50), while “assessing/designing investigations” showed moderate improvement (g ≈ 0.76). Qualitative data from reflections and interviews confirmed a conceptual shift from common misconceptions (e.g., the causes of seasons or lunar phases) to a coherent, model-based understanding evidenced by visualizations from the simulation. These findings suggest that the use of Stellarium not only improved conceptual accuracy but also strengthened students' ability to connect observations, models, and evidence to explain astronomical phenomena. This study concludes that visual simulation-based learning such as Stellarium is effective in improving the scientific literacy of elementary school teacher (PGSD) students. Implications include the need for systematic integration of evidence-based digital media into the Earth and Space Science curriculum to address misconceptions and strengthen prospective teachers' scientific reasoning skills.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model assisted by Wordwall media on the mathematics learning outcomes of fifth-grade students at SD GKPS Saribudolok, focusing on the topic of perimeter and area of plane figures. This research employed an experimental method with a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design without a control group. A total of 36 students from class V-A participated as research subjects. Data were collected through pretests, posttests, and student response questionnaires. Data analysis was conducted using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and one-sample t-test with the assistance of SPSS version 25. The results indicate a significant improvement in students' learning outcomes after the implementation of the PBL model assisted by Wordwall. The average pretest score of 59.33 (categorized as poor) increased to 79.88 (categorized as good) in the posttest, with 75% of students achieving mastery learning above the minimum competency criteria. Normality tests confirmed that the data were normally distributed (p > 0.05), and the t-test results showed that tcount ≥ ttable (3.820 ≥ 2.030) with a significance value of 0.001 < 0.05, indicating a positive and significant effect of using PBL with Wordwall on mathematics learning outcomes. Furthermore, students’ responses toward the learning model were categorized as very good (mean = 92.16). Thus, PBL assisted by Wordwall can be considered an effective learning strategy to improve mathematics learning achievement and student motivation.

Abstract

Civic Education (PKn) at the elementary school level plays a strategic role in instilling national values and shaping the character of responsible and active citizens from an early age. However, its implementation in the field is often still conventional and monotonous, thus requiring new approaches that are more engaging and meaningful. This study aims to identify enjoyable Civic Education learning strategies that align with the characteristics of elementary school students. The method used is a literature review by examining various national and international references. The discussion reveals that strategies such as Project-Based Learning, collaborative learning, role play, the use of educational technology, and differentiated instruction are effective in enhancing student participation, understanding, and internalization of civic values. In addition, the implementation of these strategies faces challenges such as limited teacher competence, inadequate facilities, and classroom management issues. Therefore, systemic support from schools, governments, and the community is needed to create Civic Education learning environments that are active, relevant, and enjoyable.

Abstract

Scientific literacy and critical thinking skills are essential competencies for elementary school students in the global era. Scientific literacy is not only the mastery of scientific concepts, but also the ability to use that knowledge to understand phenomena and make evidence-based decisions, which are important foundations in developing students' critical thinking skills. This study aims to analyze the relationship between scientific literacy and critical thinking skills in fourth-grade students at SDN Ciptomulyo 1 Malang. The problem identified in this study is the need to improve students' critical thinking skills, especially in the aspects of evaluation and reflection on complex information. The method used is qualitative with a population of all parties related to learning in fourth grade, and the research subjects consisted of teachers and 24 fourth-grade students who were selected purposively. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, narrative and tabular presentation, classification, source triangulation, and drawing conclusions. This research is relevant and urgent to conduct because scientific literacy and critical thinking skills are highly needed today, especially in facing the challenges of the 21st century. The results show that students with high scientific literacy tend to have good critical thinking skills, especially in analysis, interpretation, and evidence- based decision-making. Research findings show that students with high scientific literacy scores tend to have high critical thinking scores. However, their ability to evaluate and reflect on complex information still needs improvement. The study's conclusions confirm that scientific literacy is an important foundation for developing critical thinking skills, supported by interactive learning methods and the role of teachers. Consequently, schools need to actively integrate scientific literacy into their learning, develop innovative learning methods, and provide adequate learning resources to enhance students' critical thinking skills.
