Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effect of using flashcard media on the symbolic thinking ability of children aged 4–5 years at TK Negeri 54 Talang Bukit. The study employed a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental method with a Non-Equivalent Control Group Design. The research subjects consisted of an experimental group (10 children) and a control group (7 children). The experimental group was taught using flashcard media, while the control group used conventional learning media. Data were collected through observation of children’s symbolic thinking abilities and analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality and homogeneity tests, and hypothesis testing with an Independent Sample t-test. The results showed that the mean score of symbolic thinking ability in the experimental group increased from 18 in the pretest to 27.70 in the posttest, while the control group increased from 17 to 20.29. The hypothesis test revealed a Sig. (2-tailed) value of 0.000 with a t-value of 5.568, which was higher than the t-table value of 1.753, indicating a significant difference between the experimental and control groups. These findings indicate that the use of flashcard media has a significant effect on the symbolic thinking ability of children aged 4–5 years. Therefore, flashcard media can be used as an effective learning medium to stimulate early childhood cognitive development, particularly in developing symbolic thinking skills as a foundation for literacy and numeracy development at subsequent educational levels.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of pop-up media in improving interaction and communication skills of kindergarten B students. The problem underlying this research is the low level of children’s verbal interaction and communication skills during classroom learning activities. This study employed a quantitative experimental method using a pretest–posttest control group design. The participants were 16 kindergarten students divided into an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group was taught using pop-up media, while the control group received conventional instruction. Data were collected through observation sheets and performance tests, and were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test. The results showed that the significance values were 0.012 and 0.011, which are lower than 0.05, indicating a significant difference between pretest and posttest scores. These findings demonstrate that the use of pop-up media has a significant positive effect on improving children’s interaction and communication skills. Therefore, pop-up media can be considered an effective and engaging learning medium to support language and communication development in early childhood education.

Abstract

Student motivation in social studies on local environmental topics remains low due to teacher-centered learning and limited contextual experiences. This study examines the implementation of outdoor learning to enhance motivation and student responses in fourth-grade students at SDN Gudang Kopi I, while describing the planning and execution of the learning process. The study employs a qualitative case study approach, focusing on a single context in depth. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, direct observation of outdoor activities, field notes, and supporting documentation, then analyzed descriptively. Findings indicate that outdoor learning was structured with teaching modules, task division, and the use of the surrounding environment as a learning resource. Implementation increased student motivation, reflected in active participation, focus, curiosity, willingness to ask questions, and engagement. Students also showed positive responses to this learning experience. The study concludes that outdoor learning effectively transforms abstract content into concrete experiences, strengthening motivation, engagement, and positive student responses. Implications highlight the importance of systematic teacher planning, guidance during field activities, and the use of the environment as a contextual learning laboratory in social studies instruction.

Abstract

This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-concept and premarital sexual behavior among adolescents in Maro Sebo District. The study employed a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The participants consisted of 48 adolescents selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using closed-ended questionnaires to measure self-concept and premarital sexual behavior. Prior to hypothesis testing, the data were examined through normality and linearity tests as prerequisites for statistical analysis. The data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment correlation test. The results showed that the correlation coefficient between self-concept and premarital sexual behavior was r = –0.013 with a significance value of p = 0.931, indicating no significant relationship between the two variables. Although the negative correlation suggests that a more positive self-concept tends to be associated with lower premarital sexual behavior, the relationship was extremely weak and not statistically significant. These findings indicate that self-concept is not a dominant factor directly influencing premarital sexual behavior among adolescents. Therefore, premarital sexual behavior should be understood as a multidimensional phenomenon influenced by various internal and external factors. This study is expected to provide a reference for developing more comprehensive adolescent guidance and intervention programs involving families, schools, and the social environment.

Abstract

This study investigates the effect of the Problem Based Learning model assisted by interactive media on the critical thinking skills of 4th grade elementary students in learning about cultural diversity. A quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group was used, involving an experimental class applying Problem Based Learning with interactive media and a control class with conventional teaching. Critical thinking was measured using essay tests based on Ennis’ FRISCO indicators. Results showed that the experimental class’s average critical thinking score increased significantly from 64.69 (pretest) to 84.00 (posttest), whereas the control class rose from 64.13 to 71.91. The N-Gain in the experimental class (55.68%) was in the “moderate” category, markedly higher than the control’s N-Gain (22.02%, “low”). An independent t-test confirmed a significant difference in posttest scores (p < 0.001), indicating the experimental group outperformed the control in critical thinking. The effect size of the Problem Based Learning with interactive media treatment was very large (d ≈ 3.0), about twice that of the conventional method, highlighting the model’s practical effectiveness. These findings demonstrate that Problem Based Learning assisted by interactive media has a strong positive impact on students’ critical thinking skills. The interactive media made abstract cultural concepts more concrete and engaging, fostering deeper analysis and problem-solving. The study concludes that integrating Problem Based Learning with interactive learning media is an effective strategy to enhance critical thinking in elementary social studies, significantly outperforming traditional teacher-centered instruction.
