Abstract

This Classroom Action Research aims to improve students’ low reading skills. Improving reading skills will promote brain development and imagination, develop language and emotions, and strengthen relationships. Through Fantasy Shadow Puppet, students will be more interested and motivated to learn to read. To obtain the desired research results, a quantitative approach with two cycles was used. Each of the cycles covered four competencies, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data was obtained by observing 20 students of Group B at TKM NU 262 AL KAMAL SIDOARJO using observation sheets. The results of the study showed a very significant increase in the students' reading ability up to 37.63% after learning using Fantasy Shadow Puppets. With Fantasy Shadow Puppets students can ask questions, guess which, then find answers (language development reactions) to the storylines they hear, the span of attention to stories becomes longer because students concentrate on stories, and are able to organize their own abilities because children learn from amazing experiences so that they will build confidence in what is conveyed.

Abstract

This study formulated a model for differentiated instruction at a kindergarten and described the factors that promoted or inhibited its implementation. A qualitative case study design was employed. The data were gathered through interview, observation, and documentation. The study involved a kindergarten principal, two kindergarten teachers, and 15 students from Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal kindergarten as the mover school. Researchers were assisted by an interview guideline, an observation guideline, and documentations. Data analysis was performed based on Miles and Huberman’s interactive model. The data were validated through source and technique triangulation. Differentiated instruction was conducted using the center learning model, using demonstration, outing-class, and role-playing methods. Factors that facilitated the differentiated instruction implementation at the kindergarten included a supportive, safe, and comfortable learning environment, sufficient resources and materials, students’ psychological conditions and preparedness for learning, and the active engagement of school communities inside and outside the school. Factors that promoted the process comprised the scarcity of learning resources, insufficient infrastructure, a shortage of qualified educators, and the psychological well-being of students during the learning process. The instructional media used for the instruction were loose parts and natural materials surrounding the children.

Abstract

Social skills play an important role in the academic and social success of early childhood, but teachers are not stimulated optimally. This study investigated the impact of outbound games on the social skills of group B (5-6 years old) at TK ABA Karangkunti. A pretest-posttest design was used with a sample of 10 children. Social skills data were gathered using an observation guide with an interval scale. The experimental treatment involved 10 outbound games, and data from pretests and posttests were analyzed using the Wilcoxon technique in SPSS. This study found that outbound games can improve the social skills of children at TK ABA Karangkunti, suggesting that this method is effective. However, the study is limited by a small sample size and specific context. Further research with a broader scope is recommended to validate these results and examine the long-term effects of outbound games on children's social skills.

Integrated Early Childhood Education (PAUD Terpadu) ‘Aisyiyah Nur’aini Unit Two Yogyakarta is a pilot school that implements STEAM project-based learning. However, no research has discussed the implementation. Therefore, the present study aims to know, analyze, and describe STEAM project-based learning. The research subjects, or the informants, were four classroom teachers for children aged five to six. The classes implement STEAM project-based learning. The research belongs to a case study with the data collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The data were analyzed using Miles and Huberman techniques with three stages: data collection, data reduction, and conclusion drawing. The results showed several characteristics of STEAM project-based learning in PAUD Terpadu ‘Aisyiyah Nur’aini Unit Two. Abstract

With the amount of abundant information in an online environment, critical literacy is needed to encounter misinformation and disinformation. Critical literacy can be taught from the early age to strength the ability to understand information and to think the meaning of information, stories, events, pictures and others. The research aim was to explore the critical literacy activities in early childhood education using a picture book and contextual setting with the theme of environment activities. The research used a qualitative approach using thematic analysis. Themes were gathered through observations and conversations with children. All information and patterns were coded and interpreted to create themes. The sample used purposive sampling, from 13 children aged 5 to 6-year-old in the coastal region of the Tomini Gulf during their literacy activities. The results showed that children had an awareness to connect the issue from the topic to their daily lives. These activities give children the chance to voice their opinion and solution even though the exploration to this activity has not been fully maximized. Lastly, children engaged in the literacy activity through identifying and creating meaning from the pictures and other clues of the book. Therefore, implementing critical literacy should integrate familiar settings and picture books that in line to children’s literacy.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to explore the role of fathers in caring for early childhood children in Javanese culture. The phenomenon of fatherlessness in parenting is increasingly widespread in Indonesia. The Javanese tribe, one of the largest ethnic groups in Indonesia, was the sample in this research. The research method used is qualitative research with an ethnoparenting approach. The research locus was determined based on the subject's domicile, which was the Wonolelo area, Pleret, Bantul, Yogyakarta. The snowball technique was used as a method in selecting respondents. Involving 14 families as participants, the data was collecting through direct observation and interviews. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The research results show that the role of the father in the Javanese tribe of Wonolelo Village is still the same as the role of most fathers in Indonesia, namely as a decision maker and as a leader, the economic provider, where the family still adheres to a patriarchal culture. Fathers do not always directly involve in parenting at children's daily life. Fathers play more of a role as disciplinarians, role models in carrying out religious teachings, cultural and social traditions. The mother dominates the parenting role at home. It is essential for fathers to increase their parenting role by interacting directly to meet children's psychological and physiological needs.

Abstract

Abduction is an event that has long-term impacts on its victims, such as trauma, stress, and confusion, and children are no exception. To prevent children from becoming victims again, an effective effort is to provide knowledge about abduction. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the AVOID game on children's knowledge about abduction prevention at TK ABA Danunegaran. The design used is a pre-test and post-test with a sample of 28 children. Furthermore, for data analysis techniques, the Wilcoxon test was used. The results showed that the Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) value was 0.000 < 0.05, thus it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of the AVOID game on children's knowledge about abduction prevention. This study is limited to the number of samples and specific context, so further research is recommended to validate and test the long-term impact of the game on children's knowledge.

Abstract

Playing has become an effective method to holistically stimulate various aspects of child development. However, misconceptions among early childhood education (PAUD) teachers regarding the concept of Play-Based Learning (PBL) can lead to potential malpractice. Therefore, this study aims to explore the extent of PAUD teachers' experiences in Yogyakarta City in implementing PBL. Using a survey design, this research produced both quantitative and qualitative data. Data collection was conducted with the assistance of Google Forms, targeting PAUD teachers in Yogyakarta City through random sampling (N=41) using closed, semi-open, and open-ended questions. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis. The results showed that 12.2% of PAUD teachers in Yogyakarta City had low experience in implementing PBL, 56.1% were in the medium category, and the remaining 31.7% were in the high category. This condition is supported by PAUD teachers' recognition that they face a challenge in needing to have broad insights. Meanwhile, four weaknesses of teachers include the various disparity of teacher’s understanding of the PBL concept and three main skills that still require support to improve the quality of PBL implementation and overcome existing weaknesses. Therefore, the study recommends the need to facilitate the strengthening of PAUD teachers' skills tailored to their cluster needs in implementing PBL.
