Abstract

This study aims to identify the types and causes of errors made by ninth-grade high-achieving students at SMP Yapis Manokwari in solving Systems of Linear Equations in Two Variables (SPLDV) problems based on Kastolan’s Theory. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The research subjects were selected using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected through written tests, semi-structured interviews, and documentation. The research instruments consisted of SPLDV test items and interview guidelines that had been validated by two Mathematics Education lecturers. The data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that high-achieving students still made conceptual, procedural, and technical errors in solving SPLDV problems. Conceptual errors were indicated by students’ inability to translate word problems into appropriate mathematical models. Procedural errors were reflected in the incorrect application of solution steps and the failure to complete the solution process. Technical errors were identified through mistakes in arithmetic operations. The causes of these errors included internal factors, such as a lack of conceptual understanding, weak computational skills, low accuracy, and forgetting solution procedures, as well as external factors, including poor study habits, lack of material review, teaching methods, and an unconducive learning environment. In conclusion, high-achieving students are still prone to making errors in solving SPLDV problems despite having good academic performance.   Keyword : Student Errors, SPLDV, Kastolan Theory, High-Achieving Students

Abstract

This study aims to examine students' statistical thinking processes in interpreting data and to identify their statistical thinking levels. This study used a qualitative case study design involving six tenth-grade students who were purposively selected based on their mathematical abilities. Data were collected through tests, observations, and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed based on indicators of statistical thinking stages, namely interpreting data, quantitative reasoning, organizing data, inferring, and integrating thought processes. The results showed clear differences between student ability levels: high-ability students were able to think systematically and in an integrated manner, thus reaching the analytical level; medium-ability students were able to achieve most stages but were still limited in interpretative accuracy, thus moving from the quantitative to analytical level; while low-ability students showed partial understanding and experienced misconceptions, thus moving from the idiosyncratic to transitional level. These findings indicate that statistical thinking develops gradually and is strongly influenced by conceptual understanding and data interpretation skills. Therefore, a learning design that can strengthen interpretation skills in depth is needed.   Keywords: Statistical Thinking, Student Ability, Stages of Statistical Thinking

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of the mathematical problem-solving abilities of 10th-grade students at Advent High School in Manokwari on the topic of geometric sequences and series based on Polya’s theory. The method used was a mixed-methods approach with a sample of 30 students. Data were collected through written tests and interviews. The results showed that students’ problem-solving skills fell into the high category (20%), the moderate category (53.33%), and the low category (26.67%). The best regression model obtained was Ŷ = -32.914 + 35.797X₁ + 75.199X₂ - 60.017X₄ + ε, with a coefficient of determination of 46.9%. In conclusion, the ability to understand problems and formulate solution plans are the factors that most influence students’ success in solving geometric sequences and series problems; therefore, mathematics instruction needs to place greater emphasis on developing students’ ability to understand problems, design solution strategies, and think systematically.   Keywords: Geometric Sequences and Series, Problem-Solving Skills, Backward Method, Polya’s Theory

Abstract

This study aims to identify and describe the learning obstacles experienced by 11th-grade students in understanding the concept of quadratic functions. The research method used in this study was phenomenology, involving 25 students at SMAN 1 Serang Baru, from whom 3 students were purposively selected as representatives. The results of the study indicate that students experience three types of learning obstacles: ontogenetic obstacles in the form of gaps in understanding prerequisite material; didactic obstacles in the form of a tendency to follow learning procedures without comprehending the concepts thoroughly; and epistemological obstacles in the form of errors in understanding quadratic equations, discriminants, and the graphical representation of parabolas. The conclusion of this study highlights the importance of instructional designs that address students’ needs, strengthen conceptual understanding, bridge prerequisite material with new material, and build students’ self-confidence throughout the learning process.   Keywords: Didactical Obstacle; Epistemological Obstacle; Learning Obstacle; Ontogenic Obstacle; Quadratic Function

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship among Mathematical Anxiety Syndrome, conceptual understanding, and students’ learning outcomes in an Elementary Linear Algebra course and to examine whether conceptual understanding acts as a mediating variable. The method used was a quantitative correlational design involving 30 undergraduate mathematics education students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a mathematics anxiety scale, an open-ended conceptual understanding test, and documentation of course grades. The results show that mathematics anxiety is not significantly related to either conceptual understanding or learning outcomes. In contrast, conceptual understanding has a strong positive relationship with learning outcomes and serves as a significant predictor of academic performance. The mediation test indicates that conceptual understanding does not mediate the relationship between mathematics anxiety and learning outcomes. The study concludes that students’ success in Elementary Linear Algebra is shaped more by the depth of conceptual understanding than by their level of mathematics anxiety.   Keywords: Conceptual Understanding, Elementary Linear Algebra, Learning Outcomes, Mathematics Anxiety.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze students' errors in solving matrix problems from the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach. The method used is a qualitative descriptive study with 33 students of grade XI of SMA Negeri 1 Pomalaa as research subjects. Data were collected through tests, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing techniques. The results showed that students still experienced errors in understanding the problem (9.09%), conceptual errors (27.27%), procedural errors (42.42%), and arithmetic operation errors (45.45%). The most dominant errors were arithmetic operation errors, especially in matrix multiplication, determinants, and matrix inverses. In addition, students' conceptual understanding ability was in the high category at 27.27%, the medium category at 66.67%, and the low category at 6.06%. Factors causing errors included a low understanding of basic matrix concepts, lack of accuracy in calculations, and difficulty understanding contextual problems. The conclusion of this study shows that although the RME approach helps students connect matrix concepts with real situations so that learning becomes more meaningful, students still need to strengthen their conceptual understanding, calculation accuracy, and the ability to systematically organize solution steps to minimize errors in solving matrix problems.   Keywords: Error Analysis, Matrix, RME Approach, Conceptual Understanding, Mathematics Learning

Abstract

This research aims to analyze college students’ problem-solving abilities in solving non-routine promblems on the topic of limits. The type of research employed is descriptive qualitative. The research subjects were 15 mathematics students at Universitas Papua. From the total subjects, 4 students were selected using a purposive sampling technique as focus subjects for in depth interviews, consisting of two subjects from the moderate category and two subjects from the low category. Data analysis was conducted based on Polya’s problem-solving stages: understanding the problem, devising a plan, carrying out the plan, and looking back. The results indicated that the majority of students were in the low ability category (12 students) and the remaining were in the moderate category (3 students0. Moderate category subjects were able to understand the problem well and write down fairly systematic resolution steps, but lacked precision in final execution. Meanwhile, low category subjects showed effort to resolve the problems but faced major obstacles during the stages of devising and carrying out plans due to weak understanding of prerequisite concepts, and all subjects tended to neglect the looking-back stage. In conclusion, students’ problem-solving ability in solving non-routine limit problems is dominated by the low category. Learning approaches that habituate students to solving non-routine tasks and strengthening metacognitive aspects in re-evaluating their work are highly required.   Keywords: Problem-Solving Ability, Non-Routine Problems, Limit, Polya
