Abstract

The limited availability of suitable land for oil palm cultivation encourages farmers to utilise tidal peatlands. However, tidal peatlands are considered less appropriate for oil palm plants. The utilisation of tidal peatlands for oil palm plantations hurts production, productivity, and income received by farmers if farmers do not apply standardised cultivation techniques. This study aims to analyse the application of independent oil palm cultivation techniques, the amount of income of independent oil palm farmers, and the efficiency level of independent oil palm production on tidal peatlands in Indragiri Hilir Regency. The sampling method used was the Accidental Sampling method with 40 samples. This study was conducted in two sub-districts in Indragiri Hilir Regency, namely Kempas District and Tempuling District, using GAP analysis of oil palm cultivation techniques, analysis of farm income and analysis of production efficiency with stochastic frontier. The results of the study indicate that the application of oil palm cultivation techniques on tidal peatlands has not followed the recommendations set by the Palm Oil Research Centre (PPKS) by the principles of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). Of the 11 recommended cultivation techniques, only land clearing, weed control, planting patterns, and harvesting were applied 100 per cent. The average production of oil palm on tidal peatlands reached 31,181 kg/year, with a productivity of 10,055 kg/ha/year. The average production cost incurred by farmers was Rp9.530.672/ha/year. The total income of farmers reached Rp19.432.482/ha/year, while the average net income of farmers was Rp.9.901.809/ha/year. All farmers who farm oil palm on tidal peatlands have achieved technical efficiency, but are not yet allocatively and economically efficient.

Abstract

Shallots have been a prime commodity in North Sumatra. The well-known cultivation center for shallots in North Sumatra is around Lake Toba, located at an altitude of 900 to 2000 meters above sea level, specifically in Samosir Regency. Sianjur Mulamula District is one of the main shallot-producing areas in Samosir Regency. This study aims to identify the factors affecting the sustainability of shallot farming and assess the sustainability status of shallot farming in Sianjur Mulamula District, Samosir Regency. The research method employed is Multi-Dimensional Scaling (MDS), evaluated from the Ecological, Economic, Socio-Cultural, Technological, and Institutional dimensions. The analysis results show that the sustainability index of shallot farming is 49.02, indicating a less sustainable condition. Further analysis identifies several sensitive attributes influencing the sustainability of shallot farming based on different dimensions. In the ecological dimension, the sensitive attributes include land suitability, land compatibility, and land potential. In the economic dimension, price is a key factor affecting sustainability. Meanwhile, the social dimension highlights the importance of family participation in the farming process. In the technological dimension, the processing industry is a significant sensitive attribute, and in the institutional dimension, extension activities play a crucial role in supporting sustainability. These findings are expected to provide recommendations for developing more sustainable policies and practices in shallot farming.

Abstract

Oil palm (Elaeis guineesis Jacq.) is an annual plant that plays an important role and oil palm is Indonesia's leading and main agricultural commodity or is often referred to as Indonesia's green jewel. Indonesia is the largest producer and exporter of CPO in the world to meet domestic and foreign needs, followed by Malaysia, Thailand, Nigeria, Colombia and Papua New Guinea. Even though Indonesia has indeed succeeded in becoming the largest CPO producer in the world, the reality shows that Indonesia has not been able to determine theselling price of CPO for the world market. It is not only the issue of market integration that is still determined by foreign markets. Therefore, private and state-owned palm oil factories usually calculate the cost of production using the processing cost method and analyze what factors influence the cost of production. For this reason, private and state-owned palm oil factories usually calculate the cost of production using the processing cost method  and analyze what factors influence the cost of production. The main objective of this research is to determine the influence of processing capacity, raw material supplies, oil and palm kernel oil yields and exploitation costs on the cost of processing so that it can provide added value for the company. This research uses secondary data and is analyzed using linear regression using SPSS. Based on the research results, it is known that processing capacity has no effect on the cost of processing and this is not in accordance with the hypothesis. Raw material supplies and yield achievements have a negative and significant effect on the cost of processing goods and are in accordance with the hypothesis. Exploitation costs have a positive and significant effect on the cost of processing and are in accordance with the hypothesis. Therefore, management must increase raw material supplies and production yields and reduce exploitation costs to reduce the cost of processing goods.

Abstract

The agricultural sector is one of the businesses with high risks and uncertainties. Sources of risk and uncertainty, among others, come from the natural environment, especially climate change, floods, droughts and explosions of plant pest organisms.  To overcome the losses of farmers, especially rice farming from the risk of crop failure, the government helps to protect farming businesses in the form of Rice Farming Insurance. This study aims to analyze the factors that influence farmers' decision to participate in rice farming insurance in Deli Serdang regency. The number of samples in this study was 100 samples with purposive sampling technique method. Factors influencing farmers' decision to participate in the rice farming insurance were analyzed using binary logistic regression. The results showed that the farmer's decision to participate in rice farming insurance can be explained by the variables of farmer education, income, number of family dependents, land area, farming experience, intensity of the risk of crop failure, insurance procedures and getting government assistance by 86.8% while the remaining 13.2% is explained by variables outside the model. Internal factors that influence farmers' decisions to participate in the rice farming insurance include land area and farming experience. External factors that influence farmers' decisions to participate in the rice farming insurance include the intenistas of the risk of crop failure, following the insurance program

Abstract

Padang City is one of the highest rice production areas in West Sumatra Province. However, there are significant risks and uncertainty in conducting rice cultivation including climate change, as well as being subject to pests and diseases of crops and livestock, and the fluctuation of rice prices in the market. Agricultural risk mitigation is a solution to dealing with high levels of risk. The Government has made efforts to mitigate agricultural risks through the Rice Farming Business Insurance (AUTP) program. Therefore, this study aims to analyse farmers' perceptions of the AUTP program in Padang City. The research method used is survey. Primary data were collected using a structured interviews for 100 respondents in three subdistricts. Respondents were selected by using non probability sampling with a purposive sampling method. The study results show that most of respondents already knew about the AUTP program from Extension Officers. However, almost 82 percent of respondents have never claimed due to the high percentage of damage claims (75% of the total affected land) which should be full filed.  Farmers’ reason for join the AUTP program is because of they had experienced crop failure. Though, they are willing to pay AUTP premiums of IDR 36,000/Ha per planting season as a protection for their rice farming businesses.
