Abstract

This study aimed to explore eighth-grade students' perceptions of their reading skills as reflected through self-assessment. Employing a descriptive quantitative research design, the study involved 14 eighth-grade students from a junior high school selected through total sampling. Data were collected using a Reading Self-Assessment Questionnaire consisting of seven indicators: reading engagement, reading comprehension, strategy use, self-monitoring, reading stamina, reading accuracy, and reading pace. Students responded to each item using a three-point scale (Yes, Somewhat, No), and the data were analyzed through frequency counts and percentage calculations. The findings revealed that students held the most positive perceptions of their reading stamina, with 92.9% reporting confidence in sustaining reading for extended periods. Strategy use also received relatively positive responses, with 50% of students indicating that they actively employed reading strategies when encountering difficulties. However, significant challenges were identified in reading accuracy, comprehension, and self-monitoring. A considerable proportion of students (78.6%) reported difficulties in reading words correctly, while 85.7% indicated that they rarely engaged in retelling as a comprehension monitoring strategy. These findings suggest that while students demonstrate willingness to engage in reading activities, they continue to face challenges in higher-order reading processes. The study underscores the importance of integrating self-assessment into reading instruction as a reflective and diagnostic tool, and recommends that teachers provide explicit instruction in comprehension strategies, vocabulary development, and metacognitive practices to support more effective and autonomous reading development at the junior high school level.

Abstract

Critical reasoning ability is one of the essential skills that students must possess to meet the demands of education in the 21st century. This study aims to describe and analyze students' critical reasoning skills in the Islamic Banking Accounting subject at SMK Muhammadiyah Sampit. The method used in this study is qualitative with a descriptive approach. The subjects of this study consisted of three 11th-grade students majoring in Islamic Banking Accounting who were selected through a purposive sampling technique based on high, medium, and low levels of critical reasoning ability. Data collection in this study was carried out through semi-structured tests and interviews, then analyzed using the model from Miles and Huberman, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. Data analysis was supported by NVivo software with Word Cloud and Word Tree visualizations. The research findings indicate that students' critical reasoning ability is reflected in three indicators: acquisition and processing of information and ideas, analysis and evaluation of reasoning, and reflection of thinking in decision-making. Students with high levels of critical reasoning ability show superior abilities in understanding information, analyzing problems, and reflecting on the learning process when compared to those with medium and low levels of ability. The results of this study reveal that the skills of understanding information, analyzing problems, and reflecting on learning experiences are interrelated in forming students' critical reasoning abilities in learning Islamic Banking Accounting.

Abstract

21st-century learning demands that students develop critical thinking skills, deeply understand concepts, and relate knowledge to real-life situations. However, learning practices in schools still tend to be teacher-centered, resulting in suboptimal student engagement. This study aims to analyze the implementation of in-depth learning (deep learning) through Meaningful Learning, Mindful Learning, and Joyful Learning in economics at SMA Negeri 4 Sampit and identify the obstacles faced in its implementation. The research used a qualitative approach with a case study design. The research informants consisted of two economics teachers and one vice principal for curriculum, who were selected randomly through purposive sampling. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation, then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña with validity tests through triangulation of sources and techniques. The results of the study indicate that the implementation of immersive learning has been applied at the planning, implementation, and evaluation stages of learning by linking material to real life, encouraging active student participation through discussions and presentations, and implementing assessments that pay attention to the learning process and outcomes. However, the implementation is not optimal due to teacher dominance, differences in student abilities, and unequal learning participation. This study shows that immersive learning has the potential to improve the quality of economics learning, but requires strengthening in the consistency of implementation and active student involvement.

Abstract

psychological and academic problems among students. The loss of a father's role in a child's life has the potential to impact emotional development, learning motivation, and academic achievement. However, not all students experience this condition; research shows that being fatherless is associated with a decline in academic achievement. Some students are still able to maintain and even achieve good academic performance through various efforts and strategies. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the strategies used by students fatherless in maintaining academic achievements at MA Nurul Ummah Sampit. This research employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. The subjects were two eleventh-grade students experiencing fatherlessness, while one homeroom teacher served as a supporting informant. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. Furthermore, the data were analyzed using descriptive qualitative analysis techniques through the stages of data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that fatherless students employ several strategies to maintain academic achievement, including managing their study time independently, actively participating in learning activities, utilizing various additional learning resources, maintaining learning motivation, and being able to deal adaptively with academic pressure. In addition to these internal factors, students' success in maintaining academic achievement is also supported by external factors such as support from their mothers, teachers, peers, and a conducive school environment. The findings of this study indicate that the condition of being fatherless is not always an obstacle to achieving academic achievement if students have good academic resilience and receive adequate social support from their surroundings.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in supporting the learning motivation of students in the Economics Education Study Program at Muhammadiyah University of Sampit. The study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive research type. The research informants consisted of four students who actively use AI in learning activities and one lecturer as a supporting informant. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña model. The results showed that AI was used by students to search for references, understand lecture material, create summaries, and assist in completing academic assignments. The use of AI provides benefits in the form of easy access to information, increased understanding of the material, efficiency of study time, and increased student self-confidence. In addition, AI contributes to increased learning motivation as demonstrated by students' perseverance, independence, and interest in learning. However, excessive use of AI has the potential to cause dependency, so it needs to be balanced with critical thinking skills and digital literacy. Thus, Artificial Intelligence can be an effective learning support tool in increasing student learning motivation.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of parenting patterns on children's character development in Batuah Village in 2025/2026. This study uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The research subjects consisted of two 12-year-old children with the initials NLH and NRH, and one parent with the initials Mrs. M. The technique for data collection was carried out through structured in-depth interviews, while data analysis was carried out using the NVivo 12 application through the components Word Cloud and Word Tree to identify the relationship between parenting styles and children's character development. The results of the study indicate that the parenting style applied by parents tends towards permissive parenting, characterized by weak parental control, loose and free parenting, a lack of rules and boundaries, and excessive freedom. This condition is influenced by parents' busy work schedules, resulting in suboptimal supervision and guidance of children. In terms of character, children have demonstrated positive attitudes such as respecting elders and understanding the importance of trust. However, character development indicators such as emotions, habits, and desires have not developed optimally. Children still have difficulty controlling their emotions, exhibit aggressive behavior, have negative habits such as hitting and pitting friends against each other, and tend to follow their own desires. Nevertheless, children have understood the importance of trust and strive to repair relationships after making mistakes.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery plays an important role in supporting students’ English language learning because it influences their ability to understand and communicate effectively. However, many junior high school students still experience difficulties in understanding, remembering, and using English vocabulary appropriately. Therefore, appropriate instructional media are needed to facilitate vocabulary learning and increase students’ engagement. This study aimed to investigate the effect of using pictures on students’ vocabulary mastery at the eighth grade of SMP Negeri 5 Bayan in the 2025/2026 academic year. This study employed a pre-experimental research design using a one-group pre-test and post-test design. The participants consisted of 19 eighth-grade students selected as the research sample. Data were collected through vocabulary tests administered before and after the implementation of picture media. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired sample t-test with the assistance of SPSS 15.0. The findings revealed that students’ vocabulary achievement improved after the implementation of picture media. The mean score increased from 32.21 in the pre-test to 50.32 in the post-test. The paired sample t-test showed a statistically significant difference between pre-test and post-test scores (t = -5.204, p < .001), indicating that picture media had a significant positive effect on students’ vocabulary mastery. In conclusion, the use of pictures can be considered an effective instructional medium to improve students’ vocabulary learning outcomes.
