Abstract

Hypertension is the primary risk factor for both disability and death worldwide, mainly due to two significant complications: strokes (cerebrovascular accidents) and ischemic heart disease. Hypertension is a condition when systolic blood pressure ≥140mmHg and or diastolic blood pressure ≥90mmHg. Patient adherence is an indicator of the efficacy of therapy. Patient adherence measurement could be done by indirect methods such as self-report and pill count methods. The study aims to determine the correlation between clinical factors and medication adherence in hypertensive patients at Rajabasa Indah Community Health Center. This is a descriptive-analytic study with a cross-sectional approach. Purposive sampling was used in the sampling technique. There are 100 respondents in this study, patients diagnosed with hypertension at Rajabasa Indah Community Health Center who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. A total of 45 patients were included in the category of non-adherent patients taking medication, and 55 patients were included in the category of patients who adhered to taking medication. This study showed that factors that influenced drug adherence in hypertensive patients were comorbidities (p=0.004), duration of treatment (p=0.007), the number of medications (p=0.002), and history of side effects (p=0.002). Medication adherence has been linked with some clinical factors such as comorbidities, duration of treatment, number of medications, and history of side effects. Incorporating adherence evaluation into the overall assessment of patients undergoing hypertension treatment should be essential.

Abstract

The problem of household waste in Ogan Ilir Regency is increasingly complex due to the characteristics of the wetland area. Poor management of household waste around the watershed can cause various problems, both environmental and public health issues. This study analyzes household management in settlements around the Ibul Besar II Village watershed. This study is qualitative. The informants in this study consisted of seven key informants and five ordinary informants who were selected using the purposive sampling method. Data was collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation (photovoice). The study results show that efforts to eliminate household waste still need to be improved. Four out of six housewives reuse used buckets. However, only two out of six housewives recycle. Household waste is not sorted into five types. The collection and transportation of household waste do not meet the requirements due to the unavailability of TPS or TPS 3R, waste carts, and limited waste transportation. The household waste is burned, and the waste is not processed. It can be concluded that household waste management in settlements around the Ibul Besar II Village watershed has not gone well. Waste reduction efforts are still limited, and waste handling needs to be corrected. Household waste management in Ibul Besar II Village experiences many obstacles, such as economic limitations, time, facilities, and infrastructure, and lack of public awareness and knowledge about the stages of good and correct household waste management.

Abstract

Excessive exposure to UV-B rays can increase melanin production, potentially causing skin damage, making it necessary to prevent this through the use of natural-based sunscreens, such as nano gel from methanol extract of andaliman, to protect the skin from the harmful effects of UV-B radiation. This study aims to evaluate the sunscreen effect of andaliman methanol extract nanogel on the amount of melanin in Wistar rats exposed to UV-B light. The method used was a laboratory experimental study with a randomized posttest only with a control group design using mice as the research subjects. The results of the study showed that the SPF values of andaliman extract at concentrations of 2%, 3.5%, and 5% were 2.11, 2.49, and 2.45, respectively, which are considered low for sunscreen protection standards. Additionally, the amount of melanin obtained from each treatment group was also categorized as small, indicating that the andaliman extract in nano gel form did not significantly reduce melanin production in Wistar rats exposed to UV-B rays. In conclusion, there is no sunscreen effect of andaliman methanol extract nanogel on the amount of melanin in Wistar rats exposed to UV-B light. This could be due to factors such as the low SPF value, the lack of stability of the active ingredients in the nano gel, or the need for an increased dosage. The implications of these findings suggest the need for further research to optimize the formulation or explore other more effective ingredients in preventing melanin production caused by UV-B exposure.

Abstract

Traumatic dental injuries are increasingly recognized as a significant dental health issue, particularly among children and adolescents. These injuries commonly result from falls, motorbike accidents, sports injuries, or violence. Both general dentists and specialists are responsible for providing emergency care for these injuries, making it essential for them to have sufficient knowledge and experience in managing such cases. This study aims to assess the personal factors influencing the emergency management of traumatic dental injuries among general dentists and specialists in Medan City. A quantitative, cross-sectional design was used, involving a total sample of 300 general and specialist dentists. Data analysis included univariate, bivariate, and multivariate methods. The results showed a significant correlation between knowledge, perception, experience, and work length in managing traumatic dental injuries (p<0.00). However, no correlation was found between age and gender with the ability to manage these injuries (p>0.00). Among the variables, knowledge was identified as the most influential factor. The study concludes that while knowledge, perception, experience, and work duration play a critical role in emergency management, age and gender do not. It is recommended that dentists in Medan continuously enhance their knowledge in this area to ensure effective treatment, reduce patient anxiety, and improve patient satisfaction.

Abstract

The tobacco industry is a significant obstacle in the effort to control smoking behavior, especially since they are allowed to promote their products to the public, including students. To address this issue, the Ministry of Health developed a smoke-free zone that may be implemented in universities to reduce smoking rates among adolescents. To know the effectiveness of implementing a smoke-free campus policy on smoking behavior control at Universitas Prima Indonesia by assessing aspects of student knowledge and compliance levels. This research is a descriptive quantitative study with a cross-sectional design and uses purposive sampling techniques with the criteria of active smoker students, 74 people in the medical study program of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences at Universitas Prima Indonesia. Data was obtained in February-April by distributing questionnaires directly to student smokers. The results showed that smoking behavior control among students increased in 50 (67.6%) out of 74 respondents. This is supported by the relationship between the level of knowledge and students' attitudes toward smoking behavior control in the smoke-free campus area, as indicated by a p-value<0.05 (0.005<0.05 and 0.001<0.05). This study found that students’ knowledge and attitudes towards smoke-free campus areas are important aspects influencing the effectiveness of the smoke-free campus policy in controlling smoking behavior.

Abstract

Emergency ambulance is an emergency service carried out outside the hospital, both trauma and non-trauma, which is carried out to prevent death and further disability. This service is carried out by increasing the ambulance response time. Emergency ambulance response time in pre-hospital emergency services can impact the assessment of patient triage levels in the development of modern triage, one of which is the Australasian Triage Scale (ATS). This study aims to determine the relationship between emergency ambulance response time and the Australasian Triage Scale (ATS) triage level in non-trauma case patients in Samarinda. The design of this study used a quantitative method, namely descriptive correlation, using a cross-sectional research design. The population in this study was 78 patients. Sampling used the total sampling technique. The instruments used in this study were observation sheets, stopwatches (response time), and the Australasian Triage Scale (ATS). This study was conducted for 3 months from March to May in Public Hospital Samarinda in 2024. Meanwhile, the person correlation test results found a p-value of 0.000<0.05, which means there is a relationship between the emergency ambulance response time to ATS Triage and an r-value of 0.767 where the strength of the relationship is high/strong. With a positive correlation result, the direction of the relationship is in the same direction. This means that the faster the emergency ambulance response time, the better (lower) the emergency condition of non-trauma patients based on the ATS triage level.

Abstract

Specimen homogenization and the addition of anticoagulants are pre-analytical steps that influence the accuracy of the test results. Complete blood count (CBC) is a screening test that supports disease diagnosis and aids in determining the appropriate therapy for patients. Inadequate specimens are inappropriate for subsequent testing, as they can lead to inaccurate results in the CBC examination. This study aims to determine the optimization of complete blood count results with variations in specimen handling and secondary homogenization techniques for whole blood. The type of research used is quantitative analysis using laboratory experimental methods. The study was conducted in May 2024 in the Clinical Pathology Laboratory of the Diploma-4 Medical Laboratory Technology Study Program, Faculty of Health Sciences, Muhammadiyah University of Sidoarjo, using 48 blood samples. The results of the MANOVA test indicate that the type of anticoagulant has a significant effect on the erythrocyte count (p=0.041) but does not have a significant impact on the leukocyte count (p=0.844) and platelet count (p=0.920). Meanwhile, the homogenization technique does not significantly affect the erythrocyte count (p=0.959), leukocyte count (p=0.991), or platelet count (p=0.867). This study concludes that the secondary homogenization technique has no significant effect. In contrast, the type of anticoagulant significantly impacts the results of the Complete Blood Count (CBC) test. This research suggests collecting whole blood specimens using Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetate (EDTA) vacutainers as the anticoagulant and applying a secondary homogenization technique before performing the CBC analysis.

Abstract

Female students aged 18-20, categorized as late teens, often suffer from chronic energy deficiency (CED), as indicated by upper arm circumference measurements. This condition can lead to anemia, impaired organ development, stunted physical growth, and reduced work productivity. This study investigates the relationship between nutritional knowledge, physical activity, and the incidence of CED among students at the Nutrition Department, Politeknik Kesehatan Kemenkes Bengkulu. An observational cross-sectional study was conducted with 92 participants. Nutritional knowledge was assessed using a self-administered questionnaire (Ques CA), physical activity was measured with the Baecky Physical Activity Questionnaire (BPAQ), and CED was determined by measuring upper arm circumference. The chi-square test analysis revealed no significant relationship between nutritional knowledge and CED (p-value=0.868). However, a significant relationship was found between physical activity and CED (p-value=0.001). Despite having good nutritional knowledge, many adolescents still experience CED due to its lack of application in daily life. Efforts are needed to enhance attitudes and behaviors toward better knowledge application. Additionally, upper arm circumference measurements indicate that physical activity may influence subcutaneous fat mass.
