Abstract

Language acquisition is a natural process where children acquire language without meaning to. Mean Length of Utterance (MLU) is used to measure language acquisition in a child's speech. MLU measures the average length of a child's utterances which reflects the language products produced. The aim of this research is to determine first language development in children aged 3 years 2 months. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with the subject being a child named Arabella. Data was collected through documentation techniques, namely recording and transcribing children's speech. The analysis results show that Arabella has 100 utterances with 210 morphemes. The MLU is 2.1 which means Arabella is in stage III for 27-28 months of age according to Brown's theory. Arabela's age should be at Stage VIII MLU. In terms of phonological acquisition, Arabella has mastered the pronunciation of vowels and some consonants well. However, some consonants such as /f/, /q/, /r/, /v/, /x/, and /z/ are still difficult for Arabella to pronounce.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the use of the inflectional affixes -es and -ed in the narrative text "The Enchanted Fish" and their implications for English language teaching. Employing a descriptive qualitative research method through content analysis, the study identifies the patterns of -es and -ed suffixes attached to verbs in the narrative text. The analysis reveals that the -es suffix represents verbs in the third-person singular form in the present tense, while the -ed suffix represents verbs in the past tense within the narrative. The findings suggest that the use of various tenses in narrative texts enhances storytelling depth and richness, aiding students in understanding contrasts between ongoing events, habitual actions or permanent states, and past occurrences. In this context, the analysis of -es and -ed inflectional affixes on verbs in narrative texts can serve as a resource for teaching students about word formation, which can then be expanded into sentence construction. Furthermore, mastering this grammatical aspect can simultaneously support students' competence in reading and writing narrative texts

Abstract

This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of Canva-based interactive PowerPoint media to enhance pronunciation skills among fifth-grade students at SD Muhammadiyah 8 Banjarmasin. Employing a Research and Development (R&D) methodology with a 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate), the research identifies specific learning needs, designs prototypes, validates media through expert reviews, and implements it in the classroom. Observations revealed challenges such as limited vocabulary, pronunciation difficulties, and monotonous teaching methods relying on textbooks and audio recordings. The developed media combines visual, audio, and interactive elements, including quizzes, to engage students. Validation results showed high feasibility, with expert ratings averaging over 98%. A trial with 19 students demonstrated a significant improvement in pronunciation, with an average pre-test score of 62.36 increasing to 83.84 in the post-test, supported by an N-Gain of 0.50 (medium effectiveness). Feedback from teachers and students indicated that the media was practical, visually appealing, and motivational. The findings suggest that Canva-based interactive PowerPoint media effectively addresses pronunciation challenges while enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes. This research highlights the transformative potential of integrating digital tools into education, offering practical solutions for language learning at the elementary level

Abstract

The aim of the study is to analyze the implementation of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s language games theory in the context of intercultural communication at Pondok Pesantren Manahilil Ulum DDI Kaballangan. This research was employed a qualitative approach with participatory observation and in-depth interviews. Data were collected from utterances of students from various ethnic backgrounds, such as Buginese, Mandarese, Makassarese, and Pattinjonese, with two informants from each ethnic groups, to understand how differences in word meanings affect communication dynamics. The findings show that the different language games in each ethnic group’s local language cause significant misunderstandings, as seen in words like “bosi,” “buto,” and “doko.” However, these misunderstandings were resolved through communication adaptations, such as the use of Indonesian as a bridging language. The originality of this study lies in the application of language games theory in a multi-ethnic boarding school setting, which has not been extensively explored in the context of education. This research provides new insights into the dynamics of intercultural communication in boarding school and the adaptive strategies used by students to maintain harmony. The study’s implications highlight the importance of cross-cultural awareness and the appropriate use of language to enhance communication effectiveness in multi-ethnic boarding school settings

Abstract

This study explores the request strategies of Javanese female English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners and how these reflect their politeness in communication. It examines the influence of Javanese cultural values and gender on their choice of strategies. Using Trosborg's (1994) request categorization and Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory, data were collected through role-play and semi-structured interviews. The analysis identifies that the learners mainly use conventionally indirect strategies, particularly hearer-oriented ones, with negative politeness being the most common approach. These strategies emphasize indirect phrasing and respect for the listener's autonomy. Javanese cultural values, such as humility (andhap asor) and empathy (tepa selira), significantly shape these choices. Gender norms also play a role, encouraging politeness and indirectness to reduce imposition and promote harmony. The findings suggest that integrating cultural awareness and contextually appropriate strategies into English teaching can help learners communicate effectively in formal or professional settings
