Abstract

Javanese politeness theory and language learning lack comprehensive understanding of politeness principles in ordering speech acts outside Java island. This study aims to fill this gap by analyzing politeness strategies used by Javanese parents in Kenagarian Sungai Duo when giving orders to their children. Employing a mixed-methods approach with qualitative and descriptive statistics, the research uncovered six politeness principles employed in parents' speech: generosity, humility, sympathy, wisdom, praise, and agreement. Notably, parents prioritize generosity (16.66%) and other strategies to soften their commands, creating a highly polite communication environment (97% compliance). These findings suggest a nuanced understanding of parent-child dynamics and Javanese politeness beyond the island's borders, opening doors for further investigation into regional variations and their impact on family communication.

Abstract

The mystical figure of Nyi Roro Kidul has been passed down from generation to generation and manifested in worship rituals, sacred places, dances, paintings and films. Even though the story of Nyi Roro Kidul contradicts modern religion, it is still an aspect of the Javanese belief system. This article discusses the role of the Nyi Roro Kidul myth as part of the Javanese belief system, which is represented in two Indonesian novels, Perjanjian dengan Maut by Harijadi S. Hartowardojo (1976) and Galau di Laut Selatan by Martha Hadimulyanto (1993). The data, narrations and characters' dialogues were obtained through reading and note-taking techniques and discussed using the library study method, namely descriptive analysis of intrinsic elements. The discussion results show that the myth of Nyi Roro Kidul influences the characters' religiosity and thus affects their decision-making when facing conflicts.

Abstract

Language politeness is the key to good communication, including in communication in student WhatsApp groups. However, violations of the principle of language politeness often occur among students, especially in WhatsApp course groups. This study aims to discuss violations of the principle of language politeness among students in Indonesian language course class groups. This study uses a qualitative method with research data in the form of WhatsApp message media. The results showed that there were four violations of the maxim of wisdom, one violation of the maxim of sympathy, five violations of the maxim of generosity, and one violation of the maxim of humility. These violations occur because students think that WhatsApp groups tend to be informal and pay less attention to language politeness. The results of this study are expected to increase students' awareness of the importance of language politeness in communication, especially in WhatsApp groups.

Abstract

This research aims to compare the text contained in the Palintangan Palindhon Pakedutan Primbon Manuscript (Add 12311) in the collection of the British Library, which is in Javanese language, with the Kutika Ugi' Sakke Rupa (PRI/15/MMK/KKT 1530) in the collection of the Mulawarman Museum, East Kalimantan, which is in Bugis language. Both manuscripts contain text containing information on the quality of the days of the month. Both texts have the characteristics of primbon, namely a Javanese literary genre that contains various knowledge. Even though the Bugis people do not know the word primbon, the closeness of the Kutika Ugi' Sakke Rupa text to the Primbon Palintangan Palindhon Pakedutan shows that there is a connection between the two cultures that has been going on for a long time. Before the term primbon was known by Javanese people, namely during the Kawi era, the cross-culture was one of the impacts of trade activities on the spice route. Through the spice route, the two cultures are connected. The similarities and differences found in the two texts reinforce that the relationship between Javanese and Bugis is not only diplomatic but can also be found through material culture. This connection also explains that the similarities between the two are a monogenesis phenomenon.

Abstract

The current issue in the translation process is the inappropriate choice of technique, which affects the accuracy and acceptability of the translation, as well as the need to identify slang expressions from the source language to the target language to ensure the style aligns with the target language's characteristics. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the techniques used to translate slang expressions from English (the source language) into Indonesian (the target language) using the theories of Butkuiviena and Petrulionē (2010), and Vinay and Darbelnet (1995) in the novel To All The Boys I've Loved Before, while also analyzing the linguistic style of the slang translation from English into Indonesian using Joos's theory (1967). The research method employed is qualitative, with document analysis for data collection. Meanwhile, the data analysis method uses thematic analysis. The results show that the most dominant technique used by translators for translating slang expressions is the literal technique. This finding suggests that the literal translation technique is generally capable of accommodating and sufficiently accurate in translating slang expressions in this novel, which features light and casual language use. Given that the novel narrates a simple teenage story, the dominant linguistic style in the translation of slang expressions is casual style. This finding reflects that the novel's style closely resembles the preferred linguistic style of young readers, who tend to be more relaxed, friendly, and open.

Abstract

Low comprehension of poetry texts among students is a significant educational challenge. It is characterized by difficulties in interpreting content and answering related questions. Monotonous teaching methods that fail to engage students or provide opportunities for deep exploration of poetic texts often cause this issue. If left unaddressed, this problem can hinder learning goals. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Reflect, Review (SQ4R) method, assisted by e-book media, on improving poetry text comprehension in fourth-grade students. A quantitative, pre-experimental approach using a One-Group Pretest-Posttest design was employed. The entire population of 30 fourth-grade students was sampled through saturated sampling. Data were collected through pre- and post-tests and analyzed using a paired-samples t-test. The results showed a significant improvement in poetry comprehension, supporting the alternative hypothesis. The N-Gain analysis revealed a moderate level of improvement. Despite the modest gain, these findings suggest that the SQ4R method, when combined with e-book media, can significantly enhance students' poetry comprehension skills. This approach offers a more engaging and effective learning strategy compared to traditional methods. Future research should investigate the long-term effects of this method and its applicability across different age groups and literary genres. These results provide valuable insights for educators looking to diversify their teaching methods in reading comprehension instruction.

Abstract

This study aimed to develop and evaluate Android-based crossword puzzle learning media for modern Indonesian literature using the ProProfs application. The research employed a Research and Development (R&D) methodology, collecting data through questionnaires and tests. Three types of questionnaires were distributed: material expert validation, media expert validation, and user validation. Additionally, user tests were conducted to assess comprehension of the literature content transformed into crossword puzzles. The combined validation results from material experts, media experts, and users yielded an overall average score of 3.77 out of 5, indicating that the developed learning media is appropriate for use in educational settings. This finding aligns with the results of four user trials, which demonstrated an average score of 80.6 out of 100, categorized as 'good' performance. These findings suggest that Android-based crossword puzzles can be an effective tool for engaging students with modern Indonesian literature. Future research could explore the long-term impact of this approach on literature comprehension and retention among various student populations.

Abstract

The Javanese language (BJ) is divided into three, namely Ngoko, Krama Madya, and Krama Inggil. BJ consists of 10 vowel sounds: [i, I, e, ɛ, a, ǝ, o, ɔ, U, u]. This study aims to determine the values of BJ vowel sounds based on FORMAN data analysis, comparing the voices of male speakers (PL) and female speakers (PP). Additionally, the study aims to identify the more dominant vowel sounds based on gender. The qualitative method was used to collect data on the vowel sounds of Ngoko Javanese (BJN) by analyzing voice recordings using the Praat application program. The quantitative method was employed to calculate the FORMAN F1, F2, and F3 values and determine the average difference in BJN vowel sounds. Data from the BJ dictionary, consisting of 10 words with vowel sounds at the beginning, were used for analysis. The results showed that in PL, the highest vowel values were: [u] at 3089Hz, [i] at 3918Hz, [ɔ] at 3535Hz, and [ɛ] at 3228Hz. The lowest vowel values were: [ɛ] at 277Hz, [U] at 431Hz, and [i] at 336Hz. In PP, the highest vowel values were: [ɛ] at 3021Hz, [i] at 3200Hz, [I] at 3083Hz, and [o] at 3367Hz. The lowest vowel values were: [e] at 391Hz, [I] at 525Hz, [ɛ] at 385Hz, and [i] at 455Hz. In conclusion, BJN consists of 10 vowel sounds, with the highest vowel sound being [ɔ] and the lowest vowel sound being [i] in PL. The comparison of vowel sounds at the beginning of words in PL and PP in BJN, based on the high and low sounds of the F1, F2, and F3 vowel sounds, indicates that PL is more dominant.
