Abstract

Purpose – Selective mutism in early childhood, although the incidence is not much, this condition can be a big challenge for professionals, teachers, and parents. This study aims to describe the psychological dynamics of early childhood with selective mutism.Design/methods/approach – This qualitative research uses a case study approach—data collection techniques with observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis uses data reduction, data presentation and conclusion drawing. Test the validity of the data by triangulation of sources. The participant of this study was a five-year-old girl diagnosed with selective mutism.Findings – Selective mutism is associated with anxiety problems and not a problem with cognitive abilities and language development. Lack of social stimulation in preschool years reinforces the symptoms of selective mutism. Parenting history in the form of a mother’s emotional condition, pattern attachments, parenting style and labels affect the appearance of symptoms of selective mutism.Research implications/limitations – This research has a narrow coverage area, so the study results are not intended to draw general conclusions or generalizations. However, the results of this study are expected to be used to understand similar cases.Practical implications – The study’s results are expected to help understand the psychology of children with selective mutism so that preventive and interventional ways can be formulated to reduce the symptoms.Originality/value – Further research is recommended to deepen further the quantitative validity of the relationship between children’s selective mutism and mothers with a history of baby blues syndrome.Paper type: Case study

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to describe and analyze the teacher's experience in implementing independent learning using the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematic) method made from loose parts, namely by creating a fun education so that students can be actively involved in increasing children's creativity, so children's development aspects can develop well.Design/methods/approach – This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The data analysis technique uses data collection, display, reducing data, and drawing conclusions. We are collecting data using observation, interviews, and documentation. The research subjects were teachers and children of group B of Nurul Iman Kindergarten.Findings – The study findings are in the form of loose parts media used by TK Nurul Iman's teacher in learning with the STEAM method, namely the selection of loose parts material using natural materials such as playing with sand, arranging leaves into necklaces, writing with water on the wall, arranging letters using pieces leaves above the ground. By using loose parts media, aspects of children's development will be achieved, including the artistic aspect: children can make pictures on the sand. Social-Emotional: children have behavior that reflects the attitude of self-confidence, caring, and empathy. Religious and moral values: children can name objects created by God. Language: the child can arrange the pieces of the leaf into a word. Cognitive: children can conceptualize numbers with sand and leaves. Physical motor: children can write using a stick and water on the school wall.Research implications/limitations – The study focuses on implementing independent learning using loose parts media with the STEAM method in students' learning process with natural materials, which have implications for children's development and independent learning.Practical implications – The study can be an additional reference for teachers in developing loose parts of teaching media to implement independent learning.Originality/value – This study provides an in-depth understanding of liberating early childhood by using STEAM loose part media.Paper type: Research paper

This method uses descriptive qualitative. The informants of this study were the principal and teacher of TK Harapan Bunda Parak Laweh Padang. Data collection techniques, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis techniques were carried out by collecting, reducing, presenting, and drawing conclusions. The data validation technique is a triangulation technique.Findings – The research results show that the teacher accustoms children to speaking good words by making the teacher a role model, and rules with children behaving at school, giving advice and punishment if children speak bad words. So, it can be concluded that the strategy used by the teacher is the strategy of implementing role models. The teacher is an example for children and takes approaches and methods to accustom children to speaking well, such as telling stories and conversing and implementing learning strategies with student center learning methods where learning is child-centered.Research implications/limitations – This research only focuses on teachers’ strategies to get children to speak good words at Harapan Bunda Parak Laweh Padang.Practical implications – This research contributes knowledge and provides teachers with examples of strategies for getting children to speak well.Originality/value – Research can be used to find out the strategies used by teachers to familiarize children with good speech.Paper type: Research paper

Abstract

Purpose – This study aims to identify character building for preschool-aged children in the era of disruption. This research produces percentages regarding applying the four character values: honesty, discipline, tolerance and independence.Design/methods/approach – This study uses a quantitative research method with a descriptive type. In this research, researchers conducted data mining using research instruments distributed online to students’ parents. The results of the analysis of the questionnaire that has been distributed to the parents of the students will later become quantitative data to determine the character development of students while at home.Findings – The results showed that parents’ formation of character values for pre-school-aged children obtained data as many as 365 (95.05%) parents always familiarize and apply the value of honesty. 263 (64.49%) parents always familiarize themselves and apply the value of discipline. 214 (55.73%) parents always get used to and apply the value of tolerance, and as many as 272 (70.83%) parents always get used to and apply the value of independence.Research implications/limitations – The research focus on the four character values is based on the results of previous research, which the researchers used as a reference because students in the early age category are still in the process of growth and development, so the internalization of the eighteen character pillars has not been fully formed.Practical implications – These four character values have different scores where the student’s parents prioritize instilling the values of honesty in educating their children in the family environment. The lowest score results indicate that tolerance is a character education value not applied to the early childhood category. The researcher hopes there will be a similar type of research to analyze the application of tolerance character values in the elementary and middle school age categories.Originality/value – The significance of this research that has been carried out is to see the role of parents in implementing character education values in the family environment. It is hoped that future research can link the four character values to correlational research.Paper type: Case study
