Abstract

This study aims to analyze the early reading ability of third-grade elementary school students through the use of serial picture media in Indonesian language learning. The focus of the study includes the ability to recognize picture sequences, read simple sentences, and compose stories based on a series of pictures. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The research subjects consisted of the third-grade homeroom teacher and third-grade students at SDN 28 Kelakik. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation to obtain an in-depth understanding of the learning process and outcomes. The results indicate that serial picture media help students understand picture sequences more systematically, improve accuracy and fluency in reading simple sentences, and support students’ ability to compose simple stories based on pictures. Overall, serial picture media contribute positively to improving the early reading ability of third-grade students.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the significant quality gap between elementary schools in Pontianak City, particularly between SDN 01 Teluk Batang, categorized as an underdeveloped school, and SD Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak, categorized as a more advanced school. This gap is evident in various indicators of learning achievement, accreditation, and school reputation, yet it has not been extensively studied comparatively in managerial and pedagogical aspects. The main problem of this research is how the differences in school management (POAC), learning patterns, and evaluation systems between the two schools contribute to the quality gap. This research employs a qualitative approach with a comparative study design, where data were collected through passive participatory observation, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis. The results show that SD Muhammadiyah 1 Pontianak significantly excels in all three aspects with an average score of 90.0, while SDN 01 Teluk Batang only achieves 42.3, with the largest gap found in the learning pattern aspect (52 points). The unique finding of this research is the revelation of systemic interconnections between management, learning, and evaluation that form a continuous improvement cycle in the advanced school, while the underdeveloped school lacks such mechanisms. This research recommends the need for simultaneous intervention in all three aspects and affirmative policies from the Education Office to address the quality gap among elementary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Creative Problem Solving (CPS) learning model on elementary students’ critical thinking skills. The research employed a quantitative method with a pre-experimental design using a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The sample consisted of 30 fourth-grade students selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was an essay test based on Bloom’s taxonomy levels C4 (analyzing), C5 (evaluating), and C6 (creating). Data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test and the Paired Sample t-Test for hypothesis testing. The results showed that the average pretest score was 65.67 and increased to 84.88 in the posttest. The hypothesis test result indicated a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, meaning that there is a significant effect of the Creative Problem Solving learning model on students’ critical thinking skills. The CPS model enhances student engagement through systematic problem-solving processes, encouraging students to think critically, analytically, and reflectively.

Abstract

Chemical literacy is an essential competency that supports students’ understanding of chemical concepts and their application in real-life contexts. However, numerous studies indicate that the level of scientific literacy among Indonesian students, including chemical literacy, remains relatively low. Stoichiometry is one of the chemistry topics that requires a high level of chemical literacy due to its abstract nature and its reliance on quantitative reasoning. This study aimed to analyze the level of chemical literacy of Grade XI science students on stoichiometry at SMA Negeri 12 Kendari. This study employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive research design. The research population consisted of 103 Grade XI science students, from which 51 students were selected as the sample using a simple random sampling technique. The research instrument was a 25-item two-tier diagnostic multiple-choice test designed to measure chemical literacy aspects, including knowledge, application, and nature of science. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques, including mean scores, standard deviation, and percentage analysis. The results showed that students’ chemical literacy levels were predominantly in the moderate category, with a mean score of 61.45. The percentage of students in the low, moderate, and high categories was 29.4%, 39.2%, and 31.4%, respectively. These findings indicate that students have acquired basic understanding of stoichiometric concepts but still encounter difficulties in applying these concepts to more complex contexts. Therefore, it is recommended that innovative and contextual learning models be implemented to enhance students’ chemical literacy.
