The language, be it verbal or non-verbal, has been the primary medium of human interactions to take place. However, there still seems to be a little attempt for a thorough investigations in understanding problematic issues that may emerge because of the language. Issues in Applied Linguistics & Language Teaching (IALTEACH) aims at bringing together scholars whose interests fall upon the areas of applied linguistics and language teaching to publish their scholarly articles in IALTEACH. As the term applied implies, this journal combines interdisciplinary discussions on language issues that would bridge not only systematic investigations of the language , but also the theories, research methods, and practices within the scope of applied linguistics and language teaching. Therefore, the contributions are welcome in the following areas (but not limited to) of study; current trends in ELT, language learning & acquisitions, teaching media &technology, linguistic aspects of language learning & teaching, English for specific purposes, and Englishes in Southeast Asia.

Abstract

The objective of this research was to find out the correlation between students’ metacognitive strategy and their self-efficacy in speaking skills at the third grade of language major of MAN Tanjungpinang. The subject of this research was all of the students of the third grade of language major of MAN Tanjungpinang. The object of the research is students in the third grade of language major of MAN Tanjungpinang. The population of this research was 197 students of the third grade in MAN Tanjungpinang with 19 of the students being used as samples of the research. To collect the data, the researcher used observation and questionnaires. To analyze the data the researcher used descriptive statistics with a Pearson Product Moment and tested of the significance of the correlation coefficient. The result indicated that the value of the correlation coefficient (r) is 0.425, with level of correlation is moderate because it is in the coefficient interval between 0.40 - 0.599, while the value of tcomputed is greater than the value ttable (1,935>1,734) and the significance value is 0,035, which is 0,035<0,05 (1-tailed). H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted. It means that there is a significant correlation between students’ metacognitive strategy and their self-efficacy in speaking at the third grade of language major of MAN Tanjungpinang at 0,05 level (1-tailed).

Abstract

Abstract In today's industrial sector, many companies are developing their markets both regionally and internationally. One of the ways they do this is to cooperate with regional and foreign companies. To make this happen, companies need documents using international languages or English. Apart from translating documents, currently document proofreading is also needed. This document proofreading aims to ensure that the document is good and correct to use or publish. This internship program is in cooperating with two partners there are PT. Indogaben Sukses Perkasa and UCLC UIB. Author assigned to translate legal documents for PT. Indogaben Sukses Perkasa and proofread academic articles for UCLC UIB. This program started on 08 February 2021 until 30 June 2021. This project done manually by author; it means that author did not use any computer assisted translation tool in translating the documents. The results of this project are five legal documents from PT. Indogaben Sukses Perkasa which is translated from Bahasa to English and five academic articles that already proofread by the author.

Abstract

This research is about the use of persuasive sentences in copywriting. The purpose of this research is to identify the use of persuasive sentences in copywriting. The data used in this study were obtained by taking several examples of marketing posters for a product from several sales sources. The results show that persuasive sentences are widely used as a copywriting technique. Keywords: persuasive sentences, copywriting, market poster.

Abstract

The purpose of this study aimed to examine the effectiveness of English comic webtoons as an instructional tool for improving reading comprehension abilities to traditional teaching methods. The study used a quasi-experimental design and a simple random sampling technique to select participants. The study included two classes: Class X-MIPA 2 was designated as the experimental group, and Class X-MIPA 1 was designated as the control group. The research involved 52 students in total. Pre- and post-tests were used to collect data, which was then statistically analyzed using the t-test procedure. The study's findings revealed a statistically significant difference in academic performance between the experimental and control groups. There was a significant improvement in the students' reading comprehension scores after the treatment was completed. The computed test statistic (t-test) was 6.44, which was greater than the critical value of 1.68. This study's findings led to the acceptance of the research hypothesis (Ha) and the rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho). The effectiveness of using English comic webtoons as an instructional medium for improving the reading comprehension skills of tenth-grade students at MAS Ulumuddin, specifically in relation to narrative texts, is highlighted in this study. This study provides important insights for teachers looking for visually appealing methods to improve reading comprehension in the classroom.The study employed a quasi-experimental design and utilized a simple random sampling technique for participant selection. reading comprehension in the classroom.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to discover what characteristics drive students to learn English and their English learning success in the participant at an English club. A questionnaire was used to collect data to assess the percentage of elements in English language acquisition based on current theories. A sample of 20 students was chosen at random to evaluate and measure the students' motivation and English learning achievement. In this study, a collection of 10 questionnaires was employed to examine the relationship between many factors. Data analysis uses descriptive percentage analysis for questionnaires, while for interviews and observations the data is reduced and presented. The research results show that students who take part in the extracurricular English Club feel more motivated to learn English.

Abstract

In recent years, many studies indicate that the use of technology plays an important role in the process EFL (English as Foreign Language) learning. It is also proven that the motivation factor influences learners’ learning processes. The aim of this study is to investigate if there is any relationship between the use of technology in Indonesian EFL university classes and the students’ motivation in learning English. To test this hypothesis, a questionnaire and students’ interview developed by Binnur (2011) were distributed among a group of 30 Indonesian EFL university students who were in EFL classes learning by internet, mobile phone and power point to be used on their English classes. Data gathered were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. The result shows that Indonesian EFL university students have a positive attitude towards the use of technology in their English classes.

Abstract

Anxiety is the most dominant of psychological problem that faced by students in learning speaking. This study focused on analysis of making a vlog to minimize public speaks anxiety among EFL students. This study answer the following question, “How does video blog minimize public speak anxiety among EFL students?” Descriptive qualitative method as simply observing a behavior was used in this study. Frist-semester students of Institut Bakti nusantara were the participants of this study which consist of 10 students, majoring in Information system. There were two ways for collecting data, namely: observations and inteview. They were assigned to make a video of speaking performance on a topic “Advertisement”. The result could be concluded that making video blog is useful to minimize public speak anxiety among EFL student. Besides that, a vlog is considered as one of useful stategy which can provide students motivation for being confidence in public speaking. Futhermore, creating a vlog can give enjoyable and attractive learning atmosphere and students will feel more comfortable, relaxed, and motivated to practice their speaking skill. Even though a vlog has been proven to reduce anxiety levels, there are several things that must be considered when using a vlog as a media for learning speaking. Lecturers are expected to be more creative and innovative in order to make students become more interested in speaking English. Lectures always know students’ speaking anxiety level and students’ condition in learning speaking due to not all of students have the same characteristics to be able to accept all types of media.

Abstract

Salah satu aspek penting dalam Bhasa Inggris adalah Reading. Dalam memahami sebuah teks pembaca harus mampu memahami setiap bagian dalam teks, oleh sebab itu untuk memahami sebuah bacaan bukanlah hal yang mudah untk dilakukan. Berdasarkan pengalaman peneliti ketika menjadi guru pengganti pada SMP Negeri 10 Takengon, ada banyak kesulitan yang di temukan oleh para peneliti pada siswa tentang reading comprehension. Oleh sebab itu dengan menggunakan strategy yang tepat dapat untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam reading comprehension. Dengan alasan ini, dalam penelitian ini untuk meningkatkan kemampuan reading comprehension siswa peneliti menerapkan Semantic Mapping Strategy. Dengan menggunakan strategy ini diharapkan akan membantu siswa dalam reading comprehension. Salah satu dari tujuan penelitian ini adalah Semantic Mapping strategy untuk meningkatkan kemampuan siswa dalam reading comprehension dalam teks narrative pada kelas delapan SMP Negeri 10 Takengon. Penelitian ini menggunakan Classroom Action Research (CAR). Objek penelitian ini adalah siswa kelas delapan SMP Negeri 10 Takengon. Objek penelitian ini yaitu siswa kelas VIII1 dengan jumlah 23 siswa. Data peneltian ini diperoleh menggunakan model penelitian Mc Taggart and Kemmis meliputi planning, acting, observing and reflecting.

Abstract

Adjustment to the Indonesian language is a popular issue for international students while studying abroad in Indonesia. This research aims to analyze the ability as well as displaying the point of view of international students in implementing Indonesian language in communication highlighting what are the confusion and shocks from many aspects that they experienced during adjustment of communicating in Indonesia. As how mankind socializes one another through communication, direct or indirect, language is the tool to support communication between two or more people. In this case, Indonesian language as a communication tool exists among many other languages and globally spread its wings not only as a conversation support between two or more people, but also as a language that is learned by people from various backgrounds through a mandatory program of Indonesian for foreign speakers (BIPA). To communicate, adjustment is highly needed, especially to speak Indonesian language as a foreign language.

Abstract

The study describes students' perceptions of the English teaching and learning process at ITB AAS Indonesia during the 2022/2023 academic year through descriptive qualitative research. The analysis reveals that English lecturers are responsible for delivering the syllabus and material for a semester of English learning, conveying the learning contract, and distributing books/modules. They also teach English using both offline and online methods, using institutional e-learning platforms like Zoom with Live YouTube. They provide learning materials weekly, discuss them with students, and provide summary/conclusion, assessment, reflection, feedback, and follow-up at the last meeting. In the ELT evaluation, lecturers provide English tasks, provide leeway for assignment collection, conduct mid-semester and final semester exams, offer opportunities for English follow-up exams, and explain the course value. These planning, implementation, and evaluation are crucial for improving the quality of educators, students, and educational institutions. In planning, it shows generally positive perception among students regarding the organization and facilitation of the English teaching and learning process at the beginning of the semester. In the implementation, it indicates a strong endorsement from students regarding various aspects of the English teaching and learning process at ITB AAS Indonesia. While in the evaluation, it indicates a positive perception among students regarding the organization and administration of assessments and tasks within the English teaching and learning process at ITB AAS Indonesia.
