Abstract

Since the advent of secularism in the middle-ages there exist a strong debate among Muslim scholars and thinkers on its compatibility with Islam. The proponents of secularism popularly known as secular Muslims upheld that Islam and secularism are two sides of the same coin because of their shared aspects while its opponents (the Islamists) uphold otherwise. This paper depends on convergence theory to argue that there are some similarities as well as differences between the two concepts. The study suitably adopted descriptive and comparative approaches of qualitative research to generate and analyses data. The study found that there are two types of secularism namely: the radical and moderate secularism. The radical secularism which is usually translated as “extremist” is characterized by hostile approaches to religion while the moderate secularism known as soft secularism acknowledges religious freedom, tolerance and pluralism which are all inherent in the Islamic world views. The major differences between the Islamic world views and that of the moderate secular views lie in the fact that Islam calls for humanity to embrace its faith (Da’awa) in spite its strong position on religious freedom and the Islamic concept of moderation (Wasatiyyah) which advocates upholding balance stance between two opposing extremes. On a final note the research recommends that Muslims should strongly uphold the Islamic teachings in their individual and societal lives alike.

Abstract

Religion and culture are two interconnected entities. However, there are some groups who claimed that Islam is against local culture and traditions. That arguments are significant to be reviewed and studied comprehensively. This research aims to review the interrelation between Islamic teachings and the culture of honoring asyhur al-hurum from the perspective of Clifford Geertz's anthropological theory. With a library research approach and qualitative method, this research results that the teachings in Islam appreciate and are accommodative of local traditions. Many pre-Islamic traditions have been adopted and then integrated into Islam, one of them is the culture of honoring asyhur al-hurum (Rajab, Dhulqa'dah, Dhulhijjah, and Muharram). There are several verses of the Qur'an that contain an appreciative attitude towards this culture, including QS al-Baqarah verses 194, 197, and 217; QS al-Maidah verses 2 and 97; QS al-Taubah verse 36. Some of the verses mentioned provide an understanding that Islam is a religion that strengthens respect for the culture of the glory of the haram months (asyhur al-hurum). The verse reflects the tahmil process as a form of dialectic between the Qur'an and culture. Based on the analysis using Clifford Geertz's theory of models for reality and models of reality, the teachings in Islam instruct Muslims to glorify the haram months by increasing worship, both ritual worship and social worship related to cultural practices that apply in a multicultural society. The interrelation between religious teachings about the haram months and local culture contributes to the formation of collective identity, both in religious and social contexts.

Abstract

This study discusses the agricultural transformation in Alamendah Village, Bandung Regency, spearheaded by Pesantren Al-Ittifaq. Through the integration of religious values, social innovation, and agricultural education, this pesantren has successfully driven community-based social and economic change. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study method to explore how local leadership, especially through the figure of Kiai Fuad, is able to change the mindset of the community from traditional agriculture to more modern strawberry cultivation. This transformation not only lifted local economic welfare, but also strengthened social solidarity through cooperative development and active community participation in collective decision-making. This research underscores the importance of social and symbolic capital in creating sustainable development based on local potential. The conclusion of this article suggests that the community-based development model implemented in Alamendah is capable of becoming an example of replication for other regions that seek to create holistic and inclusive welfare while maintaining cultural and religious values.

Abstract

This study aims to measure the social piety index and identify influential factors related to social piety among the residents of Bangka Barat Regency. The research employed a survey method and cluster technique (cluster random sampling) for data collection. The social piety index was determined based on three variables: individual worship activities (X1), knowledge about social piety (X2), and attitudes/behaviors reflecting social piety (X3). The findings reveal a high level of individual worship activities (X1: 65.22), a significant understanding of social piety (X2: 77.19), and favorable attitudes/behaviors reflecting social piety (X3: 66.31) within the community. Active participation in recitation and involvement in religious organizations emerged as dominant factors shaping individual piety. Engagement in good governance and participation in conservation/restoration were identified as key factors influencing knowledge about social piety. Respect for differences and involvement in good governance play pivotal roles in shaping attitudes/behaviors associated with social piety.

Abstract

This study examines the integration of biology learning with environmental conservation education in Islamic boarding school-based Islamic Senior High Schools (Madrasah Aliyah) as a response to the low affective and psychomotor involvement of students in biology learning, which has tended to be theoretical and fragmented. The purpose of this study was to explore the integrative practices implemented in Islamic boarding school-based Islamic Senior High Schools (Madrasah Aliyah) and to assess their effectiveness in shaping students' ecological awareness. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design, through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation techniques. The results showed that the madrasah had implemented the Natural Exploration Method (MJAS) which makes the surrounding environment a learning laboratory. Students were actively involved in activities such as tree planting, waste sorting, and the use of biogas reactors as a medium for learning bioremediation. These findings indicate that the integration of biology learning and environmental conservation simultaneously builds contextual knowledge, scientific skills, and ecological awareness in students. Based on this study, it is concluded that this practice reflects the ecopedagogy approach and the principles of sustainable education (Education for Sustainable Development), and strengthens the position of madrasas as transformative educational agents capable of producing generations with ecological insight within the framework of Islamic values.

Abstract

Seniority culture in educational settings reflects social hierarchies based on age, level, or experience differences. This study examines how conflict dynamics between senior and junior groups in a seniority-based educational environment affect students' social interactions and foster a safe, inclusive atmosphere. Using a literature review method, the research employs conflict theory to understand seniority culture dynamics, involving literature search, selection, systematic data organization, analysis of findings, and synthesis. The findings indicate that seniority culture can influence students' social interactions, often leading to negative behaviors such as bullying and discrimination. Family, school, and community environments significantly shape students' behavior related to seniority, with a lack of social control triggering negative behaviors. Recommendations include changing values, enhancing moral education, and increasing the role of teachers and school staff in cultivating a safe, inclusive environment. The research underscores the need for awareness of seniority culture's impact and implementing concrete measures to mitigate its negative effects. Implications emphasize value transformation, the crucial role of educators, and collaboration between family, school, and community to foster effective social control. This study offers a comprehensive understanding of seniority culture in education and highlights the importance of collective efforts to create safe and inclusive educational environments

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of waste management by the Hatim Berseri Waste Bank, the factors influencing it, and the impacts resulting from effective waste management, both on the environment and the economy. Population growth can lead to an increase in waste volume, making the role of waste banks as community-based waste management crucial. This study is based on field research using a qualitative method approach. Data were obtained by observing the waste bank being studied, namely the Hatim Berseri Waste Bank. Researchers conducted interviews with the managers of the Hatim Berseri Waste Bank and the surrounding community to gather the necessary information. In addition, researchers also collected documents related to waste bank management. Secondary data were obtained from research results, journals, or other relevant reference sources. From the results of the research that has been conducted, it can be concluded that the waste management activities by the Hatim Berseri Waste Bank have been running quite effectively. However, there are several aspects that can be further improved in waste management by the Hatim Berseri Waste Bank, namely related to the level of community participation, so that other aspects such as the level of waste volume reduction and the environmental and economic impacts received by the community can be more optimal.
