Abstract

This study aims to analyze the theoretical principles and practical realities of Arabic textbook development for Madrasah Aliyah published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs in 2020. Using a descriptive qualitative approach through literature review and content analysis, this study focuses on four key principles in Arabic textbook development, that is sociocultural, psychological, linguistic, and pedagogical. The results show that the textbook integrates Islamic values and local Indonesian contexts (sociocultural), presents materials progressively according to students’ development stages (psychological), applies modern fusha Arabic balanced with four language skills (linguistic), and aligns objectives, materials, and evaluations with the national curriculum (pedagogical). Overall, the textbook fulfills the theoretical framework of Arabic textbook design for non-Arab learners while still requiring improvement in communicative and evaluative components. These findings contribute to the development of more adaptive and contextual Arabic language teaching materials for Indonesian learners.

Abstract

This Research and Development (R&D) study aims to innovate interactive Arabic language exercises through the Wordwall platform to address the limitations and monotony of traditional instructional methods at Jam'iyatul Hujjaj Primary School. The study adopted the ADDIE instructional design model, encompassing five systematic phases: Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation. The research was conducted with a sample of 30 third-grade students, utilizing observation, interviews, questionnaires, and pre- and post-tests as primary data collection instruments. The results indicate that the developed exercises achieved high validity ratings (78%–80%) based on expert validation and demonstrated excellent practicality scores (90%–98%) among both students and the teacher. Furthermore, quantitative analysis confirmed the product's effectiveness in improving linguistic performance, as evidenced by an average N-Gain score of 0.83, which categorizes the intervention as "highly effective." These findings highlight the critical role of digital transformation in Arabic pedagogy to foster active engagement and bridge the gap between standardized curriculum content and modern learner needs. However, the study is limited by its small sample size and specific institutional context. Consequently, it is recommended that future research expand the experimental scope and explore the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to develop adaptive learning systems for young Arabic language learners.

Abstract

This study investigates the implementation of the sorogan strategy in mahārah al-qirā’ah (reading skills) instruction at Pondok Pesantren Al-Khoirot, Malang. The sorogan method fosters a rigorous learning environment where students demonstrate their reading proficiency directly before the Kiai. This research aims to describe the planning and execution of mahārah al-qirā’ah instruction through the sorogan strategy in the context of reading Turats (classical) books. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were gathered from teachers and students through observations and interviews. The analysis followed a systematic process of data collection, processing, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings demonstrate that this strategy significantly enhances students' in-depth comprehension and ability to read Turats books, particularly in grammatical analysis (Qawaid) and textual interpretation. This success is attributed to the dual support system: students' intensive preparation via the muthola’ah (independent study) system in peer groups and direct pedagogical guidance from the Kiai during the session. While previous research has evaluated the sorogan method using the CIPP model in different settings, this study emphasizes the procedural integration of independent and guided learning. These findings offer theoretical and practical implications for designing effective mahārah al-qirā’ah instruction within traditional Islamic educational frameworks.

Abstract

This study explores the use of Canale and Swain’s communicative competence framework in teaching Arabic through contextual activities in the Merdeka Curriculum. The issue is relevant because schools are expected to help students communicate more naturally, not only master grammar. The research aimed to see how teaching practices encourage the development of grammatical, discourse, sociolinguistic, and strategic abilities. A qualitative descriptive approach was applied by gathering information through interviews, classroom observations, and a review of teaching documents. The data were examined through a gradual process of sorting, organizing, and interpreting. The results show that contextual tasks and project-based work give students more room to improve their grammatical and discourse skills, which also supports their confidence and fluency. In contrast, sociolinguistic and strategic skills have not grown as strongly, mainly because authentic materials are scarce, lesson time is limited, and teachers need more support in designing communicative activities. The study underscores the continued relevance of communicative competence in Arabic learning and points to the importance of providing richer learning media, performance-based assessments, and sustainable teacher development. Future studies may look into digital and authentic resources to strengthen all components of communicative competence.

Abstract

Mastery of mahārah kalām (speaking skills) is a primary objective in Arabic pedagogy, yet students frequently encounter challenges such as limited vocabulary, psychological barriers, and insufficient interactive practice. In many Indonesian higher education settings, speaking activities are often eclipsed by grammar-centric instruction, resulting in a discrepancy between curricular objectives and oral proficiency. This study investigates the integration of ChatGPT as an AI-driven conversational tool to bridge this gap at Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Sunan Giri (UNUGIRI). Employing a qualitative exploratory design, the research engaged twenty intermediate-level students from the Arabic Language and Literature Program. Data were synthesized through in-depth interviews, standardized speaking rubrics, and longitudinal learning protocols. The findings demonstrate that ChatGPT significantly enhances fluency, grammatical precision, and communicative confidence by providing a responsive, low-anxiety environment for iterative practice. Furthermore, the AI's immediate feedback serves as a scaffold for independent oral development. This research addresses a critical gap regarding AI-mediated Arabic instruction in the Indonesian context. The implications suggest that structured, lecturer-guided integration of ChatGPT can effectively mitigate affective filters and expand interactive opportunities in environments where authentic Arabic immersion is limited.

Abstract

Nahwu (Arabic grammar) is a foundational component of the Islamic boarding school curriculum, serving as a critical framework for structural linguistic analysis and the development of reading proficiency (mahārah al-qirāʾah). This study investigates the correlation between grammatical comprehension and reading ability at the Pondok Pesantren Salafiyah Islamiyah (Islamic Boarding School) in Padang Bujur. Employing a quantitative correlational design, the research sampled eighth-grade students using grammar tests and performance-based assessments of turāts books. Data were analyzed via the Pearson Product-Moment correlation test. he findings demonstrate a significant positive correlation (0.845 > 0.444), leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (H₀). These results conclude that robust mastery of nahwu is a significant predictor of a student's ability to decipher classical Arabic texts. Theoretically, this reinforces the need for integrated instruction that balances grammar with textual application. Practically, it suggests that strengthening grammatical foundations is essential for classical literacy. However, this study is limited by its single-institution focus and narrow demographic, which may affect generalizability. Future research should expand the sample size across multiple institutions and employ mixed-methods approaches to explore how diverse instructional strategies and qualitative factors, such as student motivation, influence the synergy between grammatical mastery and reading proficiency.

Abstract

This study examines the design process in developing Digital Flipbook-based learning media for teaching maharah al-kitabah to tenth-grade students of Madrasah Aliyah. The need for this development arises from the limited availability of interactive and structured writing materials that align with contemporary digital learning environments. Using the ADDIE development model, this research focuses specifically on the Design stage as the conceptual foundation for producing effective learning media. The stage involves formulating learning objectives, selecting appropriate content for the theme “Family and Home,” and organizing the material into a coherent instructional structure. The resulting prototype consists of an introductory section, core learning materials, writing exercises, and a Student Worksheet integrated to support guided practice. The findings indicate that a systematically designed prototype can provide a clear framework for subsequent development and has the potential to enhance student engagement in writing activities. This design serves as the basis for the next Development stage, where the prototype will be transformed into a fully functional Digital Flipbook.
