Abstract

Remote environments are far from urban areas, which have many essential services. The absence of important goods and services in remote areas is described as equivalent to the typically poor working and living conditions. Isolation implies that teachers have limited interaction with other teachers who can share resources and teaching practices to improve their performance. This research aims to fill the gap in understanding teachers' adaptability by exploring cultural intelligence as a moderator of the factors influencing their performance in remote areas. The research employed a quantitative approach using path analysis. Participants in the study are high school teachers in West Seram. Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and interviews. There were indications of positive teacher responses, with an average score of 4.42. The results show that self-efficacy and work discipline positively affect cultural intelligence but do not significantly affect overall teacher performance. Cultural intelligence considerably impacts teachers' self-efficacy in remote areas, making it valuable to study and continue developing their abilities and integrating with the surrounding environment.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of the project-based learning (PjBL) model compared to the cooperative learning (CL) model in improving the critical thinking skills and chemistry self-efficacy of class 10 students simultaneously and consecutively. This quasi-experimental study with a post-test-only control group design was conducted at Public Senior High School in Yogyakarta. The research sample consisted of 65 students from an experimental group of class 10 A 4, totaling 33 students, and a control group of class 10 A 1, totaling 32 students, obtained through cluster random sampling techniques. The instruments used were critical thinking ability tests and self-confidence questionnaires. Before being used, the instruments were tested for content and empirical validity, and normality tests and multivariate outlier tests were carried out, followed by unidimensional assumption tests, parameter invariance, and local independence. The experimental group was taught using the PjBL model, while the control group was taught using the CL model. Critical Thinking Skill Fest (CTST) and Chemistry Self-Efficacy Scale (CSES) were applied as post-tests only to students in both groups. One-way multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) and post hoc test between subjects (Tukey Test) showed that applying the PjBL model was significantly better than applying the CL model on students' critical thinking skills and chemistry self-efficacy simultaneously and individually. The effectiveness of the PjBL model on students' critical thinking skills and chemistry self-efficacy simultaneously and individually is in the moderate category compared to the CL model. This research provides actionable insights into the advantages of implementing PjBL to improve critical thinking and self-efficacy among students. This research can serve as a reference for future research exploring the effectiveness of PjBl learning models in other subjects or educational levels.

Abstract

The manifestation of the technological age is that humans use technology, so education must prepare professional teachers who understand technology. Technology, content, and pedagogic-based learning occurred during COVID-19, known as technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK). TPACK research, so far as expertise using questionnaires, rarely studied TPACK designed by teachers. This quantitative study aims to determine the ability of TPACK in lesson plans (LP) of teacher professional education (TPE) students at UIN Sunan Ampel and its effect on HOTS. Data was collected by scoring LP based on TPACK and HOTS instruments. Data on students' ability to design lesson plans were analyzed using SEM path analysis with AMOS application to measure the influence of the TPACK component (TK, CK, PK, TPK, TCK, PCK) for TPACK and HOTS. The results showed that TPACK components ((pedagogic ability (PK) and technology-based pedagogic ability (TPK)) indirectly affect TPACK. Technology-based content capability (CTK) and TPK directly affect TPACK. The TPACK component involves HOTS in a negative direction except for content capability (CT), which affects HOTS positively.

Abstract

This research aims to discover the causes of interference among students at Swadhipa 2 Natar Vocational School and to prove the initial hypothesis that some students at Swadhipa 2 Natar Vocational School often experience interference phenomena in communicating. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection techniques through observation and interviews. The observations carried out were by direct observation of students who were indicated to frequently mix their first language with their second language both in class and outside of class. The results of this research show that students who often mix elements of their mother tongue in their speech are students who come from one area, namely Pejambon Village. The main factor in interference is the habit at home and socializing in the environment of using the mother tongue dominantly so that mastery of the second language is less mastered.

Abstract

Indonesian Islamic universities have conducted little research on English as a medium of instruction (EMI) for Islamic education students. Thus, this study explored EMI pedagogy for Islamic education. This study also examined student motivation and learning obstacles. Five lecturers and 128 students in three classrooms from different Islamic Education Department year levels at a State Islamic University in Indonesia have been investigated using qualitative observation and semi-structured interviews. The Transitional Bilingual Observation Protocol (TBOP) was used for observation results and thematic analysis for interview outcomes. Lecturers spent more time on lecturing, small group discussions, and presentations. The 2nd-semester lecturers employed translanguaging strategies for communication, while the others used the primary language and English with some mistakes. Students' desire to enhance their English was why they joined a bilingual program. Most students are excited to join EMI courses, but many struggle to communicate in English during class owing to concerns about making mistakes and speaking insecurely. Additionally, lecturers' English communication skills are limited during English education. This research shows that the institution should improve professors' communicative skills and students' language skills rather than only marketing multilingual classes.

Abstract

Academic boredom can adversely affect student motivation and performance, necessitating an exploration of its psychological foundations. This meta-analysis delves into the interplay between self-efficacy and academic boredom, underscoring the significance of mediators and moderators in this dynamic. A systematic review across various databases, including ScienceDirect, Web of Science, SCOPUS, ProQuest, Emerald Insight, and Springer Link, identified 17 relevant studies, encompassing 8631 participants. The quality of these studies was scrutinized using the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist. The meta-analysis, which utilized a random-effects model, found a noteworthy negative correlation between self-efficacy and academic boredom (r = -0.34, p 0.05). The analysis revealed high heterogeneity (I² = 91.49%), indicating significant differences among the studies. Additional findings pointed to social interaction and task performance as essential mediators, while factors such as the learning environment and genetics, notably MAOA, served as moderators. This research suggests that self-efficacy can act as a buffer against academic boredom, highlighting the importance of interventions that enhance self-efficacy and promote engaging learning environments. This study contributes to formulating effective strategies to combat academic boredom and improve student educational outcomes by integrating cognitive, emotional, and contextual factors.
