Abstract

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas. Exposure to high and continuous concentrations of carbon monoxide gas can cause an increase in blood carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) levels, health problems and can even cause death. Motorcyclists are people who are often exposed to carbon monoxide continuously. The aim of this study was to determine carboxyhemoglobin levels in MH Thamrin University students who ride motorbikes. The qualitative research method uses the Conway cell diffusion method and quantitative uses a UV-VIS spectrophotometer to determine COHb levels in the blood. The sample used in this research was 30 students at MH Thamrin University, obtained using a quota sampling technique with specified criteria. The results of the Conway diffusion cell method test showed that there was no color change in the blood sample, while the UV-VIS spectrophotometer test results showed that the COHb level in the blood examined was no more than 3.5%. In conclusion, all samples examined still had levels below the normal threshold of PERMENKES RI No. 70 of 2016, namely no more than 3.5%. Abstract

Tofu is a food source of protein that is widely consumed by the public. The high vegetable protein content in tofu is considered to be able to replace animal protein. According to the Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM), formalin is currently widely misused as a preservative in food products such as tofu. The Indonesian government has also banned the use of formaldehyde as a food preservative since 1982. Examination of the presence of formaldehyde in white tofu sold in five markets in the East Jakarta area was carried out qualitative tests using chromatopathic acid reagent and quantitative tests to determine levels. The research sample consisted of 18 samples from five markets in the East Jakarta area. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that of the 18 white tofu samples, 11 were positive and 7 were negative for containing formalin. Qualitative test results showed that 4 samples from the Cibubur market were 100% positive (5.85 ppm), 3 samples from the Obor market were 100% positive (5.62 ppm), 3 samples from the Kramat Jati main market were 100% positive (25.07 ppm), 4 samples from the Ciracas market were 25% positive (0.44ppm). The long-term goal is not to use formalin as a preservative in tofu. Special targets provide information to the public about the dangers of formaldehyde used as a preservative. The research method uses a direct research design during the period May–June 2023. The target output is published in a nationally accredited journal. Abstract

Amoxicillin is a beta-lactam antibiotic compound and has the chemical name alpha-amino-hydroxylbenzyl-penicillin. This drug was initially developed to have an advantage over ampicillin: it can be better absorbed in the digestive tract. The chemical contents of mangosteen rind (KBM) are xanthone, mangostin, garcinone, flavonoids and tannins. In addition, mangostenol, mangostenone A, mangostenone B, trapezifolixanton, tovofilin B, alpha mangostin, beta mangostin, garsinone B, mangostinone, epicatechin, and mangostanol. Mangosteen (Garcinia Mangostana L.) has many pharmacological properties; KBM also has antimicroorganism properties. It is estimated that alpha mangostin and/or KBM extract works in a similar way to amoxicillin, namely stopping the formation of bacterial cell walls. Alpha mangostin (flavonoid) or KBM extract (clavulanic acid) have similar groups or active substances. The aim of this research is to prove the antibacterial mechanism of action of the combination of KBM (Garcinia mangostana L) extract with amoxicillin on the growth of MRSA bacterial cells. Conclusion: The MIC of commercial GML extract, amoxicillin against MRSA is 137.50 µg/mL and 250.00 µg/mL respectively. The checkerboard test showed synergistic activity of commercial GML (34.38 µg/mL) plus amoxicillin (62.50 µg/mL) against Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) or Staphylococcus aureus ATCC BAA-3. The FIC index of amoxicillin plus GML against MRSA strains was 0.50. The synergistic activity of this combination was confirmed by a 2 log10 CFU/mL reduction of these treated cells compared with amoxicillin treatment alone. Conclusion that the combination of commercial mangosteen peel extract and amoxicillin is able to inhibit the growth of Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Abstract

Indonesia is a tropical country with high humidity conditions which can create a good atmosphere for fungal growth. Therefore, fungal infections found in Indonesia are quite diverse, one of which is tinea capitis, an infection caused by dermatophyte fungi on the scalp and hair follicles. The most common causative agents are Tricophyton and Microsporum. Tinea capitis attacks pre-puberty children more often, this is thought to be because the sebaceous glands at pre-puberty are not yet perfect. Laboratory diagnosis of tinea capitis can be carried out using several methods, including microscopic examination with KOH as an initial screening test, fungal culture which is the gold standard, trichoscopy, and the use of a Wood's lamp. This research uses secondary data from a literature study conducted in previous research journals. Based on a review of research results from five related journals, 3 show that the fungal species Microsporum canis most often causes tinea capitis infections in children. Tinea capitis is more common in pre-pubertal children and males. Boys are more susceptible to tinea capitis infection than girls. From the results of this study, it can be concluded that Microsporum canis is the most dominant fungus that infects tinea capitis in pre-puberty children, especially boys. The most commonly used examination methods for tinea capitis are microscopic examination with KOH and fungal culture. Pre-puberty children are advised to always maintain personal hygiene, especially the scalp and hair.   Keywords: Children, Microsporum canis, Tinea capitis
