Abstract

Scrub is a traditional cosmetic preparation that has been prescribed for generations and is used to remove dead skin cells, dirt, and open pores so that air exchange is free and the skin becomes brighter and whiter. Previous research reported that Gayo Arabica coffee grounds discarded as waste contain antibacterial and antioxidant compounds. Purple sweet potatoes are reported to contain natural antioxidants because they contain anthocyanins and beta-carotene, apart from that, ginger rhizomes are reported to be able to inhibit the growth of bacteria that cause body odor on human skin. Therefore, these three ingredients have the potential to be used as ingredients for making natural powder scrubs. This research aimed to determine the effect of the proportion of Gayo Arabica coffee grounds, purple sweet potato, and ginger rhizome on the finished product of powdered scrub preparations as seen from the stability of their physical quality. The research method used was experimental in the laboratory with a Completely Randomized Design (CRD). The powder scrub formulation is made in 3 formulas (F1, F2, and F3) by varying the ratio of the amount of Gayo Arabica coffee grounds, purple sweet potato, and ginger rhizome respectively, namely F1 (1:3:1), F2 (2:2: 1) and F3 (3:1:1). The weight of each formula is 100 g. The physical quality stability test of the powder scrub preparation was carried out on the 1st, 7th, and 14th days including organoleptics, water content, homogeneity, pH, drying time, and adhesion. The test results showed that during 2 weeks of storage, the body scrub preparations that were made had met the requirements for good physical quality. In the organoleptic test, the color, shape, and odor of the preparation did not change, the preparation was homogeneous, the pH was stable at 6.2, and the water content was stable at below 10% where the F3 formula showed the lowest water content. The results of the drying time test meet the requirements, namely a minimum of 15 minutes and the adhesion test meets the requirements, namely greater than 1 second.

Abstract

Physical, biological, and chemical parameters form the environmental health quality standards for water media used for sanitary hygiene needs. These parameters must be checked periodically by the laws and regulations contained in the Minister of Health Regulation Number 32 of 2017. One of these requirements is the MPN limit, which is a maximum total Coliform count of 50 colonies per 100 milliliters and requires the absence of Escherichia coli. This study was to ascertain whether PDAM water, borehole, and dug well water in the Cinta Rakyat Village area of Percut Sei Tuan Deli Serdang were contaminated by Escherichia coli and the MPN Coliform index. A 3:3:3 tube series consisting of a prediction test using Lactose Broth (LB) media, a confirmation test using Brilliant Green Lactose Broth (BGLB) media, and a complementary test using Eosin media was used to conduct a microbiological contamination test using the Most Probable Number (MPN) Coliform method. Gram stain with methylene blue agar (EMBA). Six water samples from dug wells, six from boreholes, and one PDAM water sample from the homeowner's residence were used for testing. The samples were randomly selected. The findings showed that two well water samples - ASGD 1 with 75 colonies/100 mL and ASGD 6 with 75 colonies/100 mL - exceeded the total Coliform limit. Six samples taken from dug wells were positive for fecal coliform. The colony count for ASGD 1 was 15/100 mL, ASGD 2 was 7/100 mL, ASGD 3 was 7/100 mL, ASGD 4 was 15/100 mL, ASGD 5 was 4/100 mL, and ASGD 6 was 20/100 mL. Two samples from boreholes were positive for fecal coliform. There were 4 colonies/100 mL for ASBD 2 and 7 colonies/100 mL for ASBD 4. PDAM water samples did not contain non-fecal coliforms and fecal coliforms.

Abstract

As chempedak fruit is only used fresh in the community, it is easily affected by mechanical, chemical, and microbiological factors and decays quickly. Therefore, fruit processing becomes very important to extend the shelf life of the fruit. Making juices, syrups, and juice products with a long shelf life is one of the selected ways of fruit utilization. The preparation of cempedak fruit juice as an antioxidant is the objective of this study. This is a summary of the article to help the reader quickly ascertain the purpose of the study according to the research needs. Fruit juice is a drinkable liquid obtained by squeezing or filtering the pulp. Cempedak juice drink formulas were tested for antioxidant activity in water, sugar, and CMC as part of the formula optimization process using SLD (simple lattice design) and respondent polling. Seven cempedak juice drink formulas with concentrations of 80 µg/mL, 60 µg/mL, 40 µg/mL, and 20 µg/mL were shown to have antioxidant capacity based on the results. The IC50 readings of the seven cempedak juice drink formulas are as follows: 7.948 µg/mL, 2.048 µg/mL, 3.085 µg/mL, 0.435 µg/mL, 11.057 µg/mL, 3.388 µg/mL, and 2.726 µg/mL, all of which were considered very strong. The audience found high popularity in the optimal formula made with a mixture of water, sugar, and CMC addition in the hedonic test, which measured responses to taste, aroma, and color. The highest pH of 4 was achieved in the pH 7 test of the Cempedak juice drink recipe. The homogeneity and cycling test results showed that the beverage formulation could be integrated into the drink.
