Abstract

Background: Amid rising sedentary behaviors and non-communicable diseases among adolescents globally, physical activity levels continue to decline—exacerbated by lifestyle shifts driven by globalization. While social support is often considered a key enabler of behavior change, limited empirical evidence clarifies its actual influence on adolescent physical activity, particularly in diverse sociocultural settings like Indonesia. This study addresses that gap. Research Objectives: This study aimed to examine the relationship between perceived social support and physical activity among adolescents in two different school settings. Methods: A correlational quantitative design with convenience sampling was employed, involving 1.046 adolescents aged 12–18 years from two schools with differing neighborhood contexts. Social support was assessed using the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS), and physical activity levels were measured using the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ). Data were analyzed using Spearman rank correlation via SPSS. Finding/Results: The results of data analysis using the Spearman rank test showed no significant relationship between physical activity and all components of social support (family, friends, and others) p> 0.05 (p=0.222, r=-0.038 for family; p=0.143, r=0.045 for friends; p=0.717, r=0.011 for significant others; p=0.779, r=0.009 for overall social support). Conclusion: These results indicate that social support is not the main factor influencing physical activity participation in adolescents. This study showed no significant relationship between the two variables. Other factors such as physical literacy, intrinsic motivation, school environment, and health conditions may have a more dominant role. Future studies are expected to explore these factors through longitudinal and experimental approaches.

Abstract

Background: Physical education in elementary school plays an important role in building physical literacy, increasing physical activity, and motivating students to achieve optimal learning outcomes. However, the relationship between these factors has not yet been studied holistically, so a more in-depth study in elementary schools is needed. Methods: This type of research is correlational research using a quantitative approach. The sample of this study was elementary school students in grades IV, V, and VI. The sample is 270 students. This study used purposive sampling for 8-12 years. Sampling in this study used tests and questionnaires for tests conducted on aspects of physical literacy, IPAQ (International Physical Activity Questionnaire), motivation, and observation of student learning outcomes. Data analysis using the SPSS version 25.0 data processing application program with normality, linearity, and correlation tests. Finding/Results: Physical literacy, physical activity and motivation data and learning outcomes are normal. The same thing also happened in the linearity test on the four aspects. Physical literacy to learning outcomes is positively correlated.  0.000 < 0.05. Physical activity to learning outcomes is positively correlated.  0.007 < 0.05. Motivation to learning outcomes is positively correlated.  0.000 < 0.05. Future research can focus on developing and testing intervention programmes that integrate these three variables to improve student learning outcomes holistically. In addition, it is important to conduct studies that explore causal relationships through experimental designs, as well as consider differences in influence across educational levels, from primary to tertiary. Conclusion: Physical literacy, physical activity, and motivation are specific to the learning outcomes of physical education. Understanding and paying attention to the relationship between physical literacy, physical activity, and motivation can help educators design more effective and enjoyable learning experiences in physical education, improving student learning outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Research on pedagogical models in physical education has increased rapidly in the past two decades, with the Sport Education Model (SEM) being the most dominant approach. However, systematic mapping for SEM implementation in Indonesia is limited. Research Objectives: This study aims to critically examine the application of SEM in Indonesia to provide a more comprehensive and up-to-date picture. Methods: The articles used for analysis were initially sourced from the Scopus, Web of Science, and Sinta databases. We conducted the search according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Review studies meeting the following inclusion criteria: (1) Peer-reviewed journal articles published and written in Indonesian or English between 2015 and 2024, (2) Included participants from elementary, middle and high schools and colleges, (3) Conducted in the physical education context, and (4) Intervention studies implementing one, several or combined pedagogical models. Exclusion criteria were: (1) Not scientific review studies and (2) Not about SEM implementation. After the exclusion criteria, only 17 articles were categorised, all published between 2015 and 2024. Findings/Results: A total of 17 articles involving 1,184 students were analysed. Interventions lasted between 8 and 16 meetings per semester, with the content dominated by invasion games (football, handball, basketball) and net games (badminton, volleyball). The research design was largely experimental, although not all used a control group. Variables tested included motivation, leadership, game play, tactical awareness, and sport orientation. Conclusions: SEM was found to be effective in enhancing student learning across multiple domains (cognitive, social, physical, and affective). However, we identified weaknesses in the lack of exploration of individualised sports, limitations in methodological design, and narrow coverage of variables. This study emphasises the need for diverse approaches and further exploration in local contexts.

Abstract

Background: Pressure in the school environment, academic demands, and high social expectations often increase the vulnerability of children and adolescents to psychosocial problems. Bad interactions, such as bullying or social isolation, can contribute to their mental state and hinder their social engagement. Research Objectives: The aim is to determine the difference in the influence of a deliberately structured psychosocial learning model and a deliberately structured progressive learning model through traditional games on psychosocial development. Methods: This research used a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test-post-only control group design with a model of more than one experimental group and sample selection using a purposive sampling technique. The sample of this study was 60 fifth-grade students from a public elementary school. The instrument in this research was a questionnaire developed by students at the Wesleyan University Graduate School, namely the Class 7 Students' Psychosocial Adjustment Needs Questionnaire, with data analysis techniques using the t-test. Findings/Results: Psychosocial learning models that are deliberately structured progressively through traditional games can influence psychosocial development, as well as psychosocial learning models that are deliberately structured can influence psychosocial development. Conclusion: There is a significant difference between the deliberately structured psychosocial learning model and the progressive version in terms of elementary students’ psychosocial development. The progressive model gives continuous stimulation and better support for psychosocial formation because it builds on what has already been learnt. Teachers are encouraged to use more collaborative, contextual approaches to enhance students' social-emotional engagement. Future research should explore different regions or cultures and incorporate mixed methods for a deeper understanding of student experiences

Abstract

Background: Innovation in physical education (PE) plays a key role in enhancing students’ cognitive, affective, and psychomotor development. However, there is limited comprehensive mapping that captures global research trends, influential contributors, and thematic evolution related to learning innovation in PE over the past decade. Objectives: The objective of this study is to analyse publication trends, leading sources, influential authors and affiliations, collaboration networks, and thematic keyword patterns in global research on learning innovation in physical education from 2013–2022. Methods: A bibliometric analysis was conducted using Scopus-indexed journal articles (n = 867). Data were processed through VOSviewer (v1.6.19) and Publish or Perish to examine publication growth, prolific authors, affiliations, countries, journals, and keyword co-occurrence networks. Finding/Results: Publications showed a steady increase, peaking in 2022 (179 documents). Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy emerged as the most productive journal, while Universidad de Oviedo and China were the leading institutional and national contributors. Keyword clustering revealed five dominant themes: models-based practice, learning motivation, health-oriented PE, teacher professional development, and curriculum design. Conclusion: This study maps the global landscape of learning innovation in PE and highlights the growing shift toward learner-centred, theory-driven, and technology-enhanced pedagogical models. Future research should expand cross-regional collaboration, integrate multi-database analyses, and explore thematic evolution to capture dynamic shifts in PE innovation.

Abstract

Background: By integrating interesting and interactive visualisations, digital comics are expected to help students to better understand the concept of athletic techniques and increase their interest in participating in lessons. This approach provides a solution to the challenges in learning basic athletics, which are often considered boring and difficult to understand by students. Research Objective: This research aims to develop digital comics as a learning tool in physical education to improve students’ understanding and basic athletic skills. Through interactive visual media, it is hoped that students will be more motivated and better understand the concepts. Method: This research uses the ADDIE method, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation.  The respondents of this study are class IV students at MI Plus Al-Fatimah Bojonegoro, totalling 42 students, consisting of 18 boys and 24 girls. The digital athletic comic was validated by 3 experts consisting of 1 media expert, 1 content expert, and 1 athletic practitioner. The results obtained were then analysed using the content validity index and content validity ratio. Finding/Result: The validation results by 3 experts that have been analysed show that the content validity index obtained an average score of 4.45, and the content validity ratio analysis showed an average score of 4.47. This shows that the digital comic model developed is very appropriate and relevant and meets the quality standards needed to increase student understanding and motivation in learning basic athletics. Conclusion: Digital comics have been shown to be effective as a learning tool to increase students' understanding, participation and motivation in basic athletics. For future research, it is recommended that the application of digital comics be extended to other subjects by involving larger groups. In addition, further research could examine the long-term impact of using digital comics on students’ academic achievement and motor skills.

Abstract

Background: The application of learning models in physical education (PE) had increased significantly, but there was limited research that investigated the comparison of two different learning models in improving students’ responsibility attitudes and learning motivation at the university level. Research Objectives: This study aims to investigate the effects of problem-based learning (PBL) and teaching personal social responsibility (TPSR) models towards the improvement of students' responsibility attitudes and learning motivation. Methods: This study applied a true experiment method with a pretest-posttest control group design. There were 30 students who participated at the university level who were allocated into PBL [male: n = 10; female: n = 5] and TPSR (male: n = 10; female: n = 5). The PBL and TPSR programmes were implemented for 12 weeks. The responsibility attitudes and learning motivation were measured in the pre- and post-test. Finding/Results: The findings in this study indicated that the PBL and TPSR models had a significant positive effect on improving responsibility attitude and learning motivation. However, a higher increase was found in the TPSR group compared to PBL. Conclusion: Thus, both learning models, PBL and TPSR, can be used as a solution to improve the responsibility attitudes and motivation among students during physical education learning.

Abstract

Background: Physical Education (PE) teachers often face challenges such as lack of mastery of underarm passing techniques, low self-confidence, and students’ motivation in volleyball games. By using Cooperative Learning (CL) type Team Games Tournament (TGT), we can overcome existing challenges. This study complements existing research by looking at the effect of TGT on passing and motivation, as well as self-confidence that has never been discussed at all in junior high school students and presents a CL fidelity model of TGT type that has never been discussed at all. Research Objectives: The study aims to examine the effect of the Team Games Tournament (TGT) type cooperative learning model on junior high school students’ lower passing ability, confidence, and motivation in volleyball. Methods: This study used a one-group pretest-posttest experimental design to evaluate changes in 20 students selected by purposive sampling. The research instrument used a volleyball underhand passing skill test, a self-confidence questionnaire for junior high school students in PE learning on volleyball underhand passing material, and a motivation questionnaire for junior high school students in PE learning. The data analysis technique used statistical descriptions, paired sample t-tests, and one-way ANOVA. Finding/Results: The findings and results of this study state that the fidelity model of TGT is at a very good level in implementation and planning. TGT has an influence on underhand passing, self-confidence, and learning motivation of junior high school students with results on underhand passing being better than self-confidence, and motivation. Conclusion: This study concludes that there is an influence of TGT on volleyball underhand passing, self-confidence, and motivation in junior high school students. Further research to update the research instruments used and pay attention to the fidelity model for the use of TGT, updating research instruments, and comparison classes to make them more generalisable.

Abstract

Background: The return to face-to-face physical education (PE) classes after prolonged online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic has exposed significant issues, including reduced physical competence, student disengagement, and weakened social interaction. While many studies have focused on instructional strategies during online learning, limited research has explored how students' attitudes and motivation affect their re-engagement in PE during the post-pandemic transition. Research Objectives: This study aims to examine the influence of student attitudes and motivation on their success in physical education amid the shift back to in-person learning. Methods: A qualitative approach was employed involving 10 students and 6 PE instructors from higher education institutions, selected through purposive sampling. Data was gathered via in-depth interviews and analysed using Colaizzi’s phenomenological method, with member checking to validate findings. Findings/Results: Students experienced difficulties in skill performance and social reintegration, often accompanied by low confidence and reduced enthusiasm. Teachers highlighted behavioural issues, a lack of participation, and challenges in reestablishing productive classroom dynamics. Conclusion: These findings suggest a need to support students’ psychosocial and physical readiness through motivational and attitudinal interventions. For educators, fostering an engaging learning atmosphere and leveraging blended competencies are key. Future studies should involve broader samples and investigate the long-term effects of this educational transition to inform more effective PE practices.
