Abstract

Systematic and analytical investigations on foreign language communication anxiety outside the language training classroom context have important implications for language use. For instance, Guntzviller et al. (2016) stated that a study in that context will enhance the understanding on the emergence of negotiation with the multilingual environment in the foreign speaker’s everyday lives. Unfortunately, there seems to be a dearth in studies in the context mentioned earlier. Even if the studies discussed formerly could give an insight into how anxiety affects the performance of the second language use in the real word settings, they highly likely cannot be applied to the use of L2 in the academic environment. The primary objectives of this research are to investigate the extent to which Indonesian students experience speaking anxiety in the academic speaking context and internal factors promoting them. This study employed qualitative approach to explore the subjective opinions, experiences, and feelings of respondents (Dornyei, 2007) related to the research question. Based on the data obtained from the three data collection methods (reflective journal, Focus Group Discussion, and interview), the extents to which the speaking anxiety occur and internal factors promoting it were found varied. Keywords: Speaking anxiety, Indonesian students, internal factors

Abstract

Abstract. The purpose of this study is to explain the second language acquisition of the phonological aspects of children aged 4-5 years in Toraja. The researcher uses a psycholinguistic approach as a scalpel by focusing on the speech of the second language of children aged 4-5 years on the phonological aspect by focusing on the pronunciation of phonemes. The results showed that at the phonological level, there was a change in the consonant phoneme /r/ to /l/ and a change in the vowel phoneme /e/ to /a/, as well as a change in the vowel phoneme /ə/ into /e/. The phoneme omission is found in the phoneme /h/ which is at the beginning of the word and at the end of the word, as well as the omission of the vowel phoneme /e/. The omission of syllables is found in the first syllable in a word consisting of three or more syllables. Based on the research data, it can be concluded that the second language acquisition of the phonological aspects of children aged 4-5 years in Toraja is dominantly influenced by the first language in the form of phonological interference of letter changes. Keywords: Second Language Acquisition, Psycholinguistics, Toraja Children's Speech

Abstract

Abstract. This article discusses migration experiences of a young migrant Arab Muslim woman in a western country portrayed in a contemporary electronic (digital literature) English young adult novel entitled Alina Kanaan written by Rhonda Boldt published in 2021 by Wattpad, a social storytelling application. This research aims to explain migration experiences of a young migrant Arab Muslim woman from Palestine in America through the analysis of the main migrant character with her problems related to hybridity, ambivalence & adjustment, and abandonment & return. The result shows that the novel has many diaspora issues especially through the experiences of migration of the main female character, Alina Kaanan as a young migrant Arab Muslim migrant woman in America. She struggles to face problems and to integrate to the new society through her hybrid identity, ambivalence & adjustment mainly through three issues namely language adjustment, food & drink selection, and avoding “free sex culture,” as well as through the aspects of abandonment and return. Eventhough she receives bad threatments namely discrimination and racism toward Muslims in America from a number of Americans, she decides not to return to her homeland but to continue to live in the hostland America and pursuing her dream to be a successful singer as the winner of American Idol by maintaining her identiy as a migrant Arab Muslim woman and an American resident at the same time. Keywords: Diaspora, Migration, Arab Muslim Woman, Electronic literature, Wattpad, Young Adult English Novel
