Abstract

The increasing integration of Islamic values into regional education policies in Indonesia reflects a new dynamic between public spirituality and the rationality of government bureaucracy. While previous studies have examined sharia-based regulations from political and legal perspectives, few have specifically explored how Islamic values are formalized within regional education policies. This article aims to analyze the forms and patterns of Islamic formalization in education policies across four regencies in East Java (Jombang, Ponorogo, Pasuruan, and Lamongan) by emphasizing the balance between religious spirit and administrative rationality. Using a qualitative-normative approach and the systematic literature review method, this study examines regional policy documents, national legislation, and relevant empirical research. The findings indicate that local governments institutionalize Islamic values through educational regulations oriented toward strengthening religious character, such as compulsory diniyah education, Qur’anic literacy programs, and habitual religious activities in schools. This process represents the rationalization of spirituality, wherein religious values are translated into measurable administrative frameworks without losing their moral essence. Conceptually, the formalization of Islam in education policy illustrates a synthesis between public morality and modern governance; practically, it contributes to the enhancement of students’ moral character and the harmonization between religious society and educational bureaucracy. The study recommends a mixed-methods approach for future research to assess the empirical impact of Islamic-based education policies on the quality and character development of students at the regional level.

Abstract

This study examines how learning interest and the learning environment influence students’ academic achievement in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) at UPT SPF SD Inpres Panaikang II/1, Makassar. Education serves a vital role in shaping knowledgeable and morally grounded learners, and in PAI, success is determined by both internal and external factors. Despite existing research on these variables, studies focusing specifically on PAI at the elementary level remain limited. Preliminary observations revealed low interest in PAI and an insufficiently supportive learning environment, underscoring the need for empirical investigation. Using a quantitative descriptive design, data were gathered through observation, questionnaires, and documentation from 38 purposively selected fifth-grade students. Analytical procedures included instrument testing, multiple linear regression, and significance testing. Results show that students’ learning interest falls within a good category, the learning environment is considered high, and academic achievement in PAI is very good. Simultaneous testing indicates that learning interest and the learning environment together significantly influence academic achievement. However, partial analysis reveals that learning interest does not have a significant standalone effect, whereas the learning environment exerts a significant positive influence. The coefficient of determination (R² = 0.243) indicates that both variables account for 24.3% of the variance in academic outcomes. The findings highlight the dominant role of external conditions in shaping PAI achievement. Enhancing supportive and interactive learning environments, supported by teacher initiatives and parental involvement, is essential for improving student performance. This study contributes to empirical understanding of the determinants of PAI learning success in elementary education.

Abstract

The low interest in writing among students of the Islamic Education Management (MPI) Study Program has affected their learning motivation and critical thinking skills. This condition indicates a gap between academic demands that emphasize literacy competence and the reality of students limited participation in writing activities. Based on this issue, this study aims to describe the influence of a writing program on improving the learning motivation of MPI students. This research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data were collected through interviews, participatory observations, and documentation, with informants selected based on their experience in participating in the writing program. The findings reveal that the writing program significantly contributes to enhancing students enthusiasm and learning motivation. Activities such as writing training, the formation of learning communities, lecturer mentoring, scientific writing competitions, and publication of written works have proven effective in strengthening students academic skills and self-confidence. However, challenges remain, including low academic interest, dependence on technology, and limited understanding of writing structure. These obstacles can be overcome through strengthening internal motivation, fostering literacy habits, effective time management, and creating a supportive academic environment. The findings suggest that the writing program plays a strategic role in shaping MPI students to become independent, critical, and competitive individuals in the development of Islamic education.

Abstract

The Javanese people in Bratasena Adiwarna have been practicing tumpengan culture for a long time, even from their ancient ancestors, this is still preserved in the modern era as a tradition that still exists among Javanese people who still adhere to tradition, but what is lacking in Javanese society in this modern era is the lack of understanding of the values ​​of Islamic education in the tumpengan tradition in Bratasena Adiwarna Village. The Javanese people in Bratasena Adiwarna have been practicing tumpengan culture for a long time, even from their ancient ancestors, this is still preserved in the modern era as a tradition that still exists among Javanese people who still adhere to tradition, but what is lacking in Javanese society in this modern era is the lack of understanding of the values of Islamic education in the tumpengan tradition in Bratasena Adiwarna Village. This research method is qualitative descriptive with a type of field research, namely going directly to the field to explore the problems to be researched through a phenomenological approach, which is a factual interpretive investigation regarding human experience: seeking to understand and describe situations, events and human experiences as something that appears and is present in everyday life. The data collection techniques used by the author in this research are interviews, observation and documentation. Based on the analysis, the author found several values ​​of Islamic education in the tumpengan tradition in Bratasena Adiwarna Village, namely (1) Faith Values ​​(2) Worship Values ​​(3) Moral Values.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the management of the Islamic boarding school system in enhancing the religious character of dormitory students at SMP Unismuh Makassar. The boarding school model is viewed as a strategic alternative to instill Islamic values through the integration of formal education and daily spiritual guidance. This research employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques including observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using the interactive model developed by Miles and Huberman. The findings indicate that the management of the Islamic boarding school at SMP Unismuh Makassar includes structured planning, organizing, implementation, and evaluation processes focused on the development of students’ religious character. Programs such as worship guidance, Islamic moral habituation, Qur’anic learning, and other religious activities serve as key instruments in character formation. The implications of this management are evident in the creation of a religious and supportive dormitory environment. Nevertheless, the study identifies several challenges, including weak evaluation systems, inadequate documentation, and suboptimal collaboration among teachers, supervisors, and leadership. Supporting factors include role modeling by mentors, an integrated curriculum, and a conducive spiritual atmosphere. This study recommends strengthening the evaluation process, improving supervisor capacity, and developing an effective documentation system to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of religious character development in Islamic boarding school environments

Abstract

This study discusses the role of the Islamic Education Subject Teachers’ Forum (MGMP PAI) for vocational high schools (SMK) in Jeneponto Regency in enhancing teachers’ professional competence. The objectives are to: (1) examine the existence of MGMP PAI SMK in Jeneponto, (2) analyze its role in improving professional competence of teachers, and (3) identify supporting and inhibiting factors in carrying out that role. This is a field research study using a descriptive qualitative approach. Primary data were obtained from MGMP PAI SMK administrators, Islamic education teachers, and the Head of Islamic Education Section at the Ministry of Religious Affairs Office in Jeneponto. Secondary data came from relevant documents. Data collection techniques included observation, interviews, and documentation, and data validity was tested through triangulation. The findings reveal that MGMP PAI SMK in Jeneponto has existed since 2015 and is officially recognized, as evidenced by a formal decree. Its presence is perceived positively through various beneficial activities for members. MGMP plays a strategic role in developing professional competence by motivating teachers to improve their conceptual understanding, organize subject structures, systematize content, and design effective lesson plans aligned with student needs. Supporting factors include internal strengths such as active involvement of members and external opportunities through partnerships. Inhibiting factors include lack of motivation among members, their workload in home institutions, limited facilities, and budget constraints. This study is expected to contribute to strengthening the existence and innovation of MGMP PAI SMK in fostering the professional development of Islamic education teachers.

Abstract

Student engagement and enthusiasm are essential components of effective learning, particularly in Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam / PAI), which is often delivered over long instructional periods. In classroom practice, extended lesson duration frequently leads to student boredom, loss of focus, and decreased emotional readiness to learn, thereby reducing the effectiveness of instruction. Although previous studies have discussed the use of ice breaking activities to enhance motivation and classroom atmosphere, limited research has specifically examined contextual, practice-based ice breaking strategies within PAI learning at the junior secondary school level, particularly focusing on students’ emotional enthusiasm rather than academic performance. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the ice breaking “siku, sakit, sikat” activity and its impact on students’ learning enthusiasm in PAI classes at SMP Roudlotul Qur’an Rawadadi. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through classroom observations, in-depth interviews with the PAI teacher and students, and documentation of learning activities. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns related to the implementation process, student responses, and supporting and inhibiting factors. The findings indicate that the ice breaking “siku, sakit, sikat” activity effectively functions as a positive pedagogical interruption that restores students’ emotional energy, reduces boredom, and creates a more dynamic and enjoyable classroom atmosphere. Students demonstrated increased enthusiasm, emotional engagement, and social interaction after the activity, although its impact on academic participation such as questioning and discussion remained limited and depended on individual student characteristics. The study concludes that ice breaking “siku, sakit, sikat” plays a significant role in enhancing students’ emotional readiness and enthusiasm for learning PAI. While it does not directly improve academic participation, it provides an important emotional and social foundation that supports more effective learning conditions.

Abstract

This study offers a bibliometric evaluation of the development trends, collaborative networks, and knowledge framework in Asian Islamic Educational Psychology from 2010 to 2024. Data were obtained from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, resulting in 1,247 papers that satisfied the inclusion criteria. Analytical instruments including VOSviewer and Bibliometrix R were utilized to delineate co-authorship networks, co-citation trends, keyword co-occurrence, and theme progression. The findings indicate Indonesia's pivotal position as the hub of research, bolstered by its numerous Islamic higher education institutions and international partnerships with Malaysia, Brunei, Pakistan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Western nations such the United States and the United Kingdom. Thematic mapping reveals three primary orientations: (1) development of conceptual and theoretical models, (2) psychological techniques in socio-religious contexts, and (3) developing current challenges such as gender, artificial intelligence, leadership, and multiculturalism. The historical progression indicates a transition from conventional themes, including higher education and pedagogy (2018–2020), to multidisciplinary subjects such as psychology, gender, and knowledge (2020–2022), culminating in a focus on balanced leadership, systematic reviews, and evidence-based methodologies (2022–2024). This study confirms that Islamic teaching Psychology in Asia is progressing beyond mere identity reinforcement to actively participating in global scientific discourse, merging traditional Islamic epistemology with contemporary psychological frameworks and technology-enhanced teaching methodologies.

Abstract

The implementation of the scientific approach in Indonesia’s 2013 Curriculum is intended to promote student-centered learning, critical thinking, and meaningful knowledge construction, including in Islamic Religious Education. However, its application in Al-Qur’an Hadith learning still presents practical challenges, particularly in adapting scientific learning principles to religious subject matter. Previous studies have largely focused on normative descriptions of curriculum implementation, with limited attention to classroom-level dynamics and teacher strategies in specific local contexts. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the scientific approach in Al-Qur’an Hadith learning, identify the obstacles faced by teachers, and examine the efforts undertaken to address these challenges at MAN 1 Sumbawa Besar. This research employed a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with school leaders, teachers, and students, and documentation analysis of learning plans and instructional materials. The data were analyzed using qualitative techniques involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the scientific approach has been implemented through the stages of observing, questioning, collecting information, associating, and communicating. The approach contributes positively to student engagement and active learning. Nevertheless, several obstacles were identified, including limited instructional time, students’ low participation in questioning and communication stages, and variations in learning readiness. Teachers addressed these challenges through personal student approaches, improved lesson preparation, structured group work, and contextual learning strategies. This study contributes to the development of context-sensitive strategies for implementing the scientific approach in Islamic education. It concludes that successful implementation requires pedagogical flexibility, effective classroom management, and sustained support for teachers to optimize student participation and learning outcomes.

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (Pendidikan Agama Islam/PAI) in Islamic higher education institutions is increasingly challenged to remain relevant amid rapid social, cultural, and religious transformations. In practice, PAI has long been dominated by normative and textual approaches, which tend to limit its responsiveness to contemporary social realities. Although the discourse on transforming PAI has grown, existing studies are largely conceptual and normative, with limited empirical evidence at the program study level. This study aims to examine the transformation of PAI through a case study of the PAI Program at IAI Al Jihad Shalahuddin Al Ayyubi Jakarta, focusing on shifts in paradigm, pedagogy, and social praxis. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through document analysis, including institutional self-evaluation reports, curriculum documents, strategic plans, and reports on research and community engagement, and analyzed thematically. The findings reveal a significant shift in PAI from a normative-textual orientation toward a more contextual, reflective, and socially responsive approach. This transformation is evident in the integration of Islamic values with social realities, the adoption of participatory and reflective pedagogical practices, and the expansion of PAI’s role in community engagement. The study contributes empirically to the field of Islamic Religious Education by demonstrating how PAI can be developed as a transformative discipline grounded in institutional practice. It concludes that PAI has strong potential to function as a dynamic and relevant field of study capable of responding to contemporary challenges while maintaining its normative Islamic foundations.
