Abstract

This program was carried out on the Nipah River Coast farmers group, Pesisir Selatan Regency, West Sumatra Province. This activity aims to overcome the problem of the availability of feed ingredients that are not continuous, the price is relatively high, and their use is still competitive with human needs such as corn and fish meal. In addition, this activity aims to introduce the method of processing brown seaweed of the Turbinaria murayana species, which grows a lot around the Nipah River Coast, Pesisir Selatan Regency, which can be utilized and processed as poultry feed ingredients. This community service activity is carried out using counselling and training methods. The extension activities included introducing the taking and processing of T. murayana brown seaweed for poultry feed ingredients. Training consisted of pilot processes and practical exercises in processing T. murayana seaweed as poultry feed ingredients. Participants in this service activity consisted of 20 men and women. The results of this activity can improve the knowledge and skills of farmers regarding seaweed processing in the Sungai Nipah Coastal area, Pesisir Selatan Regency. The conclusion of this community service activity is the increase in farmers' knowledge and skills about the potential use of T. murayana seaweed and its processing as poultry feed ingredients.

Abstract

The pain was the main problem in post-surgery patients and sometimes resulted in activity limitations. One non-pharmacological therapy was finger gripping therapy which can be an option for overcoming post-operative pain. The activity aimed to increase the knowledge and skills of patients under surgery in treating their pain using the finger-gripping therapy method. This training was carried out ten on post-operative patients from the surgery recovery room in hospitals in Padang. We used PowerPoint presentations, leaflets, and simulation videos in this training. Pre-test and post-test were used in the evaluation stage. The results showed that there was increased knowledge of patients after attending finger grip therapy training. The patient’s pain level decreased after practising finger gripping therapy. The training and education programme effectively improved the knowledge and skills of patients in managing their pain independently. Continuing education can be an effort to enhance the self-management of post-operative patients.

Abstract

Incidents of child abuse increase every year, including cases in West Sumatra. Violence experienced by children can cause physical disorders, impairment in cognitive, emotional, and social development, and discrimination in the social environment. The government has set rules regarding the protection of children against violence. Still, not all people know the forms of child abuse, their impact on children, and how to report child abuse cases. Therefore, we held a webinar, "Knowing more about child abuse," to educate people. One hundred three participants from various backgrounds attended this activity, but only 90 completed the pre-test and post-test questionnaires. Based on paired T-test, there was a significant increase in the mean score of participants' knowledge about emotional violence, sexual violence, and neglect/abandonment after the webinar (p<0.05). In addition, there was also an increase in the mean score of participants' knowledge about physical violence, although it was not statistically significant (p=0.103). In conclusion, education in webinars can increase public knowledge about child abuse.

Abstract

Parasitic diseases usually attack cattle or sheep, which can cause a decrease in livestock productivity. One of the parasitic diseases that arise is caused by the cage's cleanliness and poor management of faecal waste. This community engagement activity aims to increase farmers' knowledge about ruminants' parasitic diseases and train them to produce organic fertilizer from cow faeces. The activity was carried out at the Putra Rahayu Cattle Group Farmers in Tawangrejo Village, Jatipurno District, Wonogiri Regency. Activities included conveying information about parasitic diseases and training on making organic fertilizer from cow faeces. This livestock group has 25 members. All participants participated in the activity enthusiastically. As many as 28.6% of respondents already know how to make organic fertilizer. All participants did not know about parasitic diseases. After counselling and training, farmers' knowledge increased by 72.4% about how to make organic fertilizers and increased 100% of their knowledge about parasitic diseases in livestock. The results of the cow faeces test found that Toxocara sp., strongyle and trematode parasite eggs were then given a grant in the form of parasitic drugs for ruminants. This activity concludes that farmers' knowledge of parasitic diseases and organic fertilizers increases.

Abstract

Jorong Rimbo Janduang is located in Nagari Lingkuang Aua, Pasaman District, West Pasaman Regency. The main livelihoods of the local people are gardeners and traders. There are many types of plant vegetation in Jorong Rimbo Janduang, some of which can be the main source of food for bees, but the community around the location has not cultivated stingless bees (galo-galo). Raising gallo-galo is different from raising cows, goats, and chickens because we do not need to look for food every day, as long as there are lots of bee-feeding plants growing around it. The success of gallo-galo cultivation is 70-80% influenced by the availability of feed sources in the form of nectar, pollen, and resin obtained from forage plant vegetation around the cultivation site. This community engagement activity aims to increase the knowledge and the desire of the community for stingless bee farming, increase the vegetation of forage plants around the location for beekeeping, and improve the community's economy. The methods used were counseling, mentoring, training, and modeling. The method of implementing science and technology is carried out by applying several technologies according to the objectives of these social services.

Abstract

Hypertension is a chronic disease with long-term treatment. According to World Health Organization (WHO) data, only 36.8% of hypertensive patients take hypertension medication properly. Adherence is the most common problem in the treatment of hypertension. This adherence can be improved by providing counseling regarding the use of medicine boxes as a tool that can increase patient compliance in taking medicine. This community service activity aims to improve medication adherence in hypertension patients in Lubuk Kilangan District, Padang City. The counseling session was held among 35 participants. Based on sociodemographic data, it was found that there were differences in the number of female and male participants (80%: 20%), as well as the level of education and type of work (unemployment 94%) . Therefore, community service is expected to improve medication adherence in hypertensive patients (>80%). If medication adherence has increased, it is hoped that the incidence of hypertension can be reduced.
