Abstract

This community service program aimed to increase awareness of eye health and facilitate early detection of refractive errors among students at Stella Duce 2 Senior High School, Yogyakarta. The activities were conducted from August 4-8, 2025, involving Grade X students as the main participants, with teachers and staff as additional targets. The methods included interactive health education, basic eye examinations (visual acuity, ocular motility, color vision, pupillary reflex, external and internal checks), and a short video competition themed “Jaga Mata untuk Masa Depan Cerah.” Results showed active student participation in education sessions, 190 individuals underwent eye screening, and several refractive errors requiring correction or referral were detected. The video competition produced creative educational content that was shared on social media, extending the program’s outreach. In conclusion, the program improved eye health awareness, enabled early detection of vision problems, and encouraged digital health promotion. This model can be replicated in other schools to strengthen promotive and preventive eye care.

Abstract

Low back pain is a common degenerative illness among the elderly, significantly impacting their quality of life and independence. Insufficient understanding of effective management frequently worsens the disease. The objective of this community service program was to enhance comprehension of low back pain among elderly and their caregivers at the Olak Kemang Public Health Centre in Jambi City. The programme consisted of an instructional session with 41 participants utilising a multidisciplinary-developed interactive visual module, accompanied by a practical demonstration of stretching exercises. A pre- and post-test design was used to quantitatively evaluate the alteration in participants' knowledge. The data were examined with the Wilcoxon and Pearson chi-square tests. The findings indicated a statistically significant enhancement in participants' knowledge, with the median score increasing from 60 (range: 30-80) in the pre-test to 85 (range: 50-100) in the post-test (p < 0.001). The number of participants who attained a passing score (≥70%) rose considerably from 19 to 31 (p = 0.007). The interactive visual education program effectively enhances awareness regarding lowback pain among the elderly and their caregivers. This strategy is highly recommended for implementation in other community health programs. Keywords: Low back pain; caregiver; health education; elderly

Abstract

Preeclampsia is a leading cause of maternal and perinatal complications. Preventive strategies based on local food resources offer a sustainable approach aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals. This study describes a community-based intervention integrating nutrition, health education, and periodic monitoring among pregnant women in the Puskesmas Tahtul Yaman area, located along the riverside in Jambi. The intervention applied the Health Belief Model to enhance perceived benefits and reduce barriers, the Theory of Planned Behavior to strengthen attitudes and behavioral control, and Knowles’ Adult Learning Theory for contextual learning. Activities were conducted in two phases. In the first phase (gestational age 26–28 weeks, trimester 2), pregnant women attended sessions on preeclampsia and safe fish consumption, supported by cooking demonstrations using nutrient-dense river fish. They received fish-based meals twice weekly for six weeks. Maternal health was monitored through blood pressure, weight gain, and symptoms, while fetal well-being was assessed by ultrasonography. The second phase, eight weeks later (trimester 3), repeated maternal examination and ultrasonography for follow-up of pregnancy. None of the participants developed hypertension, fetal growth matched gestational age, and mothers showed improved knowledge of preeclampsia and its prevention, particularly through fish consumption. This community-driven model demonstrates the effectiveness of combining local nutrition, adult learning strategies, and regular maternal-fetal monitoring. It highlights a feasible, culturally sensitive, and sustainable approach to strengthen maternal health and prevent preeclampsia in resource-limited settings. Keywords:; community-based intervention; Health Belief Model; maternal health; preeclampsia prevention; river fish consumption

Abstract

Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a growing public health problem, characterized by central obesity, high blood sugar levels, increased blood pressure, and lipid profile disorders that can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. This community service activity was carried out to strengthen the competence of Posyandu cadres in the Tahtul Yaman Community Health Center (Puskesmas) work area in Jambi City in conducting early detection and providing education about MS. The program was implemented through three main stages: module development, module-based training, and direct mentoring in the field. The training module was designed by integrating the Health Belief Model (HBM) approach and andragogy principles, so that the learning process was more participatory and oriented towards the cadres' real-life experiences. A total of 15 cadres from nine Posyandus actively participated in this activity. Evaluation was carried out through pre- and post-tests to assess knowledge gains, and the Direct Observation of Procedural Skills (DOPS) method to measure practical skills. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge scores, with the pass rate increasing from 73.33% to 100% after the training. Cadres were able to implement screening procedures according to standards and explain the examination results well. However, the communication-education aspect still needs strengthening to make health messages more easily accepted by the public. Overall, this program has proven effective in increasing the capacity of Posyandu cadres as the frontline of promotive and preventive health services at the community level.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Monitoring child growth and development at the community level is essential for the early detection of growth delays and developmental disorders. However, many Posyandu cadres still face difficulties in interpreting growth indicators due to limited technical training and the absence of effective visual media. This community service program aimed to improve the competence of Posyandu cadres in monitoring child growth and development through training on the use of visual aids. The program was implemented at the Tahtul Yaman Public Health Center, Jambi City, involving 30 cadres from 12 community health posts. The activities included needs assessment, development of flipcharts and posters, training and simulation sessions, field implementation, and evaluation. The results showed a significant improvement in cadres’ knowledge, with the mean score increasing from 55 (pre-test) to 82 (post-test), representing a 49% increase. Participant feedback indicated high satisfaction, and the use of visual aids facilitated better understanding and interaction during health education sessions. This program demonstrates that visual-based participatory training effectively enhances cadres’ knowledge, confidence, and communication skills, and can be replicated to strengthen community-based early detection and stunting prevention programs. Abstract

Obesity is a major risk factors for non-communicable diseases, and its prevalence continues to increase in Indonesia. Community Health Centers, as primary healthcare providers, play a crucial role in obesity prevention through the empowerment of local health cadres. This community service aimed to enhance cadres’ knowledge and skills in early obesity detection. The program was implemented through a structured training consisting of material delivery and hands-on anthropometric measurement sessions, followed by field visits to Posyandu to evaluate cadres’ practical skills in performing anthropometric assessments. A total of 15 Posyandu cadres from the working area of Tahtul Yaman Community Health Center participated in this activity. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge, with median scores rising from 90 (range 50–100) in the pre-test to 100 (range 80–100) in the post-test (p = 0.007). The proportion of cadres achieving the passing score also increased from 53.3% to 100% (p = 0.006). Field observations indicated that most cadres were able to perform anthropometric examinations independently and in accordance with standard procedures. These findings suggest that structured training combined with practical field reinforcement may contribute to improving cadres’ competencies, thereby supporting their role in sustainable, community-based obesity prevention efforts.
