Abstract

Iron deficiency anemia remains a significant public health problem among adolescents in Indonesia, with evidence suggesting a persistent and increasing prevalence. Adolescent girls are particularly vulnerable due to increased iron requirements during rapid growth and menstrual blood loss, which may negatively affect cognitive performance, physical capacity, and future reproductive health. School-based interventions are therefore essential to strengthen early detection and prevention efforts. This community-based program aimed to promote adolescent health through hemoglobin (Hb) screening, nutritional status assessment, education on anemia and balanced nutrition, and the provision and monitoring of iron–folic acid supplementation. The activity was conducted in October 2025 at SMA Negeri 1 Imogiri, Bantul, involving 146 eleventh-grade students. A pre–post educational intervention design was applied. Data collection included Hb measurement using a portable Hb meter, anthropometric assessment (weight, height, body mass index, and arm circumfence), and a structured knowledge questionnaire. Knowledge levels increased from 62% before the intervention to 98% after the educational session, with a participant satisfaction rate of 97%. Several students were identified with low Hb levels and received follow-up support. This integrated, school-based approach demonstrates potential to improve health literacy and strengthen anemia prevention among adolescents.

Abstract

Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a frequent complication of general anaesthesia that prolongs recovery, increases the burden of care, and may lead to wound strain, dehydration, and aspiration. Many patients are unaware of this risk and hesitate to report their symptoms, while accessible, evidence-based educational material for the lay public remains scarce. This community service activity aimed to develop an electronic educational leaflet (e-leaflet) on the prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting and to disseminate it through social media. The activity was carried out in four stages: identifying the educational need, designing the content in a question-and-answer format, developing the material from a scientific literature review followed by expert validation and a lay-readability check, and disseminating the final product through Instagram and TikTok. The resulting product was an eleven-slide visual e-leaflet covering the definition, mechanism, risk factors, consequences, medical prevention, patient preparation, and warning signs of postoperative nausea and vomiting. Expert validation confirmed the scientific accuracy of the content, and lay readers judged the language to be understandable. This activity demonstrates that guideline-based knowledge on PONV can be feasibly translated into an accessible, low-cost digital education product for prospective surgical patients, and lays the groundwork for a subsequent, more rigorous evaluation of its impact on patient knowledge.

Abstract

Background: Obesity is a growing public health concern associated with an increased risk of non-communicable diseases. Improving public knowledge through health education is an important strategy for promoting healthy lifestyles and preventing obesity. Audiovisual media have been widely adopted to enhance educational effectiveness and participant engagement. Objective: This study evaluated the effectiveness of a community-based obesity education program using PowerPoint presentations and an educational video to improve participants' knowledge. Methods: A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was conducted among community participants in Jambi, Indonesia, in 2026. Participants completed a 10-item multiple-choice questionnaire before and after the educational session. The intervention covered the definition of obesity, body mass index classification, waist circumference, risk factors, complications, and lifestyle-based prevention strategies. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk test and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Forty-five participants completed both assessments. The mean knowledge score increased from 86.67 ± 12.25 at baseline to 94.89 ± 6.95 after the intervention. The distribution of score differences was non-normal (Shapiro–Wilk: W = 0.749, p < 0.001). The Wilcoxon signed-rank test demonstrated a significant improvement in knowledge following the educational intervention (W = 0, p < 0.001). Participant evaluation also indicated high acceptance of the educational program across all assessed domains, including material quality, video presentation quality, perceived educational benefits, and overall participant satisfaction. Conclusion: The community-based obesity education program effectively improved participants' knowledge and was well accepted by the participants. Integrating presentations with audiovisual media represents a practical approach to strengthening health literacy and supporting community-based obesity prevention. Abstract

Improperly managed solid waste from palm oil mills and cattle manure has the potential to cause environmental pollution and unpleasant odors and to serve as a breeding ground for disease vectors. Converting such waste into organic fertilizer represents one strategy for supporting sustainable environmental management while simultaneously enhancing the economic value accruing to the community. This community service activity aimed to improve farmers' knowledge and skills in producing organic fertilizer and to develop added value through packaging and marketing strategies. The activity was carried out with the Srigati Farmers' Group in Sido Mukti Village, Dendang Subdistrict, East Tanjung Jabung Regency, using a technical guidance method comprising material delivery, demonstration, hands-on practice in organic fertilizer production, packaging practice using pre-prepared mature compost, and discussion on business development. Evaluation was conducted through observation of participant engagement, a pretest–posttest assessment, and a satisfaction survey. The evaluation results indicated an increase in participants' knowledge following the technical guidance, accompanied by a high level of satisfaction with the training materials and methods. Most participants also expressed readiness to sustainably apply organic-fertilizer production technology. Abstract

Oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatus) are functional foods rich in nutrients and bioactive compounds that provide various health benefits. However, community awareness of these benefits remains limited. This community service program aimed to improve awareness of the health benefits of oyster mushrooms through functional food education among members of the Sipin Danau Sejahtera Women's Farmer Group. A one-day educational program was implemented using a three-stage approach comprising a baseline assessment through a pre-test, interactive education on the nutritional composition and health benefits of oyster mushrooms, and program evaluation using a questionnaire. A total of 32 participants attended the program. The educational intervention effectively increased participants' knowledge, with the mean knowledge score improving from 65.4% before the intervention to 98.3% after the educational session. Participants also demonstrated a better understanding of oyster mushrooms as functional foods that support healthy dietary practices. Functional food education effectively enhanced community awareness of the health benefits of oyster mushrooms. This educational approach has the potential to promote healthier dietary behaviors and increase the utilization of locally available functional foods to support community health.
