Humans, as social beings, have a fundamental need for love and affection that is important for their psychological well-being. This study explores how the fulfillment of this need is portrayed through the character Aris in the film “Ipar adalah Maut” (Brother-in-Law Can Be a Curse). The purpose of this study is to describe the fulfillment of love and affection within the hierarchy of needs in Abraham Maslow's humanistic psychology theory. A qualitative descriptive method was used, with the film “Brother-in-Law Can be a Curse” as the primary data source. Data were collected through literature review and observation-note techniques. The findings of the study show that the need for love and affection in the character Aris is fulfilled through his social interaction with Rani, his sister-in-law. The fulfillment of these needs is evident from the closeness that is established because they live in the same house, the intensity of meetings on campus, and the attention and emotional support given by Rani, especially when Aris's need for affection is not fully fulfilled by his wife, Nisa. This illustrates the shift in the object of Aris's affection, which has an impact on the dynamics of the relationship in the story.

This study examines language practices occurring in the comment sections of online media, specifically in the comment sections of news articles related to the 2024 Indonesian presidential election. The researcher found that there were instances of dysphemistic language behavior in the majority of comments in the election news comment sections. Using the critical discourse analysis method, the researcher analyzed both the textual and contextual aspects of comments that met the criteria for dysphemistic language practices. The research findings revealed dysphemistic practices carried out by commenters, directed both at the subjects being reported on and at other commenters participating in the discussion. Furthermore, the researcher also identified two social cognitions that underlie the production of dysphemistic comments. These two social cognitions are: (1) Rejecting Prabowo as a proxy for Jokowi; and (2) Presidential and vice-presidential candidates must not have negative sides. The practical contribution of this research is to provide an understanding of the impact of dysphemistic language practices in the comment sections of 2024 presidential election news on readers' social cognition, which can assist in designing more effective communication policies or strategies for managing healthy and constructive online interactions.

This study aims to analyze the use of assertive speech acts in an official press release by the Chief of the Indonesian Attorney General’s Office, which addressed public concerns over the illegal blending of RON 92 fuel. A descriptive qualitative method was employed, using documentation and indirect observation as data collection techniques. The researcher transcribed into written form and analyzed through pragmatic approach, focusing on identifying assertive speech acts based on Searle’s classifications. Data analysis applied Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, involving data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed 11 assertive speech acts categorized into four types: stating, reporting, claiming, and concluding. These speech acts functioned to rebuild public trust in Pertamina Patra Niaga and to counter misinformation circulating among the public. This research contributes to the understanding of how institutional communication through assertive speech acts can reinforce public confidence during social controversies.

This study aims to understand the myth of the rat and the 'Rat Man' through their behavior in the film The Rat Catcher. The research employs a qualitative method with data collection through note-taking. The researcher watches the film and records dialogues related to the research theme. The data analysis technique is conducted by analyzing the dialogues and behaviors in The Rat Catcher1 in relation to the concept of myth within Claude Levi-Strauss's structuralism. Myths are often associated with events in society that influence customs or lifestyles of those who believe in them. Through Levi-Strauss's structuralist analysis, it was found that the failure of the Rat Man to catch the rat highlights the irony of the myth. The various methods he employs to catch the rat, ranging from ordinary to unique and even extreme, yield no results. In conclusion, the Rat Man remains trapped in an illusion that does not prove the myth he believes in, thus the myth about the rat continues to linger in his mind. The contribution of this study is to provide an understanding of how the myths of the rat and the 'Rat Man' can be analyzed through the lens of Claude Levi-Strauss's structuralism to reveal the irony and failure in the application of these myths.

The use of proper and correct Indonesian on public signage reflects professionalism and the image of a region in the eyes of tourists and the general public. This study aims to analyze the use of Indonesian on tourism signage and street signs in Central Maluku Regency. This research uses a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach to reveal the reality of Indonesian language usage in public spaces. The findings of this study include two main results. First, the portrayal of Indonesian usage on tourism signage and street signs in the areas of Tulehu, Waai, Liang, and Morella, which contains 16 data points (10 tourism signage data and 6 street sign data). These are only three tourism signs (in Tulehu, Liang, and Morella) adhered to normative theory, while the rest did not, especially those in Wai, Liang, Tulehu, and Morella. Second, there are four areas where the signs align with communicative theory (Tulehu, Waai, Liang); however, two data points in Tulehu and Morella do not align due to incorrect writing on street signs, which causes confusion among road users. This study makes a significant contribution to the development of language policy, particularly in organizing Indonesian language in public spaces in Central Maluku Regency. The results can serve as a reference for local governments, tourism destination managers, and the public to raise awareness and skills in using proper and correct Indonesian, thus creating a positive regional image and facilitating public communication

This study evaluates and compares the integration of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) in Indonesian language textbooks for high school students under the 2013 Curriculum and the Merdeka Curriculum. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the study conducts content analysis of four textbooks two aligned with the 2013 Curriculum and two with the Merdeka Curriculum employing HOTS criteria derived from Bloom’s taxonomy. The findings reveal that the 2013 Curriculum textbook (2014 edition) includes 78 questions, with 17 in the analyzing category and 37 in the evaluating category (32 checking and 24 criticizing questions). In comparison, the Merdeka Curriculum textbook (2021 edition) presents 55 questions, comprising 14 analyzing and 32 evaluating questions (25 checking and 16 criticizing). Despite a decrease in the total number of questions, the Merdeka Curriculum exhibits a greater emphasis on deeper critical evaluation, reflecting a pedagogical shift toward fostering students' critical thinking competencies. The contribution of this research lies in providing empirical evidence on how curriculum reforms affect the cognitive depth of textbook content, thereby offering insights for curriculum developers, textbook authors, and educators in designing learning materials that effectively promote 21st-century skills.

Cognitive stylistics always endeavors to scrutinize texts thoroughly to examine the application of theories and concepts in cognitive linguistics to enhance the understanding of texts that condense information in few words. The current research paper sets itself the task of answering the following question: what kind of cognitive stylistic features are implemented in sports commentary and how cognitive stylistic concepts enhance the interpretation of this kind of discourse. As such, the paper aims to identify the cognitive stylistic features implemented in sports commentary by adopting the threefold model of Jeffries and Mclntyre encompassing: schema theory, cognitive metaphor, and contextual frame theory. Accordingly, the study hypothesizes that cognitive metaphors are the most prevalent cognitive stylistic element implemented in sports commentary. The current paper is limited to the analysis of football commentary presented by two commentators who are John Helm and Peter Drury on four World Cup matches. Results of the analysis verify the above mentioned hypothesis.

This study aims to reveal the content of negative politeness in netizens' speech in response to the President of Indonesia’s Instagram posts for the 2024–2029 period, highlighting the disparity between expected norms of respectful digital interaction and the often impolite or aggressive language used in political commentaries. The approach used is descriptive qualitative based on pragmatic theory, especially Brown and Levinson's politeness theory, and supported by a cyberpragmatic approach. Data in the form of netizens' verbal speech was collected using note-taking and screen capture techniques, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. The results of the study show that many comments contain violations of negative politeness, such as unmitigated direct speech, sharp criticism, and even sarcasm that threatens the face of the interlocutor. However, some netizens still show politeness strategies by conveying criticism in a subtle and implicit manner. This phenomenon reflects changes in communication patterns on social media, which are characterized by freer expression but tend to ignore politeness norms. These findings reinforce the importance, especially in terms of language ethics, and open up space for the integration of a cyberpragmatic approach in learning Indonesian.

Abstract The act of terror against the Tempo Newsroom through the delivery of physical symbols such as a pig’s head and rat carcasses represents a complex form of threatening communication laden with symbolic meaning. This study examines how the symbolic meanings of these acts of terror can be interpreted through a semiotic approach within the framework of forensic linguistics, and how such symbols function as a form of non-verbal threat communication. The objective of this research is to analyze the pig’s head and rat carcasses as cultural signs used in the context of intimidation against independent media. This qualitative descriptive research employs semiotic theories (Saussure and Peirce), Bourdieu’s theory of symbolic violence, and forensic linguistic analysis of indirect speech acts. Data were obtained through document analysis of online news reports, public statements, and relevant academic literature. The findings reveal that the pig’s head and rat carcasses function as symbolic representamen socially constructed as acts of humiliation and warning. These signs carry connotations of impurity, filth, and threats directed at press institutions as a means of controlling freedom of expression. The symbols serve as indirect speech acts that are coercive and intimidating. The study concludes that symbolic violence in the form of non-verbal physical terror can serve as an effective tool of domination, especially when interpreted within the socio-political and cultural context in which it occurs.
