Abstract

Abstract

Acne is an inflammatory skin disorder that is mostly caused by Propionibacterium acnes. Secondary metabolites such as saponins, tannins, and flavonoids in strawberries and geraniol in Palmarosa oil can function as antibacterials. To produce a more durable product and increase the solubility of Palmarosa oil, a formula was developed in the form of a nanoemulgel peel-off mask because it is easy to apply to the skin, the active ingredient is quickly penetrated, and increases the stability of the active ingredient. The research aims to determine the effect of different concentrations of strawberry fruit extract on the physical properties and antibacterial activity of the test preparation against Propionibacterium acnes. The nanoemulgel peel-off mask was formulated in 3 different concentrations of strawberry fruit extract, namely F1 = 3%, F2 = 4%, and F3 = 5%. The nanoemulgel peel-off mask preparation was made by inserting nanoemulsion into the gel. The test evaluation included the % transmittance test, nanoemulsion type, pH, organoleptic, homogeneity, adhesion, spreadability, viscosity, drying time, and Propionibacterium acnes antibacterial activity test. The results showed that the difference in concentration of Strawberry fruit extract in the nanoemulgel peel off mask preparation had a significant effect on the results of pH, viscosity, spreadability, and adhesion tests, but did not have a significant effect on the results of the Propionibacterium acnes antibacterial activity test. The concentration of 5% Strawberry fruit extract in formula 3 had the best physical properties of the preparation and the greatest antibacterial activity of Propionibacterium acnes compared to other formulas with an inhibition zone value of 12.19 ± 0.70 mm.

Abstract

Abstract

The ethyl acetate fraction of the ethanol extract of roselle flower petals (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) was reported to have an SPF value of 13.83 ± 1.50 which was higher than the ethanol extract. So with the SPF value, the ethyl acetate fraction of roselle flower ethanol extract can be used as a sunscreen. One of the cosmetic preparations that is currently growing rapidly is serum. The purpose of this study was to formulate the ethyl acetate fraction of roselle petals into a serum that had good physical quality with variations in the concentration of xanthan gum and then the SPF value was determined. This research begins with the manufacture of ethanol extract of roselle petals. Then fractionation (liquid-liquid partition) was carried out using solvents with different polarities, namely n-hexane and ethyl acetate. Furthermore, the ethyl acetate fraction was formulated into serum with variations in the concentration of xanthan gum 0.3%, respectively; 0.6% and 1.2% were then tested for physical quality and stability. The next step is to determine the SPF value of the serum by using the UV spectrophotometric method and its calculation using the Mansur equation. The results showed that the serum ethyl acetate fraction of the ethanolic extract of roselle petals could be made into gel preparations with good physical qualities including organoleptic, viscosity, pH and homogeneity. Serum ethyl acetate fraction ethanol extract of roselle flower formulas 1, 2 and 3 had SPF values F1 respectively, namely 6.8595 ± 0.08 which included moderate protection potential; F2 is 7.0089 ± 0.17; and F3 which is 8.2251 ± 0.32 with extra protection potential. Variations in the concentration of xanthan gum in the serum formula affect the physical quality of the viscosity and potency of sunscreen preparations..

Abstract

Sarang Semut (Myrmecodia pendens Merr. & Perry) is a medical plant contains of flavonoids, tannins, phenolic compounds, polyphenols, and vitamin E. Those substances are potent antioxidants. This research refers to previous research that the ethanol extract of Sarang Semut (Myrmecodia pendens Merr. & Perry) provided antioxidant activity with a mean EC50 of 3.8021 µg/ml. The purpose of this research was to determine the antioxidant activity of the fractions of ethanolic extract of Sarang Semut  (Myrmecodia pendens Merr. & Perry) and to determine the highest antioxidant activity of them expressed by EC50. Sarang Semut (Myrmecodia pendens Merr. & Perry) was extracted by soxhletation method using 96% ethanol solvent, then the ethanolic extract partitioned by liquid-liquid fractionation with water, ethyl acetate, and n-hexane. Each fraction at a concentration of 0.9 µg/ml, 1.0 µg/ml, 2.0 µg/ml, 3.0 µg/ml, 4.0 µg/ml, and 5.0 µg/ml were tested by the DPPH method (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhidrazyl ) using a spectrophotometer at λ 515 nm and operating time 35 minutes. The result shows the fraction of ethyl acetate has the highest antioxidant activity with a mean EC50 of 2.8821 µg/ml. While the average EC50 fraction of water is 3.8830 µg/ml and n-hexane is 259.9872 µg/ml. From the statistical t test is known that the fraction of water and ethyl acetate have significantly different rates of EC50, while the average of n-hexane fractions were not analyzed statistically because the percentage  antioxidant activity of its fraction is not stable.
