Abstract

This study examines swear words as a form of social criticism in the short story “Jawaban Alina” by Seno Gumira Ajidarma, read by Dian Sastrowardoyo. Swear words, generally considered rude and impolite, may serve both aesthetic and rhetorical functions in literature. The data were collected from a transcription of the spoken performance, analyzed using qualitative content analysis within a sociolinguistic framework. The study specifically investigates how swear words function as linguistic strategies of resistance and emotional expression that reflect social inequality. The results show that swear words in this short story function as expressions of protest, emotional assertion, and satire against social injustice. The analysis highlights the connection between sociolinguistic theory and social criticism, emphasizing that linguistic choice can reveal social tension and ideological struggle in literary texts.

Abstract

This study examines learners’ perceptions of utilizing social media platforms, including TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube, as tools for acquiring English vocabulary. Recognizing that vocabulary is a key component of communicative competence, this research examines how informal, multimodal exposure through social media supports incidental vocabulary learning. A qualitative descriptive design was employed involving eight EFL students from a private university in Manado, Indonesia, who actively use social media for English learning. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically to identify patterns in learners’ experiences, strategies, and challenges. Findings reveal that most learners prefer video-based content for its visual clarity, contextual richness, and entertainment value, which foster motivation and engagement. Learners employed a combination of strategies, including note-taking, translation, and pronunciation practice, to enhance word retention. Participants viewed social media as an effective and enjoyable platform for vocabulary acquisition; however, they also encountered difficulties with accent comprehension, word retention, and technical constraints. The study finds that social media is a good supplement to formal education because it helps students learn on their own and exposes them to real language. It recommends that teachers integrate social media-based activities into classroom tasks to support vocabulary enrichment. Future research could employ mixed-method or experimental designs to measure the actual impact of social media exposure on vocabulary development.

Abstract

Teachers may use different ways to encourage students using target language. They may believe the more students practice the language the better their speaking skill will be. This study aims to investigate the use of reading dialogue and role-playing methods in facilitating students’ speaking skills. The study used a qualitative descriptive design by observing the classrooms. The participants were 30 students from Class VIII-B at one of the public junior high schools in Surabaya. The results showed that reading dialogues help students facilitate students’ speaking skills. Through role-playing and dialog reading, students could practice their fluency, accuracy, intonation, non-verbal communication, and confidence. Students became more fluent through repeated performance, more accurate through imitation of modelled sentences, and more expressive through attention to body language and eye contact. Overall, the study suggests that dialogue reading and role-play are effective in facilitating speaking skills, although teachers need to ensure that the activities maximise language exposure rather than focusing solely on creating an enjoyable atmosphere.

Abstract

Online fandom communities represent one of the most dynamic and linguistically diverse environments on social media, where politeness and hostility coexist within the same communicative space. This study investigates the realization of illocutionary speech acts in YouTube comment sections, focusing on interactions within anime fandom debates. Using Searle’s classification of illocutionary acts and Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory, the research analyzes 200 comments collected from popular anime-related videos between 2023 and 2024. The findings reveal that expressive and representative acts dominate the discourse, functioning both as strategies of solidarity and as tools of verbal conflict. Politeness emerges through acts of appreciation, humor, and defense of shared fandom identity, while hostility is expressed via sarcasm, ridicule, and impoliteness. The study concludes that the coexistence of these two forces reflects the social negotiation of identity and belonging within online fan cultures.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify and describe the psychological factors affecting the speaking performance of third-semester students of the English Education Study Program at Tadulako University. The study employed a quantitative descriptive design using a survey method with 100 randomly selected respondents. The instruments used were adapted from standardized scales: the Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale, the Speaking Self-Efficacy Scale, and the Attitude/Motivation Test Battery. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics through SPSS version 25, focusing on frequencies, percentages, and mean scores. The results revealed that students experienced a high level of anxiety (M = 3.13) and low self-confidence (M = 2.03), both of which served as psychological barriers in speaking English. Conversely, students demonstrated high motivation (M = 3.53) and positive attitudes (M = 3.59) toward English-speaking activities, which acted as psychological strengths enhancing engagement and persistence in learning. Overall, these findings suggest that emotional and motivational factors significantly influence students’ speaking performance. Therefore, it is recommended that lecturers foster a supportive learning environment that reduces anxiety, enhances confidence, and maintains students’ motivation and positive attitudes toward English learning.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how youth identities are represented within social media discourse, particularly on the Instagram platform. Employing Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) based on Norman Fairclough’s framework, this research explores the relationship between language, power, and ideology in the production and consumption of digital content. The data were collected from Instagram posts and captions that depict Indonesian youths’ lifestyle, self-expression, and social image. The findings reveal that youth identity representations on Instagram are often constructed through consumptive symbols, visual aesthetics, and narratives of freedom and authenticity. However, beneath these narratives lie the hegemonic influence of popular culture and social pressure to perform an idealized self-image. The study concludes that social media functions not merely as a space for self-expression but as an arena of discursive struggle where meanings and power relations shape youth identities. This research contributes to critical discussions on how digital media mediates the construction of identity in contemporary society.

Abstract

This study examines Amina Wawud's interpretation of QS. An-Nisa: 34 through a feminist interpretive approach in response to gender bias in classical interpretations that tend to be patriarchal. The focus of this study is how the dominance of traditional interpretations gives legitimacy to the superiority of men over women in the domestic realm. The purpose of this research is to explore the hermeneutic offer of Wadud that is more oriented towards gender justice and equality. The research uses a qualitative method based on literature studies with primary sources in the form of Amina Wadud's work Qur'an and Woman. The results of the study show that Wadud interprets the word qanitāt as "good woman" and not just "obedience to the husband"; nusyūz is understood as domestic disharmony, not just the disobedience of the wife; and ḍaraba is not interpreted as "hitting", but rather emphasizing non-violent settlement. In conclusion, Wadud's feminist interpretation opens up a space for a more gender-fair reading of the Qur'an, as well as makes a significant contribution to strengthening the Muslim feminist movement in fighting for the equal role of women in the domestic and public spheres. The contribution of this research lies in the effort to deconstruct patriarchal interpretations and their relevance to the discourse of gender equality in contemporary social contexts.

Abstract

This article presents a qualitative analysis of the collaborative roles between the community and health workers in stunting prevention efforts within Tuapeijat Village, Mentawai Islands, a region confronting significant geographical challenges and limited healthcare facilities. Through interviews with key informants (parents, Posyandu cadres, midwives, and health center staff), the study found that the community actively participates in Posyandu and nutrition counseling, although effectiveness is constrained by limited knowledge and access to nutritional resources. Meanwhile, health workers function as facilitators and educators by monitoring child growth and providing interventions, but are hindered by constraints in personnel and facilities. Therefore, the success of stunting prevention highly depends on a strong synergy between these two parties, implemented through culturally appropriate approaches, thus emphasizing the need to focus on community empowerment and capacity building of health workers to foster a healthier future generation.

Abstract

The growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools has reshaped language learning, offering new opportunities for students to enhance their writing skills. This qualitative study explores the experiences of 27 first-semester students from the Islamic Education Management Department at Institut Jam’iyah Mahmudiyah, Tanjung Pura, in learning English writing through ChatGPT. The study aims to understand how students use ChatGPT as a problem-solving tool when facing difficulties in grammar, vocabulary, and sentence construction. Data were collected through questionnaires and written reflections. The findings reveal that students use ChatGPT to find examples, clarify grammatical rules, and practice sentence formation in various contexts. Many students reported feelings of curiosity, engagement, and self-reflection during the process. The study implies that ChatGPT can serve as an effective learning companion, fostering learner autonomy and motivation in developing writing skills among beginner students in Islamic higher education settings.

Abstract

This study examined the effectiveness of project-based learning (PBL) that was integrated with video conferencing platforms such as OmeTV to assess its impact on willingness to communicate (WTC) in English. Fifty students from vocational college were selected as an experimental group who received PBL approach, and another fifty students participated as a control group, who only attended video conferencing session. The study employed mixed methods, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data, to investigate students’ improvement on WTC before and after the implementation of PBL activities.  A questionnaire was developed by adopting WTC model from McIntyre (1998) to assess the effectiveness of PBL on the students’ WTC; meanwhile, in-depth interviews took place to explore the experiences and perspectives of how a supportive English environment can influence their WTC, challenge them to use English more actively and interactively, and overcome the difficulty of misunderstanding across cultures. The findings revealed a significant improvement in WTC for the experimental group, indicated by a t-value of 16.780 (p 0.001) and an R² increase from 45.3% to 85.4%. Conversely, the control group showed moderate improvement (t-value of 12.333, p 0.001) and an R² increase from 12.8% to 76%. This implied that video conferencing alone had a positive effect on the students’ WTC, but it was less impactful compared to the experimental groups who received PBL approach. Meanwhile, the interview results highlighted three key themes, namely, 1) feeling motivated to continue communicating in English and building confidence as an indicator of improved WTC, 2) challenges with foreigners helped them identify and overcome their language barrier and fear of making mistakes, and 3) usefulness of video conferencing session that provided authentic communication. Video conferencing platforms, such as OmeTV, enhance students' communication skills and build their confidence. Overall, the study contributes to the development of pedagogical approaches, as PBL offered student-centered learning to enhance their English language proficiency and communicative competence in the context of vocational students.
