Abstract

This study originated from a research question regarding the moral crisis in the digital age, characterized by phenomena such as FOMO, social media addiction, the culture of flexing, hoaxes, post-truth, and cyberbullying all of which undermine the integrity, empathy, and spiritual resilience of the younger generation. The research question posed is how the concept of tazkiyatun nafs in the Sufi tradition can be implemented as a solution to this digital moral crisis. The method used is qualitative research employing a library research approach, through a systematic analysis of classical Sufi literature, Islamic ethics, and modern media psychology. The results indicate that tazkiyatun nafs, with its three stages: takhalli, tahalli, and tajalli can serve as a conceptual framework that bridges digital exposure with moral behavior. Takhalli is manifested as a spiritual digital detox process that purifies undesirable traits in online interactions; tahalli plays a role in fostering virtuous traits through digital moral practices that cultivate empathy, honesty, and responsibility; while tajalli brings about divine awareness that guides every digital activity, thereby fostering emotional stability and inner peace. The findings of this study confirm that tazkiyatun nafs is not only theologically relevant but also applicable in the context of contemporary digital psychology, and can be implemented through digital muhasabah, online zikir communities, and technology-based religious education. Thus, this study makes a tangible contribution to strengthening the moral integrity, spiritual well-being, and mental resilience of the younger generation as they face the challenges of the digital age

Abstract

Sapta Darma, as one of the belief systems (aliran kepercayaan) developing in Jemur Wonosari, Surabaya, exists as a minority group amid the dominance of officially recognized religions, thereby facing challenges in maintaining its existence while building harmonious relations with its surrounding environment. Based on this issue, the study formulates three research questions: (1) What forms of inclusivity are implemented by the Sapta Darma community in Jemur Wonosari, Surabaya; (2) How does inclusivity serve as a strategy to maintain the existence of Sapta Darma as a local belief system; (3) What factors support and hinder the implementation of inclusivity in maintaining the existence of Sapta Darma as a local belief system. The study employs a descriptive-analytical qualitative method grounded in Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann's social construction theory, involving observation of six informants. The results show that inclusivity is manifested through theological, social, and cultural dimensions, and functions as a strategy through active participation in community activities, open communication without coercion, and sensitivity in designing activities to build social acceptance at the micro, meso, and macro levels. Legal protection, an open (non-exclusive) system of teachings, and good relations with community leaders serve as supporting factors, while inconsistencies in policy implementation and negative stigma remain inhibiting factors. These findings indicate that inclusivity functions as a strategy for preserving Sapta Darma's existence while also fostering good social relations

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concepts of khauf and raja’ in Imam Al-Ghazali's thought and their relevance to the formation of self-control in modern life. The study uses a qualitative approach with library research. The main source of the study is the book Minhajul ‘Abidin by Imam Al-Ghazali, supported by various scientific literature on Sufism, Islamic psychology, and self-control. Data were analyzed using content analysis techniques through the process of identifying, interpreting, and synthesizing concepts related to khauf, raja’, and self-control. The results show that khauf functions as a self-control mechanism that originates from spiritual awareness of supervision and accountability before God. This concept encourages individuals to control their desires, increase self-reflection, and form a strong moral awareness. Meanwhile, raja’ acts as a motivational force that fosters optimism, psychological resilience, and a spirit of self-improvement through hope in God's grace. This study found that the balance between khauf and raja’ forms a comprehensive pattern of self-control because it integrates spiritual, moral, and psychological dimensions simultaneously. Therefore, the concept of khauf and raja’ in Imam Al-Ghazali's thinking has significant relevance as a basis for strengthening self-control in facing various moral, emotional, and social challenges in the modern era

Abstract

Spiritual education in pesantren (Islamic boarding schools) is closely connected with the cultivation of character and moral conduct (akhlak). This study examines Dalā'il al-Khayrāt as a devotional practice through which spiritual values are interpreted and internalized by students at Darussalam Plaosan Islamic Boarding School, Purworejo. It addresses three questions: (1) which spiritual values are associated with Dalā'il al-Khayrāt, (2) how students internalize these values in daily life, and (3) how participants relate the practice to their moral development. Using a qualitative case study design, data were collected through observation, semi-structured interviews with the pengasuh (caretaker and religious leader), one administrator, and five students, as well as documentation. The data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The findings show that mahabbah (love for the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him) is the value most directly associated with the devotional content of Dalā'il al-Khayrāt, while istiqāmah (steadfastness), responsibility, discipline, humility (tawāḍuʿ), and related moral dispositions were reported primarily in connection with repeated practice, guidance, and the wider religious environment of the pesantren. Internalization was described through the granting of ijazah (authorization to practice a religious tradition), habituation through regular recitation and mujāhadah (spiritual striving), and reinforcement through exemplary leadership and institutional religious culture. Participants associated these processes with greater discipline, responsibility, respectful conduct, self-control, consistency in worship, and inner tranquility. Given the single-site design and short field period, these findings indicate perceived associations rather than independent causal effects

Abstract

Adolescence is a developmental period strongly influenced by the social environment, particularly peers, including in the sphere of religious behavior such as participation in puja bakti. Preliminary observations of Buddhist adolescents in Sampetan, Boyolali, showed variation in participation in puja bakti that appeared to be associated with peer relationships, although the specific forms of this influence were not yet clear. This study aimed to describe the role of peers in shaping Buddhist adolescents’ motivation to participate in puja bakti in Sampetan, identify the forms of peer influence on their participation, and analyze the factors affecting their motivation. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed involving four Buddhist adolescents in Sampetan who were members of REDISA (Sampetan Village Buddhist Youth) as key informants selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation and were analyzed using the interactive analysis model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, consisting of data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that peers primarily function as a source of social support by reminding one another of puja bakti schedules, inviting one another to attend together, modeling religious behavior, and creating a sense of comfort during activities. Based on the informants’ experiences, these forms of support were associated with greater enthusiasm for participating in puja bakti, although religious motivation was also influenced by other factors, including personal awareness, parents, and vihara mentors. Viewed through Social Learning Theory and Self-Determination Theory, the study concludes that peers are perceived as playing a supportive role in Buddhist adolescents’ participation in puja bakti in Sampetan

Abstract

This study examines how the Semarang City Forum for Interfaith Harmony (FKUB) translates Qur’anic principles governing Muslim–non-Muslim relations into institutional practices that foster interfaith tolerance. It addresses a gap in previous FKUB studies by connecting the forum’s programs with a contextual analysis of Qur’an 60:8, 10:99, 6:108, and 9:73. Using a qualitative field-study design, data were collected through semi-structured interviews with two purposively selected FKUB officials, observation of the School of Harmony program at SMAN 2 Semarang, and document review. The data were interpreted through philosophical-exegetical and sociological approaches. The findings show that FKUB Semarang operationalizes the principles of kindness and justice, freedom from religious coercion, respect for other faiths, and context-sensitive understandings of conflict through programs such as the School of Harmony, interfaith dialogue, mediation, and recommendations concerning community harmony and places of worship. The forum’s interpretation of jihad also distinguishes contemporary peacebuilding from physical warfare and emphasizes educational, social, and dialogical forms of engagement. These findings indicate that the relationship between Qur’anic interpretation and FKUB practice is not merely normative: scriptural values are translated into concrete institutional mechanisms for cultivating mutual respect, preventing tension, and sustaining peaceful coexistence in Semarang. This study contributes a locally grounded account of how Qur’anic principles can inform interfaith governance in a plural urban setting.

Abstract

Vajrayana worship employs ritual objects, gestures, mantras, and visual forms whose meanings are not always immediately understood by young devotees. This study describes changes in cognitive understanding and affective interest after a structured introduction to Vajrayana symbols among 16 young Buddhists at Vihara Dharma Jati. A quantitative pre-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design was used. Understanding and interest were treated as two distinct outcomes and were measured before and after the educational activity. The aggregate records available for this revision indicate that mean understanding scores increased from 38.90 (SD = 6.24) to 77.90 (SD = 7.70), while mean interest scores increased from 41.80 (SD = 6.48) to 83.60 (SD = 8.24). Because respondent-level data, item-level responses, and the complete statistical output were unavailable during editorial reconstruction, inferential statistics, confidence intervals, and standardized effect sizes could not be independently verified and are therefore not used as the basis for causal claims. The findings are interpreted as descriptive evidence of change following the program, not proof that the program alone caused the change. The study suggests that contextual explanations of ritual symbols may support young devotees’ understanding and situational interest, while also showing the need for stronger instruments, complete data archiving, and a controlled comparison in future research

Abstract

Education plays a crucial role in instilling an attitude of interfaith tolerance; it serves not only as a source of knowledge but also as a means to demonstrate how tolerance can be practiced within the diverse lives of students. Employing a qualitative approach combining three months of field observations, interviews with teachers and religious figures, and documentation of school activities the study analyzed data through reduction, presentation, and conclusion-drawing. The research explores how SDN Besowo 2 fosters a school environment where differences are managed effectively, resulting in a harmonious and inclusive atmosphere. Religious tolerance values are implemented at SDN Besowo 2 through activities designed to teach students the importance of respecting differences; for instance, the practice of communal prayer serves as an effective tool for building awareness and mutual understanding among students. The study reveals that the school's religious activities aim to cultivate a character of interfaith tolerance, and the application of these values in various religious practices has proven highly effective—as evidenced by the participation of the entire student body in religious parades. Beyond receiving religious instruction, students are encouraged to interact directly with peers from different faiths; this not only enriches their experiences but also fosters positive communication, thereby creating a sense of mutual respect and understanding. Education thus acts as a bridge connecting diverse religious backgrounds, helping to shape a more tolerant and harmonious generation for the future
