Abstract

Introduction: Choking in children presents a life-threatening emergency that requires parents to recognize risks and act promptly. If parents lack sufficient knowledge, they may respond too slowly, worsening outcomes. Objective: This study examined how social media–based health education and demonstration impact parental knowledge and cognitive preparedness to mitigate and manage choking incidents in children. Method: Researchers used a quantitative quasi-experimental design with a two-group pretest-posttest approach. The sample comprised 50 parents of children at Aisyiyah Bustanul Athfal 31 Kindergarten, Banjarmasin, divided into a social media education group and a demonstration education group. Result and Discussion: Researchers administered questionnaires before and after the interventions to collect data. Results showed that both the social media group (p < 0.001; r = 0.875) and the demonstration group (p < 0.001; r = 0.877) significantly improved parental knowledge and cognitive preparedness. Post-intervention outcomes for both groups remained comparable, revealing no statistically significant difference (p = 0.838). Conclusions: These findings show that both social media–based education and demonstration effectively enhance parental knowledge and cognitive preparedness for managing pediatric choking emergencies

Abstract

Introduction: Food safety in elementary schools is essential to protect the health of school-aged children. One important indicator of food contamination is the presence of Escherichia coli bacteria, which reflects inadequate hygiene and sanitation practices. Personal hygiene of food handlers and environmental sanitation conditions play a crucial role in determining the microbiological safety of snack foods sold in schools. Objective: This study aimed to analyze factors associated with the presence of Escherichia coli in snack foods sold at elementary schools in Kota Baru District in 2025. Methods: This study employed a quantitative research design with a cross-sectional approach involving 45 food handlers. Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Chi-square test. Results and discussion: Microbiological examination showed that 9 food samples (20.0%) were contaminated with Escherichia coli. Most food handlers demonstrated poor personal hygiene (66.7%) and inadequate environmental sanitation (71.1%). Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between personal hygiene and the presence of Escherichia coli (p = 0.020), as well as between environmental sanitation and bacterial contamination (p = 0.042). Better hygiene practices and adequate sanitation were associated with lower contamination risk. Conclusion: Personal hygiene of food handlers and environmental sanitation are significantly associated with Escherichia coli contamination.

Abstract

Introduction: Neonatal asphyxia—defined as failure to establish adequate breathing at birth—remains a major cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality, especially in developing countries. Prolonged labour and abnormal gestational age can impair placental oxygen transfer and heighten asphyxia risk. Objective: To examine the association between prolonged labour, gestational age, and neonatal asphyxia among newborns treated in the Perinatology Unit of Guido Valadares National Hospital. Method: A cross-sectional correlational study involved 85 mother–infant pairs selected purposively from 110 admissions in 2025. Prolonged labour and gestational age were independent variables; neonatal asphyxia was the outcome. Data were gathered via structured questionnaire and medical records, then analysed with multinomial regression (α = 0.05). Results and Discussion: Prolonged labour showed a significant independent association with asphyxia (p = 0.001), whereas gestational age alone did not (p = 0.389). Simultaneous analysis demonstrated that both variables together were significantly related to asphyxia incidence (p = 0.005). Conclusion: Prolonged labour is the principal contributor to neonatal asphyxia, and its combined effect with gestational age further elevates risk. Rigorous intrapartum monitoring and timely obstetric intervention are essential to improve neonatal outcomes
