Abstract

This study aims to explain the forms of social change and shifts in belief systems that occur within the Dayak Ma’amp community, as well as their relationship to the implementation of the Babukokng ritual and the continuity of the Katipak Dance as one of the sacred cultural elements. The focus of the research is directed toward identifying the forms of social and belief changes within the Dayak Ma’amp community, particularly those related to the practice of Babukokng and the preservation of the Katipak Dance. The study employs a qualitative approach with technique triangulation, which involves comparing data derived from interviews, observations, and document studies. Anthropological and historical approaches are used to understand how social and belief changes unfold within the Ma’amp community. The findings indicate that social change in the Ma’amp community can be seen through the shift from traditional customary leadership to a dual system involving village governance, the transition of livelihoods toward a monetary economy, and the simplification of the duration and procedures of the Babukokng ritual. The community’s belief system has also shifted due to the influence of formal religions, which have weakened traditional beliefs in spirits and spiritual elements, resulting in the modification or removal of certain ritual stages. The Katipak Dance, which was once strictly sacred, has undergone desanctification and can now be performed in public cultural events as an effort toward preservation. Overall, these changes demonstrate that the Ma’amp community is able to adapt to modern developments while simultaneously facing challenges in cultural regeneration if deliberate preservation efforts are not implemented.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the symbolic meanings in the initial, core, and final stages of the mande' bedel keraja' ritual at the Pakunegara Palace. The mande' bedel keraja' is an annual ritual of bathing the bedel', the heirloom weapon of the Tayan Palace, serving as a protective rite (tolak bala) to ward off disasters and safeguard the kingdom from calamities such as droughts and disease outbreaks. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, involving two main informants and two supporting informants. Data analysis included reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the initial stage involves parading the bedel' to Ujung Tanjung, accompanied by symbolic objects such as the bedel', ketubong drum, tepa, candles, umbrella, yellow scarf, and flags of yellow, white, red, and black. The core stage includes the mengkasai and melangir rituals, symbolized by rice, turmeric, kaffir lime, and melangir. The tepung tawar ceremony uses symbolic materials such as rice, jeringau (sweet flag), kencur (aromatic ginger), sabang hijau, goat’s foot leaves, ganda rusa, and puring. The final stage involves rinsing the bedel’, where the water symbolizes healing and fertility for a bountiful harvest. The ketupat war ritual represents resistance against misfortune and gratitude for agricultural abundance.

Abstract

This study aims to critically analyze the contribution of platform economy jobs to the income and economic stability of gig workers, examine the influence of legal status on access to social security, and assess the implications of work flexibility on the welfare of gig workers in Pontianak City. The growing phenomenon of the gig economy through platforms such as Gojek, Grab, Maxim, and ShopeeFood has opened up job opportunities for the community, but on the other hand, it has created unstable forms of employment with minimal legal protection. This study uses a qualitative approach by combining legal and sociological analysis. Primary data was obtained through in-depth interviews with drivers, couriers, labor unions, and officials from the Pontianak City Manpower Office. Secondary data was collected from labor regulations, official reports, and academic literature related to the platform economy. The results show that gig work contributes significantly to income, but is unstable due to long working hours, account performance, customer ratings, and non-transparent application algorithms. The status of workers as “partners” means that they have no social security, such as BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (Employment Social Security) and BPJS Kesehatan (Health Social Security), which must be borne entirely by the workers themselves. Furthermore, claims of work flexibility are proven to be illusory because workers are required to remain active to avoid a decline in orders ("anyep"). Job risks, including operational costs, accidents, and application penalties, are entirely borne by the workers. These findings emphasize the need for new, more inclusive policies to ensure legal and social protection for gig workers in Pontianak City.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the interest of eleventh-grade Accounting students at SMKN 3 Pontianak in continuing their education to the Economics Education Study Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP), Tanjungpura University, and to identify supporting and inhibiting factors influencing such interest. The research employed a quantitative approach with a survey method. A total sample of 105 students was randomly selected from the overall population of 141 students. Data were collected using a Likert-scale questionnaire consisting of seven indicators of interest: enjoyment, desire, attention, need, expectation, encouragement, and willingness. The findings revealed that students’ interest in pursuing higher education in the Economics Education Study Program remains relatively low, with only 5.7% categorized as very high, 9.5% high, 19% moderate, 48.6% low, and 17.1% very low. Supporting factors included curiosity and external influences such as teachers and alumni, which were generally rated high to very high. In contrast, inhibiting factors such as attention, motivation, needs, enthusiasm, emotions, family upbringing, economic conditions, and peer influence were predominantly rated low to very low. These results are expected to provide valuable input for schools, parents, and universities to develop strategies that can foster students’ interest in continuing their education, particularly in the Economics Education Study Program at FKIP Tanjungpura University.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors that cause imitative behavior among Korean drama fans at the Ratu Sepudak Female Student Dormitory in Pontianak City. The phenomenon of imitating Korean culture, particularly through Korean dramas, is increasingly prevalent among teenagers and female students. This study uses a qualitative research method. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with four informants selected based on the criteria of intensity of watching Korean dramas and active involvement in Korean culture. The results of the study show that there are four main factors that influence imitative behavior, namely: (1) personal interest, which is related to interest in fashion, makeup, and character traits; (2) emotional needs, where Korean dramas become an escape when experiencing stress or boredom; (3) the influence of social media, which reinforces interest in Korean culture and encourages consumerism of Korean products; and (4) the social environment, especially friends in the dormitory who reinforce imitative behavior collectively. These four factors interact and contribute to shaping the informants' lifestyle, daily behavior, and adopted values. This study is expected to provide insight for academics, dormitory managers, and students regarding the dynamics of imitating foreign popular culture, as well as serve as a consideration in developing a selective and critical attitude in consuming foreign culture.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the forms and roles of social solidarity within the Beuma tradition practiced by the Dayak Kebahan community in Entogong Village, Kayan Hulu District, Sintang Regency. The Beuma tradition, a traditional farming system carried out collectively (berari-ari), reflects the social and cultural values that have been passed down from generation to generation. It not only serves as a means of fulfilling livelihood needs but also strengthens communal bonds and preserves ancestral heritage. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method to obtain an in-depth understanding of the Beuma tradition. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and documentation involving traditional leaders and community members who actively participate in Beuma. The data were analyzed through data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing to identify patterns of social interaction and solidarity among participants. The results indicate that the Beuma tradition embodies strong social solidarity based on shared values, cooperation, and mutual assistance among community members. Social cohesion is maintained through collective participation in every stage of Beuma, adherence to customary norms, and shared experiences that create emotional bonds and a sense of togetherness. These elements form both mechanical and organic solidarity within the community. The Beuma tradition thus functions not only as an agricultural activity but also as a social system that sustains cultural identity and reinforces harmony amid modernization

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the form of mechanical solidarity within the Honda Astrea Rider Club (HARC) community in Singkawang through the perspective of Émile Durkheim. The research employed a descriptive qualitative method with four informants selected using purposive sampling, supported by interviews, observations, and documentation. The findings indicate that mechanical solidarity in HARC is manifested through three main aspects: first, collective consciousness in the form of shared values of togetherness, kinship, and mutual assistance, which shape the group’s identity; second, normative consensus reflected in members’ adherence to community rules, maintained by the role of the leader and reinforced by social sanctions; and third, a simple division of labor without role specialization, where all members participate equally based on the principle of mutual cooperation. These findings affirm that mechanical solidarity continues to exist in modern communities built on shared interests and common values, while also contributing to sociological studies on the relevance of Durkheim’s theory in contemporary contexts and opening opportunities for further research on the potential shift from mechanical to organic solidarity within motorcycle communities.
