Abstract

Soybean is becoming a prominent agricultural industry due to its versatility of use as inputs for different industrial sectors. Soybean products have a high value and are profitable since its huge supply and wide demand. The soybean economic value does belong to the commercial use of its joint products, soybean meal, and soybean oil. Joint product theory assumes the price of soybeans can be represented as a weighted average of returns from soybean meal and soybean oil less than the processing margin. This indicates there are price relationships between soybean as a raw product towards its meal and oil through crush processing. Therefore, the objective of this research is to investigate the price transmission between these three products and analyzed factors that influencing them. Monthly time series data in respect of international prices were obtained. Augmented Dickey-Fuller (ADF) test and the Johansen cointegration technique were utilized to test the stationarity and the long-run relationship between three variables respectively. The result indicates the existence of one cointegrating long-run equilibrium relationship between these variables. The Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) estimates revealed that soybean price is the only one that reacts to correct equilibrium since oil and meal have huge markets. Abstract

To understand the recent development and to anticipate the future directions and trends of agricultural trade between Germany and Indonesia, this study analyzed the data of agricultural trade between the Germany and Indonesia. The major agricultural commodities that are traded between those countries are crude palm oil (CPO) and skimmed milk powder (SMP). There were public policies and environmentalist group movements that may have influenced the agricultural trade volumes within the period. This study identified those two factors. This study also identified possible future directions and trends of agricultural trade between the two countries. It analyzed the data ranged from 2001 to 2018, which were obtained from ITC Trade Map and analyzed using multiple regression models. The findings were in 2001-2018, the CPO and SMP trade between those countries showed an upward trend. However, it was predicted in the future that the public policies and environmentalist group movements might cause the agricultural trade to decrease. The world production quantity of CPO and the production of CPO in Indonesia had a significant effect on the German import from Indonesia, whereas the production quantity of milk in Indonesia and the GDP of Indonesia had a significant impact on the German export to Indonesia. The future directions and trend of German CPO import from Indonesia and German SMP export to Indonesia show an increase both for quantity and value. This agricultural investment could be an attractive personal asset, too. But, no information yet about the complete characteristics of agricultural projects that fetching the people's participation to invest. Hence, the aim of this research is to find out the factors that influence people's participation in agricultural business investment with crowdfunding schemes. The quantitative data collected from 468 agricultural projects held by agricultural business startup PT. XYZ was analyzed. The six characteristics of the project are role as independents factors. They were project types (loans and profit sharing), project fields (agriculture, livestock, and fisheries), project risk (low, moderate, and high), project duration, the amount of capital needed and profit assumption. All the factors have been analyzed by a multiple regression model to estimate the number of investors. The results showed that the number of crowdfunding agriculture-based projects investor can be modeled by dummy regression. The longer project duration will decrease the number of investors by 0.577 people. The higher risk of the project will lower the number of investors. Based on the projects field, the most interesting projects are the livestock project, followed by agriculture and the last is the fisheries project. Overall, the project period, project risk and project field are the factors that influence people's participation in agricultural business investment with crowdfunding schemes. In the future, crowdfunding livestock projects with a short implementation period (around 3 months), and low risk can be sought so that more people participate in becoming investors. Abstract

The application of teat dipping to control subclinical mastitis especially in small dairy farms is important; however, the application needs additional activity that has an impact on labor usage. This paper aimed to describe the labor usage to apply teat dipping for subclinical mastitis control in the small dairy farms. The convenience sampling techniques applied to select 34 farmers in Bogor as the respondents. Workload analysis and labor productivity were used in examining the application of dot dipping in various small dairy farms in Bogor City to control subclinical mastitis. This study was based on two types of experiments in small dairy farms in Bogor, West Java, namely teat dipping and without teat dipping. The findings show that the application of teat dipping had an impact on three things, namely an increase in labor usage and its workload, an increase in labor productivity and a decrease in the number of subclinical mastitis prevalence. This study concluded that labor was an important factor to control subclinical mastitis in small dairy farms. An increase in labor productivity had an impact on reducing the costs of mastitis treatment and finally increase farmer’s income. Abstract

Milk is an essential commodity because the Government of Indonesia aimed to increase domestic milk production up to 50% by 2020. At the present, domestic milk production in Indonesia is only able to fulfill 20% of national milk demand. East Java and West Java Provinces are the main producers of milk in Indonesia. The objective of this study was to compare dairy farming management and business model between East Java and West Java, Indonesia. This study employed descriptive statistical and quantitative analyses. The dairy farming management questionnaire survey was conducted in May-July 2016 and the dairy business model survey was conducted in October-November 2018. There were no significant differences in dairy farming activities between farmers in Lembang and Malang whereas the average number of lactating cows is 5 and 3 heads, respectively. Farmers received farm gate price of Rp4,622 per liter in Lembang and Rp4,535 per liter in Malang. Based on net return over cash variable cost, farmers in Malang and Lembang earned around 20 percent from the milk price. There were six inclusive business models (IBMs) identified between smallholder farmers, cooperatives, and private companies with different characteristics have been implemented in East Java and West Java. It is suggested that cooperative improves its role in the integrated agribusiness system in order to improve the bargaining position of dairy farmers as well as in terms of cost-efficiency. The strategies and policies should be implemented to support development of sustainable, profitable and smallholder-inclusive dairy supply chains in East Java and West Java. Abstract

Prices of maize and soybean fluctuated significantly at both producer and consumer levels in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the pricing of maize and soybean at the consumer level by employing the vector error correction model and to analyze the market behavior in determining consumer prices by using the game theory. The results show that maize prices at the consumer level are positively influenced by producer price, wholesale price, as well as gasoline price shocks and are also negatively affected by supply shocks. Soybean prices at the consumer level are negatively influenced by producer price shocks and are positively affected by wholesale price shocks. Shocks in terms of supply result in the fluctuating prices received by the consumers. It is due to the dominant pricing strategy, which is through collusion performed by the maize and soybean retailers. Some market efficiencies are encouraged to reach more stabilized prices. Keywords: game theory, maize, soybean, market efficiency

Abstract

Seaweed is one of the main aquaculture products which has high economic value and serves as strategic business opportunities. Seaweed farming becomes the main livelihood for people in Takalar Regency, so it is necessary to improve the working quality of seaweed farmers through the development of entrepreneurial behavior as a new variable in improving the performance of seaweed business. This research is intended to examine the effects of the environment on farmers’ entrepreneurial behavior and the effects of entrepreneurial behavior on seaweed business performance. This research takes place in two different production districts, which are Mangarabombang district and Mappakasunggu district, with 150 respondents of seaweed farmers conducted by simple random sampling. The data analysis method used in this research is the Structural Equation Model (SEM) using AMOS 23 software. The result shows that there are insignificant positive impacts of the internal environment on farmers’ entrepreneurial behavior as the value of t-statistic is 1.61 < 1.96, while there are significant positive impacts of the external environment on farmers’ entrepreneurial behavior with the coefficient value of 0.58 and t-statistic of 2.50. The entrepreneurial behavior is found to give significant and positive impacts towards farm performance with the coefficient value if 0.41 and t-statistic of 5.26 > 1.96. It shows that the development of farmers’ entrepreneurial behavior will improve the seaweed business performance in Takalar Regency.
