Abstract

Social media platform X has become a major space where users express emotional responses to global events. Previous studies on expressive speech acts on X have primarily examined local political figures or general social issues, whereas Arabic-language comments on the official account of a global religious-political figure following the figure's death remain underexplored. This study aims to identify the types and functions of expressive illocutionary speech acts in Arabic-language comments posted on the @ar_khamenei X account following the death of Ali Khamenei. A qualitative descriptive approach employing non-participant observation (Simak Bebas Libat Cakap) was used. The analysis was based on Searle's (1979) theory of expressive speech acts and Leech's (1983) classification of illocutionary functions. The data comprised 78 Arabic-language comments collected from a post published on 1 March 2026. The findings revealed that praying was the most dominant speech act (41 instances; 35 imprecatory prayers and 6 beneficent prayers), followed by insulting (19), thanking God (8), condoling (7), congratulating (2), and blaming (1). The conflictive function predominated (65 instances), while the convivial function occurred in 13 instances; no competitive or collaborative functions were identified. These findings demonstrate that Arabic digital discourse reflects users' sociopolitical, ideological, and religious orientations.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between language and social identity among Arabic speakers through a sociolinguistic approach. The research is qualitative and descriptive in nature, employing a case study approach. The research subjects consist of Arabic speakers from various social backgrounds, ages, and educational levels, while the object of the study is the use of Arabic, both fusha and local dialects, in formal and informal contexts. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation of social interactions, and analyzed using thematic and interpretative techniques to identify patterns of language use and their relationship to social identity formation. The findings reveal that Arabic speakers adjust their language variety according to the communication context, interaction goals, and social status, making language a dynamic medium for negotiating social identity. Fusha is used in formal and institutional contexts to convey authority and legitimacy, whereas local dialects are employed in everyday interactions to foster solidarity and social closeness. These results confirm that language is not merely a system of communication but a social practice that reflects social structures and cultural values. The implications of this study highlight the importance of understanding the relationship between language and social identity in Arabic language teaching, enabling more contextual, adaptive, and effective intercultural communication competence.

Abstract

The problem in this research lies in the Arabic language test questions at MTsN 6 Lima Puluh Kota, which have not yet been analyzed. This study aims to determine the quality of Arabic language test items for Grade VIII at MTsN 6 Lima Puluh Kota based on validity, reliability, difficulty level, discriminating power, and distractor effectiveness. The research employs a descriptive quantitative approach. The participants are students from two eighth-grade classes, 8¹ and 8², totaling 63 students. Data were collected through documentation and observation. The data analysis techniques are based on validity, reliability, difficulty level, discriminating power, and distractor effectiveness using Microsoft Excel. The results of the analysis of 30 test items show that 29 items (97%) have good validity, while one item (3%) is invalid. The reliability index is 0.897, indicating high reliability. Regarding the difficulty level, 2 items (7%) are classified as easy, 26 items (86%) as moderate, and 2 items (7%) as difficult. The discriminating power analysis shows that 1 item (3%) needs improvement, 4 items (13%) are fair, 14 items (54%) are good, and 9 items (30%) are very good. In terms of distractor effectiveness, 5 items (13%) are less effective and need revision, while 25 items (87%) are effective and suitable for use. It can be concluded that the Arabic test items for Grade VIII at MTsN 6 Lima Puluh Kota are of fairly good quality and can be reused.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of a drama project based on the PAIKEM learning model in Muhadatsah instruction, evaluate its effectiveness in improving students' Maharah al-Kalam (Arabic speaking skills), and identify the supporting and inhibiting factors affecting its implementation in Class XI.2 of Madrasah Aliyah Ummul Mukminin Makassar. This study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design conducted in two cycles. Data were collected through observation, tests, and documentation. The findings indicate that the implementation of the PAIKEM-based drama project created a more active, communicative, and enjoyable learning environment while significantly improving students' Maharah al-Kalam. The students' mean score increased from 78 in the pre-cycle to 81 in Cycle I and 89 in Cycle II. Likewise, the percentage of classical learning mastery improved from 33% in the pre-cycle to 70% in Cycle I and reached 93.9% in Cycle II. The most notable improvement was observed in the paralinguistic aspects of speaking, particularly students' self-confidence, intonation, and facial expressions when communicating in Arabic. The successful implementation of the drama project was supported by students' enthusiasm, effective group collaboration, and the use of engaging instructional media. However, differences in students' Arabic language proficiency and limited instructional time remained the main challenges during the implementation. In conclusion, the implementation of the PAIKEM-based drama project was effective in improving students' Maharah al-Kalam while also enhancing their participation, confidence, and willingness to communicate orally in Arabic.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Reading (mahārat al-qirā’ah) is the linguistic skill through which learners of Arabic as a foreign language gain the widest access to knowledge, yet it remains one of the most difficult competencies to develop because it demands the simultaneous coordination of decoding, vocabulary knowledge, and higher-order comprehension. This study examines the effectiveness of integrating three complementary reading strategies skimming, scanning, and close reading within Arabic reading instruction. Using a systematic literature review guided by the PRISMA protocol, the study synthesised twenty-two peer-reviewed articles published between 2021 and 2026 in reputable indexed journals addressing reading-strategy instruction in second- and foreign-language settings, with particular attention to Arabic. The findings indicate that skimming and scanning reliably improve reading speed and the efficient location of information, that close reading deepens inferential and critical comprehension, and that the greatest gains occur when the three strategies are taught as a sequenced, integrated repertoire rather than in isolation. In Arabic instruction specifically, integration helps learners manage the language’s morphological density, unvowelled script, and register variation, while vocabulary knowledge and metacognitive awareness function as decisive mediating factors. The review concludes that an explicitly modelled, gradually released three-strategy sequence offers a coherent pedagogical framework for Arabic reading instruction and identifies the need for controlled experimental studies within Arabic classrooms to strengthen the evidence base.
