In this 4.0 era, the use of English as a mean of communications playing a vital role to work in many parts such as technology, education, communication and many others. It is true that not all people can communicate in English fluently and clearly. Luckily, some people or students especially, use bilingualism to study or learn English. Many of them think by using bilingualism they still can interact or communicate by using English as a mean of interaction. Focus of this research was to find out how the bilingualism improve the English student ability. This research used a descriptive qualitative research. Data were collected by using questionnaire and interview guideline. Data were analyzed by using the content analysis and the theory used was proposed by Hoffman 1991. Population of the research was all of students of English for mathematics consisting 35 students. This research used total sampling for instrument using questionnaire and used purposive sampling for the semi-structure interview. The research shows that bilingualism occur in the classroom interaction such as talking about particular topic, quoting somebody else, being emphatic about something, interjection, repetition used for clarification, expressing a group of identity and intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor. From the analysis, it is seen that mostly bilingualism used by the students to study about particular topics such as term, theme and content. The least used by student is on the intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor because the students always think that what the people say are true and they don’t know how to express the clarification in English. However, for the English learning, bilingualism has already helped both the lecturers and students to interact and communicate about various topics. It is a good start to introduce English as the foreign language In Indonesian Higher Education where English is still considered as the foreign language.

Abstract

The utilization of coding within advertising discourse is an imperative means of communication, effectively demonstrating the wide array of linguistic frameworks employed in promotional campaigns. The deliberate inclusion of diverse languages in advertisements serves the dual purpose of capturing attention and safeguarding regional languages by utilizing advertising platforms to uphold and enhance their significance. The objective of this study is to analyse instances of code switching and code mixing in compilation videos of food and beverage advertisements uploaded by Rofif Satria on the YouTube Satria Channel account.  The utilization of a qualitative methodology employing descriptive techniques in data collection entails the process of observation and subsequent documentation through note-taking. The researcher carefully examines each advertising video, meticulously documenting both the spoken and written narratives conveyed within them. The instances of code-switching and code-mixing in the compilation videos are subsequently identified, annotated, and documented. The data that has been gathered is organized and classified according to its type, as well as the specific forms of code-switching and code-mixing that are present. The research findings indicate instances of code-switching and code-mixing, which encompass both internal and external forms. These include the insertion of words, phrases, clauses, and basters. The contextualization of data, including words, phrases, and clauses, is integral to the interpretation within the discourse of advertising.

Abstract

The interest in pencak silat is waning, evident in the current generation's preference for kempo, karate, and taekwondo. However, pencak silat holds significant societal value, fostering a heightened sense of concern for others. This study aims to explore and analyze the philosophical discourse of pencak silat as a fundamental element of character education and social cohesion in society. The research methodology adopted is a literature study, involving a thorough search and review of various works on pencak silat, encompassing art, culture, and aesthetics, as well as its role in strengthening social bonds among teachers, students, and their peers. The findings of this study emphasize that pencak silat is a valuable cultural heritage of Indonesia's ancestors, deserving preservation and conservation as it serves as a cornerstone of character education, encompassing nine core values. These character values are deeply ingrained within pencak silat, making it an effective platform for fostering personal growth and moral development. Through pencak silat, social bonds are fortified, leading to enhanced camaraderie and harmonious relationships among different community groups. Two essential aspects that contribute to strengthening social ties in pencak silat are the sense of brotherhood among practitioners and the cultivation of strong spiritual values that resonate within every student engaged in pencak silat training.

Abstract

The Educational Profession course is crucial to teacher training, however transitioning to independent learning curricula is difficult. Teaching resources that fit the changing educational landscape are a big challenge. This study proposes incorporating cultural discourse into educational professional teaching resources to meet independent learning curricular requirements. To create these innovative instructional resources, a 4-D development model—define, design, develop, and disseminate—was painstakingly followed. The study focused on Padang's acclaimed PGRI University of West Sumatra's teachers and students. Observation, interviews, and testing collected data. Field tests showed the training materials were practical and effective. This study found: First, the teaching materials perfectly matched student needs. Second, the design phase produced useful learning aids to supplement the teaching content. Finally, the development phase produced a comprehensive integration of cultural discourse-based teaching materials for the Education Profession course, anchored by a Discourse Analysis Approach, displaying excellent validity. Field experiments showed promising results: The integrated learning approach's success and students' responses confirmed the teaching materials' usefulness. Students' better learning outcomes showed the instructional materials' usefulness, even though lecturers' comprehension and application varied. Cultural dialogue in educational professional teaching materials enhances learning and creates a more inclusive and engaging educational environment, according to the findings. The research recommends continual adaptation and improvement of teaching approaches to ensure lasting educational impact, as success depended on learning process and demographic aspects. In conclusion, this research is a pioneering endeavour to improve the Educational Profession course through cultural discourse, bridging the gap between traditional teaching methods and independent learning pedagogies. The study emphasizes the necessity of culturally responsive and effective learning ecosystems, setting a precedent for future curriculum design and educational practises.

Abstract

Since the Great Migration in 1910, millions of African-Americans moved to Northern, Western, and Midwestern cities, prompting White flight to the suburbs in search of a racially homogeneous utopia. These suburban areas, rooted in discrimination, have a history of systemic racism. Little Fires Everywhere (2020), a Hulu mini-series based on Celeste Ng’s novel, explores these dynamics in a Midwestern suburb. Previous studies have linked race and class to motherhood in the series, revealing that racism often intertwines with structural disparities between ethnic groups. This paper examines the mother-daughter conflicts in Little Fires Everywhere, arguing that these conflicts arise not only from racial structures but also from the specific societal norms of suburban life. Using Fairclough’s (1989) three-dimensional Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) model, this study uncovers the ideologies embedded in dialogue, the power relations produced through language, and how these elements shape relationships. The analysis reveals that racial identities and social class significantly impact mother-daughter dynamics. The Richardsons’ conservative, upper-class status fosters a superficial and strained relationship, while the Warrens’ financial struggles lead to dissatisfaction and dishonesty. The study highlights how language in the series reflects and reinforces power dynamics, influencing the characters’ relationships.
