Abstract

Medical students represent a population highly vulnerable to intense academic pressure which can clinically trigger or exacerbate sensory perception disorders such as subjective tinnitus. This study explores the lived experience dynamics of medical students dealing with subjective tinnitus amidst academic pressure through a descriptive phenomenological approach. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews with eight medical students as participants selected via purposive sampling. Thematic analysis techniques were used to process the data, successfully identifying four primary dynamics. These dynamics include tinnitus as a cognitive distraction in study concentration, an increase in tinnitus intensity during block exam periods, the emergence of somatic impacts such as chronic sleep disturbances, and self-coping efforts through sound distraction with declining effectiveness during peak stress levels. These results emphasize that tinnitus in medical students serves as a physical indicator of psychological distress. Educational institutions should provide integrated mental health support systems to help students manage the impacts of tinnitus and academic pressure more comprehensively.

Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious communicable disease that remains a public health problem, including in Bengkulu City. One behavioral factor suspected to contribute to the incidence of pulmonary TB is smoking behavior. This study aimed to examine the association between smoking behavior and the occurrence of pulmonary TB among active smokers at Telaga Dewa Community Health Center, Bengkulu City, in 2025.This study employed a quantitative design with a case–control approach. The study population comprised all visitors aged over 15 years registered at Telaga Dewa Community Health Center, Bengkulu City. A total of 66 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. The research instruments included a smoking behavior questionnaire and data on pulmonary TB incidence based on medical diagnoses. Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate analyses, with the Chi-square test applied at a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that the majority of respondents exhibited heavy smoking behavior (33.3%), and more than half of the respondents had pulmonary TB (54.5%). The Chi-square test yielded a p-value of 0.021 (≤ 0.05), indicating a statistically significant association between smoking behavior and the incidence of pulmonary TB among active smokers at Telaga Dewa Community Health Center, Bengkulu City. The study concludes that there is a significant relationship between smoking behavior and the occurrence of pulmonary TB among active smokers. It is recommended that the community health center strengthen health education regarding the dangers of smoking and implement pulmonary TB prevention efforts through the promotion of healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Abstract

Pendap is one of many traditional foods from Bengkulu, more specifically from South Bengkulu Regency. As a traditional food that has long been enjoyed by the people of South Bengkulu, pendap can now be easily found in several locations in Bengkulu City, the capital of Bengkulu Province. However, like many other souvenirs that are popular with tourists visiting Bengkulu, pendap is prone to spoilage during long-distance travel. The characteristics of pendap, which is made from wet ingredients, cause it to spoil easily during long journeys. This study aims to analyze packaging techniques that can extend the shelf life of pendap as a specialty food of South Bengkulu that is widely sold in Bengkulu City. The treatments tested in this study included packaging types consisting of polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE), and aluminum polypropylene (Al-PP) plastic, using vacuum and non-vacuum packaging techniques. The following tests were conducted: pH analysis, moisture content analysis, total plate count (TPC) analysis, and organoleptic testing. The results of the study showed that packaging techniques and packaging types greatly affect the shelf life of pendap. It was found that among the various packaging types and packaging techniques tested in the study, the vacuum technique with polyethylene (PE) plastic packaging provided a longer shelf life than the others, with a shelf life of 6 days.

Abstract

According to WHO data in 2022, there were 2.3 million cases and 670,000 deaths worldwide; GLOBOCAN 2024 recorded breast cancer as the most common cancer (11.7%), with 685,000 deaths. In Indonesia, 65,858 new cases were recorded, with an incidence rate of 42.1 and a mortality rate of 17 per 100,000 population, and this rate is expected to increase until 2030. In Bengkulu, in 2025, Bengkulu City recorded 23 cases (aged 30–59 years), followed by Kepahiang with 22 cases, and North Bengkulu with 21 cases. This study aims to determine the relationship between the availability of information sources and peer support with BSE behavior for early breast cancer detection among 10th and 11th grade female students at SMAN 01 Bengkulu City in 2025. This study used quantitative methods with a cross-sectional design. The study sample size was 80 respondents, drawn from a total population of 400 individuals, based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data were collected using a questionnaire and analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Chi-square test. The results showed that the majority of respondents had readily available information sources (41 respondents), supported peer support (31 respondents), and performed BSE well (26 respondents). Statistical tests showed a significant relationship between the availability of information sources and BSE behavior (p-value = 0.007) and a significant relationship between peer support and BSE behavior (p-value = 0.004). The researchers recommend that schools provide more visual informational media, such as posters or leaflets, about BSE steps in strategic areas such as the school health center (UKS) or the school bulletin board. Schools can collaborate with local community health centers (Puskesmas) to conduct "Peer Counselor" training so that female students have the skills to provide appropriate informational and emotional support to their peers..

Abstract

Adolescents are an age group vulnerable to emotional disorders due to physical, psychological, and social changes (WHO, 2020). One factor suspected of contributing to the emergence of emotional disorders in adolescents is online gaming addiction. Excessive online gaming use can affect emotional regulation, increase anxiety, and impact behavior and academic achievement. This study aims to determine the relationship between online gaming addiction and emotional disorders in adolescents at SMA Negeri 1 Bengkulu City in 2025. This study used an analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population was all students at SMA Negeri 1 Bengkulu City, with a sample size of 90 respondents drawn using a purposive sampling technique. The research instruments were an online gaming addiction questionnaire and an emotional disorders questionnaire. Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate methods, using the Chi-Square statistical test at a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that the majority of respondents had a level of online gaming addiction, with frequencies ranging from 0 = ≤40%, 1 = 41-70%, and 2 = ≥71%. Respondents also experienced emotional disturbances with a frequency of 0 = Normal (0-16), 1 = Borderline (17-33), 2 = Abnormal (34-50). The results of the Chi-Square statistical test showed a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between online gaming addiction and emotional disturbances in adolescents. Adolescents with high levels of online gaming addiction had a greater risk of experiencing emotional disturbances than adolescents with low levels of addiction. The conclusion of this study is that there is a significant relationship between online gaming addiction and emotional disturbances in adolescents at SMA Negeri 1 Kota Bengkulu in 2025. An active role is needed for schools, families, and health professionals in preventing and controlling online gaming use to maintain adolescents' emotional health.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the role of the Serawai language as a means of interpersonal communication in Tanjung Menang Village, Seginim District, South Bengkulu Regency. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method, with data collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The informants consisted of the village head, traditional leader, community members, and a university student selected using purposive sampling. Data analysis was conducted through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing based on Joseph A. DeVito’s interpersonal communication theory, which includes openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality. The findings indicate that the Serawai language is still actively used in family communication, traditional ceremonies, village meetings, and daily social interactions. The use of the Serawai language supports the creation of communication that is more open, empathetic, supportive, positive, and equal. It also functions as a cultural identity and social binder that strengthens relationships among community members. However, there is a tendency of decreasing use among younger generations due to modernization and the dominance of the Indonesian language. Therefore, collective efforts are needed to preserve the Serawai language as a cultural heritage and an effective means of interpersonal communication within the community.

Abstract

In 2024, the DPT-HB-Hib booster immunization coverage was 75.88% and the Measles/MR2 booster immunization coverage was 81.62%, with 76% of children receiving complete booster immunizations. Compared to the government's target of 100% booster immunization coverage for children under five, this achievement remains relatively low, falling short of the national target. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between maternal knowledge and the completeness of DPT-HB-Hib and Measles-Rubella booster immunizations among children under five in the Jembatan Kecil Community Health Center (Puskesmas) working area in Bengkulu City in 2026. The research method used was descriptive research with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used purposive sampling with a population of 380 toddlers calculated using the Slovin formula, resulting in a sample size of 80 toddlers in the Jembatan Kecil Community Health Center Work Area, Bengkulu City, in 2026. Univariate analysis results showed that almost half of the respondents (45%) had sufficient knowledge, and the majority (63.7%) had completed the DPT-HB-Hib booster immunization. Bivariate analysis results showed a relationship between maternal knowledge and the completeness of the DPT-HB-Hib booster immunization and measles-rubella booster immunization in toddlers, with a p-value of 0.000. It can be concluded that maternal knowledge is associated with the completeness of the DPT-HB-Hib booster immunization and measles-rubella booster immunization in toddlers in the Jembatan Kecil Community Health Center Work Area, Bengkulu City, in 2026. The results of this study are expected to improve education and monitoring of booster immunizations to optimize DPT-HB-Hib and measles-rubella booster immunization coverage in toddlers.

Abstract

Dysmenorrhea is menstrual pain frequently experienced by adolescent girls and impacts concentration, school attendance, and quality of life. One psychological factor contributing to dysmenorrhea is stress levels. Stress can affect reproductive hormone balance, thereby worsening menstrual pain. This study aimed to determine the relationship between stress levels and dysmenorrhea among adolescent girls at SMAN 1 Bengkulu City in 2025. This study used quantitative analytical methods with a cross-sectional design. Data were collected by distributing questionnaires to 80 respondents, all female adolescents in grades 10 and 11 at SMAN 1 Bengkulu City. The sampling technique used purposive sampling. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods using the Chi-Square test.. The results showed that almost all respondents experienced moderate stress (37.5%) and moderate dysmenorrhea (36.3%). The results of the Chi-Square test obtained a p-value (0.022) smaller than the ∝ value (0.05), so H0 is rejected and Ha is accepted, which means that statistically there is a significant relationship between stress levels and the incidence of dysmenorrhea in adolescent girls at DMAN 1 Bengkulu City in 2025.. Based on the results of the study, it is recommended that schools and health workers provide education on stress management and reproductive health as an effort to prevent and treat dysmenorrhea in adolescent girls.
