Abstract

This study explores the impact of modernization in Indonesia on the genealogy of Qur’anic exegesis (tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-Karīm), understood as the historical transmission, intellectual lineage, and transformation of interpretive methods and orientations across generations of Indonesian Muslim scholars. Employing a qualitative, library-based approach, this research analyzes major Indonesian Qur’anic commentaries (kutub al-tafsīr) to identify shifts in interpretive methodology and thematic emphasis. The findings indicate that the modernization of Qur’anic exegesis in Indonesia is characterized by three main features: (1) the reinterpretation of Qur’anic verses related to science (al-‘ilm) and rational inquiry (al-‘aql), (2) a strong emphasis on social and societal issues (al-masā’il al-ijtimā‘iyyah), and (3) the systematic use of the Indonesian language as a medium of interpretation. These elements collectively demonstrate a shift toward a more contextual, socially responsive, and accessible model of Qur’anic interpretation. This study provides a foundation for the development of contemporary Indonesian exegesis by outlining a locally grounded methodological framework that integrates modernist hermeneutics with classical Islamic scholarship, offering a model of interpretation that remains rooted in tradition while responding effectively to present-day religious and social challenges.

Abstract

This article aims to examine the status of women in Islam by analyzing verses of the Qur’an through a thematic (Maudhu’i) exegetical approach, as well as to compare the interpretations of the female exegete Zainab al-Ghazali in Nazarāt fī kitābillah and the contemporary exegete Wahbah az -Zuhaili in Tafsīr al-Munīr. This study offers a new contribution through a comparative approach between female and male exegetes regarding verses pertaining to women in the Qur’an. The method used is descriptive qualitative with a library research approach. Primary data comes from the two exegetical works that are the focus of the study, while secondary data consists of books, scholarly articles, and other supporting sources. The analysis was conducted by comparing their interpretations of 10 relevant verses regarding the status of women. The results of this study indicate that both Zainab al-Ghazali and Wahbah az-Zuhaili share aligned perspectives regarding the recognition of women’s roles in both domestic and public spheres. However, Zainab al-Ghazali places greater emphasis on the aspect of women’s internal struggle, whereas Wahbah az-Zuhaili adopts a more normative and textual approach. This study also concludes that the contributions of both thinkers remain relevant for addressing various women’s issues in the modern era, particularly regarding equality, social roles, inheritance rights, leadership, and the social stigma attached to women.

Abstract

This study critically examined Abdul Mustaqim’s concept of tafsir maqāṣidī and its implications for contemporary online Qur’anic interpretation. Abdul Mustaqim’s maqāṣidī interpretation offers important contributions to contemporary tafsir studies by emphasizing moderation (wasathiyah), contextual understanding, public benefit (maṣlaḥah), and humanitarian values as the main orientation of interpreting the Qur’an. This approach successfully bridges the tension between rigid textualism and liberal relativism, making Qur’anic interpretation more socially relevant and responsive to modern issues such as tolerance, justice, and religious harmony. This research used a qualitative library research method with descriptive-analytical and critical-methodological approaches. The findings showed that although maqāṣidī interpretation strengthens socially relevant Islamic discourse, its methodological simplification risks reducing the complexity of Qur’anic interpretation and increasing ideological subjectivity in digital tafsir practices.

Abstract

Urban Muslim communities increasingly require flexible religious learning spaces that can combine Qur’anic literacy, social care, and contextual guidance. This study examines Majelis Taklim Kalam Yogyakarta as a nonformal Qur’anic learning institution by focusing on how institutional governance, pedagogical practice, and congregational interaction shape religious meaning among adult and elderly congregants. Using a qualitative single embedded case study, data were collected through participant observation in regular study sessions, in-depth interviews with instructors, administrators, and congregants, and analysis of institutional documents, learning materials, attendance records, and monitoring forms. The findings show that organizational restructuring under the Obor Pencerah Kalbu Foundation strengthens administrative clarity, learning continuity, and congregational access, but also creates risks of bureaucratization and uneven implementation across learning sites. Pedagogically, the integration of mushafi, nuzuli, and maudhu’i approaches enables gradual, contextual, and reflective engagement with the Qur’an. Socially, dialogical interaction produces spiritual solidarity, emotional support, and ethical reorientation, especially among elderly participants. This study contributes an integrated model of urban Qur’anic learning that links institutional structure, contextual pedagogy, and social interaction, with implications for andragogical training, intergenerational participation, and policy support for nonformal Islamic education.

Abstract

This study aims to provide a theological reinterpretation of Quranic verse (QS.) Al-Baqarah: 168, shifting its focus from a mere jurisprudential (fiqh) guide for personal consumption toward a foundational framework for political ethics and public policy (siyasah syar'iyyah). The primary objective is to redefine the term thayyiban within the context of the national nutritional emergency (stunting) and the strategic efforts to enhance the nation's cognitive intelligence in pursuit of the "Golden Indonesia 2045" vision. Utilizing a descriptive-analytical qualitative method with an interdisciplinary approach—integrating textual studies (Tafsir Al-Azhar), public nutrition science, and economic sociology—this research analyzes the Nutritious Free Meal (Makan Bergizi Gratis / MBG) Program as a theological mandate for the preservation of life (hifz al-nafs) and the preservation of intellect (hifz al-‘aql). The findings indicate that the thayyiban criteria in the Quran scientifically correlate with the fulfillment of essential animal protein intake, which is critical for brain synapse development. Sociologically, the MBG program serves as an instrument of Islamic social justice aimed at breaking the cycle of structural poverty. Buya Hamka’s interpretation further legitimizes the premise that state authorities are obligated to guarantee the quality of the populace's nutrition. Ultimately, national nutritional failure is not merely a health crisis but a form of neglect toward human dignity within the framework of transformative social theology.

Abstract

This study aims to produce a critical edition of of Tafsir 28, a Qur’anic commentary manuscript written by Shaykh Abdul Lathif Syakur (1882–1963), to reveal its epistemology and intellectual framework, and to examine its contents in order to identify the ways in which it reflects Nusantara Islamic thought and local cultural elements  in Shaykh Abdul Lathif Syakur’s interpretation. Tafsir 28 covers the Qur’anic chapters from Surah al-Mujādilah to Surah at-Taḥrīm. Shaykh Abdul Lathif Syakur’s interpretation is closely connected to the socio-cultural context of the Nusantara Muslim community. This research is qualitative in nature, combining library research and field research, and employing philological and textual taḥqīq approaches. This research finds that, this tafsir belongs to tafsīr bi al-ma’thūr, employs the ijmālī method. Tafsir 28 constitutes Shaykh Abdul Lathif Syakur’s contribution to the Nusantara Qur’anic exegesis. This work was accepted by the local community, despite remaining unpublished , because the interpretations contained in it were part of the teachings that Shaykh Abdul Lathif Syakur had delivered in his preaching, based on the analysis of the Tafsir 28 text. Elements of Nusantara Islam expressed through a distinct Minangkabau cultural framework are evident throughout the commentary. This tafsir represents his contribution to the global Muslim community.

Abstract

Research conducted by tafsir students on social problems requires strong social analysis skills in order to trace the roots of injustice and ensure that the resulting Qur’anic exegesis is appropriately directed. This study aimed to identify curriculum-based strategies for strengthening the social analysis skills of tafsir students. It employed a qualitative approach based on library research. Relevant literature was analyzed using the theory of the integration of general and religious sciences in order to demonstrate the importance of integrating tafsir studies with the social sciences and to formulate strategies for strengthening students’ social analysis through the curriculum. The study identified four curriculum-based strategies for strengthening social analysis: an embedded approach, namely inserting social analysis into existing courses; a parallel approach, namely offering a specific course on social analysis; an extracurricular approach, namely organizing social analysis training; and a transdisciplinary approach, namely enabling students to take relevant courses in other faculties or universities. The findings affirm the urgency of integrating tafsir studies with the social sciences and offer four alternative strategies that may be useful for heads of Qur’anic and Tafsir Studies programs in strengthening students’ social analysis skills.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concept of human creation in Sūrat al-Dhāriyāt (Qurʾān 51:56) and  examine its implications for the philosophical foundation of Islamic education. The research employs a thematic Qurʾānic interpretation approach by analyzing classical and contemporary exegetical works, including - those of al-Ṭabarī and Ibn Kathīr, and relating them to contemporary discussions in Islamic educational thought. The findings indicate that the Qurʾānic concept of worship extends beyond ritual practices and encompasses a holistic orientation of human life toward devotion to God . From this perspective, the ultimate purpose of Islamic education is not merely intellectual development but the cultivation of individuals characterized by spiritual consciousness, intellectual competence, and ethical responsibility. This study proposes a teleological framework of Islamic education in which the purpose of education is derived from the existential purpose of human creation as servants of God. The framework highlights the integration of spiritual, intellectual, and moral dimensions within Islamic educational philosophy and offers a Qurʾānic foundation for contemporary discussions on the objectives of Islamic education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concept of ṣadaqah in the Qur’an as an integral component of Qur’anic philanthropy and to examine its role in constructing the framework of Islamic social ethics. It employs a library research method using a thematic exegesis (tafsīr mawḍū‘ī) approach and the perspective of Islamic social ethics. The primary data consists of Qur’anic verses concerning ṣadaqah, which are analyzed through classical and contemporary Qur’anic exegeses and further enriched with academic literature on Islamic philanthropy, social justice, and Islamic social ethics. The findings demonstrate that ṣadaqah in the Qur’an functions not only as an individual spiritual act of worship but also as a moral and social instrument aimed at strengthening social solidarity, protecting vulnerable groups, and promoting the distribution of welfare within society. The Qur’an positions ṣadaqah as a mechanism of ethical redistribution that challenges the concentration of wealth and emphasizes social responsibility as an integral dimension of religious life. The study concludes that Qur’anic philanthropy constitutes a foundational framework of Islamic social ethics that integrally unites spirituality, morality, and social justice, while remaining highly relevant to addressing contemporary problems of inequality and the erosion of social solidarity.

Abstract

This article examines the isyārī interpretation of the story of Prophet Moses and Pharaoh in several Qur’anic passages, namely Q.S. al-Qaṣaṣ [28]: 3–8, Q.S. al-Qaṣaṣ [28]: 15–21, Q.S. al-Shu‘arā’ [26]: 18–29, and Q.S. Yūnus [10]: 90–92 as interpreted in Al-Baḥr al-Madīd fī Tafsīr al-Qur’ān al-Majīd by Ibn ‘Ajībah. Using a qualitative method with a library research approach, this study explores the spiritual dimensions embedded in Ibn ‘Ajībah’s isyārī interpretation. The findings show that Ibn ‘Ajībah interprets these verses not only as historical narratives about the interaction between Moses and Pharaoh but also as symbolic representations of the spiritual struggle within the human soul. Pharaoh symbolizes arrogance and the domination of the ego, while Moses represents divine guidance that leads humans toward spiritual purification. This study highlights the contribution of isyārī interpretation in enriching the spiritual understanding of Qur’anic narratives and providing deeper spiritual reflection for readers.
