Abstract

Traditional arts education, such as Karawitan, plays an important role in building cultural identity and social skills among students amidst the forces of globalization. Karawitan, as traditional Indonesian music, teaches moral values such as togetherness, mutual cooperation, and collaboration, which support the formation of the younger generation's character. However, the integration of Karawitan into the education curriculum faces several challenges, including limited facilities, insufficient teacher competence, and the perception that traditional arts are less relevant to modern education. This study uses a qualitative approach with a literature review method, examining 50 relevant sources, consisting of 30 journal articles, 10 books, and 10 research reports related to arts education and Karawitan. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis techniques to identify the benefits, challenges, and strategies for implementing Karawitan in education. The results indicate that Karawitan education can increase students' appreciation of local culture and provide an authentic learning experience. For Karawitan to be taught optimally, support from the government and related institutions is necessary, including the provision of resources, teacher training, and relevant teaching materials. The novelty of this study lies in its more comprehensive understanding of practical ways to integrate Karawitan into the education curriculum and highlights the educational values inherent in traditional arts. With proper integration, Karawitan can become an integral part of education, strengthening students' cultural identity and preparing them to face challenges in the globalized world. Keywords: arts education, karawitan, cultural identity, social skills, curriculum integration

Abstract

This study aims to examine the symbolism and philosophy in traditional Indonesian dance movements and their role in conveying social and spiritual values. Using a literature review approach, this research collects and analyzes relevant literature published between 2015 and 2024, including indexed international journals, books, and scholarly articles. Thematic analysis and content analysis are used to identify the main themes in the dance movements, such as harmony, unity, and the relationship between humans, nature, and God. The results show that traditional Indonesian dance is more than just a performing art; it serves as an important medium for transmitting profound moral values and life philosophies, such as self-control, cooperation, and inner peace. These findings highlight the need to preserve the symbolism and philosophy of traditional dance amidst globalization and modernization. The implementation of these findings can be carried out by integrating these cultural values into arts and culture education, both in formal and non-formal settings, to ensure that the younger generation not only masters dance techniques but also understands the philosophical meanings contained within them. This study provides deep insights into the importance of maintaining the relevance of traditional dance as part of the nation’s cultural identity. Keywords: Dance Philosophy, Social Values, Cultural Preservation, Symbolism, Traditional Indonesian Dance

Abstract

Serat Menak Kanin tells the story of Wong Agung's struggle in the war between Muslims and Infidels which is divided into fourteen episodes with the ending of Umarmaya's death caused by Dewi Kalajohar. Serat Menak Kanin is a Javanese literary work built on the basis of a mixture of Javanese and Arabic culture. Serat Menak Kanin is a Javanese literary work that originates from an Arabic story and was adapted into a Javanese story. This story comes from the Hikayat Amir Hamzah which originates from Persia and is set out in a Javanese setting and language. Menak Kanin fiber, which is a product of a mixture of two cultures, allows it to be studied from a binary opposition perspective. The problem of this research is how the cultural reconstruction that occurs in Serat Menak Kanin involves two cultural poles, namely Arabic and Javanese. The aim of this research is to describe the form of mixing of two cultures in the realm of hybridity and mimicry. This research uses a literary sociology approach with postcolonial theory. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive method by analyzing the Serat Menak Kanin text as a whole and recording data that includes hybridity and mimicry. The results of this research show that Serat Menak Kanin is dominated by a binary opposition relationship in the form of hybridity by combining two cultural backgrounds in the names of characters in stories such as Raden Kanjun. Meanwhile, binary opposition in the form of mimicry is found in the use of Arab settings and the Perang Gebyah. Keywords: Binary Opposition, Postcolonial, Hybridity, Mimicry, Serat Menak Kanin

Abstract

This research discusses the Indonesian derivation and inflections used in English words with a background based on the large number of social media users who combine English words with Indonesian affixations. The aim is to describe the process of Indonesian derivation and inflection in English words and to describe changes in parts of speech that occur from the original words. The data source used in this research is application application X period January-February 2024 with data collection techniques through free listening techniques, note-taking techniques, and documentation techniques (screen captures). This research method uses a qualitative descriptive method with a morphological approach. The theory used in this research is the theory of derivation and inflection using Baeur's theory and additional theory for explaining the function and meaning of affixation using the theories of Arifin and Junaiyah, Putrayasa, and Kridalaksana. The results of this study found changes in parts of speech in the derivation category of 44%, divided into nine, changes of parts of speech from noun to verb, changes of parts of speech from noun to adjective, a change of parts of speech from noun to adverb, a change of parts of speech from verb to noun, a change of parts of speech from verb to adjective, a change of parts of speech from verb to adverb, a change of parts of speech from adjective to a noun, a change of parts of speech from adjective to the verb, and changes of parts of speech from adjective to adverb. However, in each parts of speech derived from noun, verb, and adjective was not found to be a change to the adverb parts of speech because no Indonesian affixation was found which changed the parts of speech of the English word to the adverb parts of speech. Furthermore, 56% of parts of speech changes in the inflection category are divided into three types, changes of parts of speech from noun to noun, a change of parts of speech from verb to verb, and changes of parts of speech from adjective to adjective. Keywords: language, derivation, inflection, parts of speech, morphology.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the novel "Children of All Nations" by Pramoedya Ananta Toer in the context of the struggle of oppressed women in Dutch colonial society. This analysis uses a feminist approach, focusing on the resistance of marginalized women. This research uses a qualitative descriptive methodology, where reading and note-taking techniques are applied in the data collection process. Reading techniques are used to understand and interpret the content of the text, while note-taking techniques focus on female characters in the novel who experience various types of gender-based oppression and injustice. The results of text analysis show that in the patriarchal culture of the Dutch East Indies colonial era, indigenous women figures such as Nyai Ontosoroh aggressively resisted oppression and fought for the rights of women who were always oppressed and marginalized. This research found that women are often marginalized and disadvantaged in societies dominated by men since the colonial era. In conclusion, it is hoped that the findings of this research will help to better understand the resistance of marginalized women in historical and social contexts. Keywords: Feminism, Resistance, Marginalized

Abstract

This research aims to examine the Piring Dua Belas dance from a semiotic perspective. This research uses qualitative methods with descriptive analysis. This research uses the Semiotics theory by Charles Sanders Peirce. The results of this research showed in this type of movement, ngakhakelap means that if you have a need, you should meet someone directly without going through an intermediary. It is feared that other people who intervene can exaggerate or reduce everything that should be conveyed. The various movements of sebatang masuk and sebatang keluar have the meaning of advice that life must follow its course like the flow of a river. The variety of ngahilok movements means that Lampung people when walking in front of penyimbang should walk normally and do not need to walk down or squat. The various movements of the laga puyu mean that all problems that occur should be resolved immediately by the person concerned. The variety of nokokh movements means that in living life you have to be skilled. The property used means that in everything there must be two, there is winning and there is losing, there is sadness and happiness. The music that accompanies the dance means that the community, traditional leaders and artists of the Piring Dua Belas dance have tried to maintain the existence of this dance by trying to adapt it to current life. The overall meaning implied in the Piring Dua Belas dance is advice given to people in living their lives. Keywords: Piring Dua Belas Dance, Semiotic
