Jurnal Bastra (Bahasa dan Sastra)
JOURNAL BASTRA (Language and Literature) is a publicly accessible journal published by the Indonesian Language and Literature Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Halu Oleo University. This journal is published four times a year, every January, April, July, and October. This journal contains the results of research (field or literature studies), theoretical studies, and critical studies covering several areas of study as follows. Indonesian language education includes studies on linguistic learning, phonology learning, morphology learning, syntax learning, semantic learning, pragmatics learning, discourse learning, sociolinguistic learning, and psycholinguistic learning. Indonesian literature education includes studies on poetry learning, fiction prose learning, and drama and film learning. Indonesian, includes studies on linguistics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics, discourse, sociolinguistics, and psycholinguistics. Indonesian literature includes studies on poetry, prose fiction, drama, and film with a structural approach, stylistics, semiotics, sociology of literature, psychology of literature, psychoanalysis, literary ecology, deconstruction, philology, phenomenology, feminism, literary reception, and literary anthropology.

This study examines the representation of ideological hegemony in the film Alif Lam Mim by Anggy Umbara, which reflects the socio-political dynamics of Indonesia in the future. As a mass communication medium, film not only functions as entertainment but also serves as a means of education and social criticism. This film depicts the dominance of military and religious institutions in restricting individual freedoms through a hegemonic system of power. This research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with Antonio Gramsci’s theory of hegemony as the analytical framework. Gramsci classifies hegemony into three forms: total hegemony, declining hegemony, and minimal hegemony. Total hegemony is seen through state domination that is voluntarily accepted by society without significant resistance. This is reflected in news broadcasts that normalize violence and obscure its structural roots. Declining hegemony emerges when characters in the film begin to question the system and show inner resistance, although not yet openly. Meanwhile, minimal hegemony is marked by explicit resistance to power, rejection of media manipulation, and the emergence of conflict between personal awareness and dominant ideology. Data were collected through observation and documentation of the film’s dialogues, then analyzed using the Gramscian model. The results show that this film is a critique of ideological domination through popular media, illustrating power relations between the dominant class and the subaltern. Alif Lam Mim represents forms of ideological hegemony that are relevant to the contemporary socio-political realities in Indonesia.

This study investigates the internal psychological composition of key characters in the anime One Piece, focusing on the Skypiea arc, by employing Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. Utilizing a qualitative descriptive method, the research centers on five major characters: Monkey D. Luffy, Enel, Nami, Sanji, and Gan Fall. These figures were chosen due to their significant influence on the plot and the evident psychological complexity they display throughout the storyline. The data were collected through non-intrusive observation of episodes 185 to 192, emphasizing character dialogue, behavior, and interactions that represent the Freudian personality structures of Id, Ego, and Superego. The analysis shows that Enel predominantly operates under the influence of the Id, marked by his selfish desires, aggressive tendencies, and disregard for ethical boundaries. On the other hand, Luffy and Usopp are characterized by their use of the Ego, navigating challenging situations with rational judgment and emotional control. Meanwhile, Nami and Gan Fall exemplify the Superego, guided by moral values, compassion, and a strong sense of duty. These portrayals underline the psychological depth embedded in the anime’s narrative. The research highlights the potential of anime as a medium for scholarly exploration, particularly within literary and psychological studies. It affirms that popular visual culture, such as One Piece, can reflect intricate human behavior and mental processes. Therefore, this study contributes to expanding the academic scope of literary psychology and invites further interdisciplinary investigation.

This study aims to identify and analyze the material needs within the Bahasa Indonesia for Foreign Speakers (BIPA) curriculum in Timor Leste, specifically from the perspective of learners whose first language is Tetum. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews and document analysis, then examined thematically to explore linguistic needs, sociocultural dimensions, learning strategies, and instructional challenges. The findings reveal that learners struggle with abstract vocabulary, formal sentence structures, and comprehension of academic texts. They also express a strong need for audio materials, structured listening practice, and learning resources that align with their local context. The discussion highlights that culturally contextualized content such as Timorese folklore and traditional practices along with informal peer interaction and exposure to Indonesian media, significantly enhances learner motivation and confidence. However, several challenges persist, including misalignment between instructional materials and learners’ actual needs, limited speaking and listening practice, and a lack of locally relevant educational resources. Therefore, this study recommends the development of a BIPA curriculum that is adaptive, inclusive, and responsive to the sociocultural realities of Tetum-speaking learners in Timor Leste, in order to foster more meaningful and empowering language learning experiences.

This study aims to analyze the characters in Fajar Sulaiman’s novel Sunyi Paling Riuh by applying a structural approach. The research focuses on identifying the types of character traits and their relationships within the story. The method used is qualitative descriptive with library research as the data collection technique, in which textual data such as words, sentences, and narrative descriptions were analyzed to reveal the moral and psychological aspects of the characters. The findings show that the novel presents seven dominant character traits: responsibility, friendliness, compassion, wisdom, helpfulness, perseverance, and uncommunicativeness. These traits are embodied mainly in the protagonist, Dhuha, who undergoes significant personal transformation after the disintegration of his family. The relationships among characters—family, friendship, and educational relations—illustrate moral values of empathy, resilience, and responsibility. Structurally, the novel follows a progression from inner conflict, moral crisis, self-awareness, to emotional recovery. The study concludes that Sunyi Paling Riuh reflects the realities of modern youth struggling with emotional and familial breakdowns while highlighting universal values of love, persistence, and moral strength.

This research aims to describe the expository writing skills of 10th-grade students at SMA Negeri 3 Kendari. This research falls under field research, conducted directly at SMA Negeri 3 Kendari, as the research object to collect data in accordance with the issues present in this study. The population in this research consists of all 10th-grade students at SMA Negeri 3 Kendari, totaling 240 students across 7 classes. The sample in this study consisted of 127 students with a margin of error of 10%. The sampling technique used was proportionate stratified random sampling, which involved ranking students' achievements from highest to lowest based on their daily test scores. The data collection technique used in this study was administering a test on writing expository texts. The research results show that out of 127 respondents, there were 56 (44.09%) students categorized as capable and 71 (55.90%) students categorized as not yet capable in writing expository texts. Classically, it can be categorized as not capable because it reached 44.09%, which does not exceed the established classical achievement criterion of 85%. Keywords: ability, writing, exposition.

he purpose of this study is to describe the inner conflict in the novel Rumah Untuk Alie by Lenn Liu using the psychological study of Sigmund Freud. This type of research is library research, namely research supported by references in the form of novel texts or other book sources that cover the problems of this research. The data used in this study are written data in the form of novel texts related to the inner conflict in the novel Rumah Untuk Alie by Lenn Liu. The data source in this study is the novel Rumah Untuk Alie by Lenn Liu which is 262 pages long and published by Tekad Media Cakrawala, fourth edition April 2024. The technique used to collect data in this study is the intensive reading technique. The steps taken in analyzing the data are: data identification, data classification, and data interpretation. Based on the results of the study of inner conflict in the novel Rumah Untuk Alie by Leen Liu: in the Psychological Study of Sigmund Freud, it is concluded that the psychoanalytic theory put forward by Sigmund Freud, three aspects of personality, namely id, ego, and superego which are the basis of the study, aims to present aspects of inner conflict contained in the novel. The id aspect as the driving force of the ego aspect is interconnected, the driving force of the id is filtered and fulfilled by the ego aspect, and the ego filters and increases the satisfaction sought by the id aspect, so that both balance each other. Furthermore, the novel Rumah Untuk Alie by Lenn Liu presents the superego as a mediator and controller of the problems faced by Alie.

This research examines the religious values in the novel Saga dari Samudra by Ratih Kumala. A novel is a long prose essay, containing a series of stories about a person's life and the people around him, highlighting the character and nature of each actor. Literary works created by authors must contain certain life values that will be conveyed to readers, various life values that the author wants to convey through his work, one of which is religious values. The formulation of the problem in this research is the religious values contained in the novel Saga dari Samudra by Ratih Kumala. The aim of this research is to describe the religious values in the novel Saga dari Samudra by Ratih Kumala. This research is a qualitative descriptive research. The data source in this research is the novel Saga dari Samudra published by Gramedia Pustaka Utama in 2023, which consists of 193 pages. Data collection techniques in this research were carried out using reading techniques and note-taking techniques. The data analysis technique in analyzing religious values in the novel Saga dari Samudra by Ratih Kumala uses a literary sociology approach. The results of the analysis show that religious values in the novel Saga dari Samudra by Ratih Kumala are religious values in human relationships with God, religious values in human relationships with themselves, and religious values in human relationships with other humans. Religious values in human relationships with God, which consist of worship, faith and gratitude. Religious values in humans' relationship with themselves, which consist of being patient, seeking knowledge, sincerity and introspection. Religious values in human relationships with other humans, which consist of forgiveness, mutual help, compassion, keeping promises, and upholding justice.

The problem of this research is what moral values are contained in the novel Hijrah Terindah by Indahnursf and Jaymes R? The aim of this research is to describe and analyze the moral values in the novel Hijrah Terindah by Indahnursf and Jaymes R. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods, and the data used are texts, words and sentences related to moral values sourced from the novel The Most Hijrah Terindah by Indahnursf and Jaymes R, published by Aksara Plus, Jakarta, 2020 with 206 pages. The data collection technique for this research is note-taking and critical reading techniques which are carried out by reading and recording quotations which relates to the moral values contained in the novel Hijrah Terindah by Indahnursf and Jaymes R. The data analysis technique uses a moral approach. The results of the analysis show that man's relationship with God is in the form of; feelings of sin against God, praying or begging God, recognizing the greatness of God, religious feelings, and obedient worship. Moral values in human relations with themselves are in the form of; self-existence, fear, self-esteem, and patience. Moral values in human relations with humans in the social sphere are in the form of; think positively, help others, help the weak selflessly, and get to know each other. Moral values in human relations with nature are in the form of; utilization of natural resources.

The novel Tanah Para Bandit by Tere Liye serves as the research basis for this study, which focuses on talking about societal issues raised in the book. A novel is a piece of prose fiction that describes the difficult existence of a fictional character or persona. An author's literary works often address societal issues that the author want to make readers aware of. Social difficulties are issues that run counter to societal standards and ideals. What societal issues are raised in Tere Liye's novel Tanah Para Bandit is the wording of the research problem. The purpose of this study is to outline the societal issues raised by Tere Liye's novel Tanah Para Bandit. A qualitative descriptive method was used in this investigation. The research's source material is Tere Liye's novel Tanah Para Bandit, which addresses societal challenges. The data source is Tere Liye's book Tanah Para Bandit, published in 2023 by PT Sabakgrip Nusantara. The methods of analysis and close reading were both used to collect the data for this investigation. The data analysis process employs a literary sociology technique that focuses on the sociology of literary works. The sociological approach to literature focuses on the topic of literary works' contents, objectives, and other components alluded to in the work itself, as well as how these relate to society concerns and the intended message or purpose. Eight different types of social problems were identified as a result of research on the themes of social problems in Tere Liye's novel Tanah Para Bandit. These problems included issues with poverty, violence, family disarray, the younger generation, breaking community norms, population, the environment, and crime.

The purpose of this study is to describe the linking language style contained in the novel Home Sweet Loan by Almira Bastari. This type of research is library research and the method used in this study is a descriptive method that aims to describe the results of the study in detail and in depth. The data used in this study is a novel text, which contains a number of linking language styles in the novel Home Sweet Loan by Almira Bastari. The data collection method is the literature review and study method. The data collection technique is the reading and note-taking technique. The data analysis technique used is the content analysis technique which is used to determine the existence of certain words, themes, or concepts in certain qualitative data (namely text). The research data shows that there is a linking language style. The linking style of language includes (1) metonymy, (2) antanaklasis, (3) symbolic, (4) synecdoche, (5) allusion, (6) euphemism, (7) dysphemism, (8) eponym, (9) antonomasia, (10) epithet, (11) erotesis, (12) parallelism, (13) ellipsis, (14) gradation, (15) asyndeton, (16) polysyndeton, (17) rhetorical, (18) interruption, (19) enumeration, (20) resentia, (21) ananculoton, (22) meiosis, (23) symmetrical. The linking style of language in the novel Home Sweet Loan can support the facts of the story and make it more interesting, followable, and memorable.
