Abstract

This study examines the transformation of traditional Tolaki values in a local wisdom-based education system at the elementary school/Islamic elementary school level amidst the challenges of globalization and educational standardization in Indonesia. Through a critical ethnographic approach in five elementary schools with 15 key informants, this study identified five Tolaki values relevant to contemporary elementary education: Medulu Mepoko'aso (unity), Morini Mbu'umbundi (hard work), Samaturu (mutual cooperation), Kalosara (conflict resolution), and Kohanu (integrity). Three implementation patterns were found: symbolic (45%), content (32%), and integrated (23%). An effective transformation model that includes curriculum revitalization, capacity building of elementary school/Islamic elementary school teachers, community involvement, and value-based evaluation shows a significant improvement in the character formation of elementary school/Islamic elementary school students, especially in the aspects of cooperation, responsibility, integrity, and respect for cultural identity. This study concludes that the transformation of traditional values at the elementary school/Islamic elementary school level is not only an effort to preserve culture, but also a strategy to create character education that is contextual and relevant to global and local needs.

Abstract

Civic education at the elementary school level often encounters challenges in internalizing citizenship values in a contextual and meaningful manner. This study aims to explore strategies for teaching civic education based on local values and their impact on students’ understanding and civic attitudes. Employing a qualitative approach with a case study design, data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation at a primary school in Kendari City. Data analysis was conducted using NVivo software to identify key emerging themes from field findings. The results reveal that the integration of local values—such as cooperation (gotong royong), deliberation (musyawarah), and social concern—into instructional strategies enhances student participation, fosters civic character, and strengthens the connection between learning materials and students’ sociocultural realities. These findings offer significant implications for the development of contextual curricula and character education rooted in local wisdom. This strategy is considered effective in cultivating inclusive, participatory, and culturally grounded civic understanding from an early age.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between local wisdom and Islamic education values in shaping the character profile of Rahmatan lil ‘Alamin students in Southeast Sulawesi. The main issue addressed is how the integration of local wisdom can enrich Islamic education and foster the development of students with noble character. The study aims to explore the impact of local wisdom on shaping student profiles within the context of Islamic education and analyze its effects on both theory and practice. A qualitative approach was employed, utilizing in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis in several schools in Southeast Sulawesi. The findings reveal that local wisdom plays a significant role in strengthening Islamic education values such as compassion, justice, and social responsibility, which are reflected in students' behavior. The integration of local wisdom into Islamic education contributes to the development of students who are not only academically competent but also socially and morally mature. Its impact on Islamic education theory enriches the contextual approach to character education. The practical implication is the need to adapt the curriculum to integrate local wisdom to shape more holistic students. This study offers recommendations for developing education policies that are based on local wisdom and religious values.

Abstract

Citizenship issues in elementary school students are increasingly complex along with social and digital developments. This study aims to examine teachers' strategies in fostering citizenship values through an inquiry learning approach in the context of Citizenship Education in elementary schools. The research used a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, and data analysis assisted by NVivo 14 software. The research setting was several primary schools in Kendari City, with the main informants consisting of class teachers, principals, and students. The results showed that teachers implemented five main strategies, namely the use of contextual triggering questions, facilitation of exploration and critical discussion, collaborative reflection on values, participatory citizenship projects, and exemplary values by teachers. These strategies contributed significantly to increasing students' awareness, democratic attitudes and active participation in school life. The findings suggest that the inquiry approach is effective in shaping civic literacy from an early age. This research provides theoretical contributions to value-based pedagogical approaches, as well as practical implications for teachers and policy makers in designing more contextual, reflective and transformative civic learning in primary schools.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the impact of inquiry-based learning strategies on improving the citizenship literacy of elementary school students through the teaching of the Youth Pledge history. The research problem addressed in this study is how inquiry-based learning methods can influence students' understanding of national unity, patriotism, and national identity values. This research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design involving students, teachers, and school principals from several elementary schools in Kendari City. Data collection techniques included interviews, observations, and documentation, which were then analyzed using N-Vivo software to identify emerging themes from the data. The findings show that the implementation of inquiry-based learning significantly enhanced students' understanding of national values and increased their engagement in the learning process. Students also demonstrated improved citizenship literacy, including critical thinking and social responsibility. The implications of this study suggest that inquiry-based learning methods can be an effective approach to strengthening citizenship character and national understanding in elementary schools. This study makes a significant contribution to the development of more interactive and reflective history teaching methods in Indonesia.

Abstract

The development of civic competence at the primary school level is often stuck in rote learning that does not encourage the internalization of the values of rights, obligations, and responsibilities as democratic citizens. This study aims to explore the application of the inquiry approach as an innovative strategy in civic education to improve students' understanding of these basic civic concepts. Using a qualitative research design with a case study approach, data were collected through interviews, observations and document analysis involving teachers and students in one primary school in Kendari City, Indonesia. Data analysis was conducted to identify the main themes that emerged. The results showed that the inquiry approach encouraged students to construct knowledge through reflection, dialog, and contextual exploration. Students were able to connect personal experiences with the concepts of rights, obligations, and responsibilities in a meaningful way, and showed improved critical thinking skills and active participation. This research contributes to strengthening the theory of civic education and provides practical implications in designing learning that is oriented towards democratic values from an early age.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze Indonesia's constitutional transformation after the amendments to the 1945 Constitution, with a focus on significant changes in the constitutional system and their impact on democracy. Although the amendment aims to strengthen the system of checks and balances and encourage more democratic governance, its practice shows a mismatch between constitutional theory and implementation on the ground. This research uses a qualitative approach with document analysis and interviews, as well as analyzing data using software to identify patterns in legal documents and the views of constitutional experts. The research results show that although the amendment strengthens the position of the legislature, the concentration of power in the executive and inequality in the distribution of power between the center and the regions remain the main challenges. The implication of these findings is the need for further efforts to increase the effectiveness of the system of checks and balances and decentralization of power. This research's recommendations include strengthening the role of the legislature and improving the decentralization system to create a fairer and more responsive government.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of inquiry-based civic education media in enhancing civic literacy among elementary school students. The problem addressed is the limited engagement of students in conventional Pancasila and Civic Education (PPKn) learning, which tends to emphasize rote knowledge over critical, participatory, and reflective dimensions of citizenship. The objective of this research is to explore how inquiry-oriented learning media can foster students’ understanding, critical reasoning, and social responsibility in a contextual and meaningful way. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, classroom observations, and documentation in an elementary school in Kendari, Indonesia. NVivo 14 software was utilized for thematic analysis to ensure systematic and rigorous interpretation. The results reveal that the use of inquiry-based media significantly enhances students’ comprehension of civic values, promotes critical thinking, strengthens civic identity, and increases participation in school life. These findings contribute to the development of multidimensional civic literacy models and underscore the pedagogical value of inquiry strategies in primary education.
